Growing trend for halal meat

1000 replies

SouthernFashionista · 29/09/2025 14:54

I’m seeing this and it concerns me. I have noticed that Five Guys is now advertising that all its meat is halal and the restaurant in my workplace serves only halal meat. Who is pushing for this and why do the rest of us have no say? For what it’s worth, I am a Black woman, a practising Catholic with many Muslim friends and acquaintances. I don’t believe they are out there demanding halal meat everywhere they go.

Well no because I don’t believe in that. We eat meat. And thankfully most of the time we can afford ethically killed meat. But on occasion where we can’t I do buy halal as it’s cheaper. I am just saying it annoys me. But to my children it’s just the same.

Whoops sorry. I thought you were vegetarian. I'm surprised why people are getting in such a fuss about halal. Do you think your animal wanted to die? Did they all live a happy and fun life till they "got to the farm?" Lol

FoodieBoobie · 30/09/2025 15:26

Killing an animal against its will. How very ethical.

nomas · 30/09/2025 15:31

QuestioningQuorn · 29/09/2025 15:30

Well of course. I eat meat. Doesn’t mean I wish animals to suffer any more than necessary.

And it is annoying because there have been times recently where we have had to buy halal meat. It’s the cheaper option in supermarkets and some months have been tough. Personally I think it should be banned.

Which supermarket has halal meat cheaper than non-halal meat? I have never seen that.

A non-halal whole medium chicken is £4.18 at Asda.

A halal whole medium chicken is £5.82 at Asda.

Halal costs more because they have to factor in cost of certification as halal, smaller market size leading to less economy of scale and specialised labour.

You don't believe it's possible to eat a healthy nutritious diet without meat? I mean, I eat meat, but I know better than that...

Vegans exist as well.

I don't believe any religion is inherently sexist. As someone who has spent time learning about Islam I've come to realise how many rights islam actually gave to women. One of Muhammad's wife was a businesswoman as well

I realise how in Islam the thing about having multiple wives was to prevent women from suffering in poverty.

The ruling of "4 wives max" came after Muhammad had been in his marriages. I learnt how in islam a man is obligated by his creator to provide for all of his wife's needs and expenses. It's up to him to pay the bills and house and look after his wife.

Muhammad's first wife was older and an independently wealthy businesswoman. This was before the creation of Islam. So prior to Islam, women could already be independent, choose who they married and even marry a younger & less wealthy man.

In contrast his last wife, by which time, Muhammad and Islam had many followers, was just 6 at the time of the marriage. And 9 when the marriage was consummated. This is according to highly respected texts of the hadith. And are uncontroversial 'facts' in Muslim countries.

This was to save the 6 year old girl from poverty?

There's a debate as to the age. Some say the 6 to 9 was after puberty. Some highlight her participation in battles as a sign as her age was actually older and she was actually 19.

I believe he married her as the marriage was according to Islam divinely guided.

They wouldn’t live at all if it wasn’t for the meat trade.

@nomas

In Sainsbury’s prepped thighs are cheaper halal but you can get unprepped normal chicken for cheaper (ie with skin). Sometimes the ‘with skin’ are sold out. So instead of paying full whack for non halal prepped; I sometimes get halal.

It doesn’t often happen.

Sure some people can. Could I on my budget and level of understanding of food. No not confident I could. And why would I. I eat meat!

Girls are currently permitted to be married at nine years old, under the Jaafari school of Islamic law followed by many Shia religious authorities in Iraq. This is based on their firm belief that Muhammad consummated the marriage to his last wife when she was nine years old.

Would you be willing to publicly say that a man marrying a 6-year old child and having sex with her when she was 9 years old is wrong, and that it should be a crime that is severely punished?

Is being veggie more expensive?

Potentially it could be. As I said I don’t have the knowledge to do balanced healthy veggie so no idea.

I don't think it is. And you can easily Google and learn how to make a healthy vegetarian diet.

Agree. All very well having these rights on paper when none of the Islamic countries seem to actually implement them.

A kilo of non-halal chicken thighs at Sainsbury’s are £2.99.

A kilo of Tariq halal chicken thighs at Sainsbury’s are £4.75.

The Tariq halal chicken thighs are skinless because that’s how a lot of Muslims prefer them.

So this is a situation where creating choice for Muslims has benefitted you.

Not sure why you’re framing this is a bad situation for you?

If the 1kg unprepped skin on chicken thigh is unavailable then the next non halal 1kg product is this one at £6.95

We are really getting into the detail of chicken thighs here 😂

I didn’t say it was bad on every aspect. It’s good for my children to eat and the budget hence buying it. I am just saying I do not like it morally. And it does pain me momentarily to purchase but I do and get on with my day.

It might be confusing to you but it’s really not to me. I don’t agree with unstunned meat but again to repeat I am not going to not feed my children a meat supper due to my beliefs. Perhaps this is like veggies or vegans who feed their children meat?

Anyway I am sure people are bored of discussing my shopping habits now so we will leave it at that. I am not sure how many different ways I can say this.

‘Most Muslim-majority countries are moving toward:

  • Minimum legal marriage ages of 18
  • Stronger enforcement
  • Criminalizing child marriage

While Iran and Yemen are the most notable for allowing marriage at or around 9 years old under certain interpretations or legal exceptions, this is not common or widely accepted in the modern Muslim world. Most Islamic countries have set higher minimum ages or are reforming toward better child protection’

‘The most common people involved in arranging or participating in child marriages (such as marriages involving girls as young as 9) are typically not from the general population, but rather from specific social, cultural, and economic backgrounds where child marriage is still practiced. These people are often driven by poverty, tradition, or conservative religious interpretations—not mainstream legal systems’

‘Legally allowing marriage at age 9 is extremely rare today, even in Islamic countries’

But there is no option for £2.99 chicken thighs for Muslims at Sainsbury’s!

If the £4.75 halal chicken thighs are finished, that’s it, kaput!

Whereas you have the choice between £2.99 thighs, £4.75 thighs and £6.95 thighs.

You have the luxury of choice but think you have more ‘pain’ than Muslims 🤣

My understanding is that there is a bit more to halal than just the method of slaughter. For meat to be truly halal those raising the meat need to have more regard to the welfare of the beast during its life than those rearing non-halal meat. As a meat eater I find myself much more concerned with what happens throughout the creature's life - does it get fresh air, room to move etc - than I am about the very last few seconds of its life.

Does that happen then? Are there halal farms with much higher welfare standards? What about in Muslim countries? Are farmed animals treated much better than farmed animals in the UK?

millymollymoomoo · 30/09/2025 17:42

The issue is pandering to Muslims and the creep of islamificatuon in the U.K. - something we see everywhere!

also, that non Muslims are not given a choice - imagine if we just said, no sorry it’s non halal only and you’ll just have to put up with it ) which btw we should do this as head of RSPCA states it should be banbed) there would be uproar !

total pandering and hypocrisy

I was under the impression there was some debate about her role. Even allowing for this, whether it be Christianity or Islam, religion has been weaponised to restrict women's freedom, bodily autonomy and even education under the guise of cherishing and protecting them. Women are as capable of blind faith as men, even it is goes against what is right.

So, yes, it matters.

Edited

Weaponised by whom? All Muslim women see in the news and from people like you is trying to rip their clothes off and dress them up in nakedness. Again delusion and ignorance just breeds utter hatred. Western feminism does not give a crap about about Muslim women, brown, black, Asian etc. Basically anyone that isn't from white Europe or America. Very clear to see from all the things happening to women in the world right now. Genocide in Gaza, massacres in Africa, women being forced to have their rapists babies in America, so chill your beans as if you care about women.

Muslim women are amongst the most educated in the world, especially in STEM subjects, they keep our own money whilst husbands and fathers have to financially support them even if women outstrip the male's earnings. A Muslim WOMAN set up the first university in the world and the west copied. Women had the right to vote, fight, be businesswomen or whatever they wanted centuries ago whilst the UK festered in keeping women down by not allowing them to vote and called them hysterical when they so much as disagreed with a man. So much Muslim discoveries were stolen by the west and the names of the scholars Latinised which led to people like you thinking Europe is the centre of everything.

There's a few crazies who sadly get all the negative attention and dodo's like you lap it up and lose a few brain cells in the process.

All I see is you weaponising your euro-centric views and imposing it on the rest of us. Typical colonial and dictator mindset. At least start recognising you've been gaslit you joke of a person.

Exactly but as ever let's all be right on and in line with avoiding government wrong think incessant braying about quality of life like we live in America or some third world country that doesn't have standards and legal requirements

Honestly im not even mad im just disappointed

Is this meant to be a cogent and coherent sentence???
