Violet Affleck and mask mandates

aold · 24/09/2025 09:44

AIBU think that this shouldn’t be encouraged? Violet Affleck advocating for mask mandates. Daughter of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. Speaking about the importance of masks. Says we should still be wearing them to curb the spread of Covid 19.
Shouldn’t a young privileged woman be enjoying her youth? Is there a reason for fit healthy people like her to still walk around in masks?

"Enjoying her youth"
What on earth does that mean? She's at university and this is what she is studying.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 24/09/2025 09:48

Are you suggesting that a young woman should not be allowed to choose what she wears?

Finteq · 24/09/2025 09:49

I think she has mental health issues.

Of course she can wear a mask but she shouldn't be trying to force everyone else to wear one.

MyAcornWood · 24/09/2025 09:49

She’s not hurting anyone, and I can’t see how this stops her enjoying her life, but the preachy nature of it all is a bit annoying. On an unrelated note, doesn’t she look like her mum?!

Overtheatlantic · 24/09/2025 09:50

I guess she’s using her immense privilege for good, although lecturing the UN seems like a right she hasn’t yet earned.

DinaofCloud9 · 24/09/2025 09:50

She can do what she likes but she won't convince most people to go along with it.

I’m suggesting that mandatory wearing of masks is totally unnecessary for most people and (as we know from pandemic days) masks aren’t really filtering out all pollutants, airborne viruses and nasties

More likely the fact she goes to Yale.

I’ve heard her speak before and immediately thought this.

She can wear what she wants but needs to stop preaching to the rest of us about her beliefs. It’s tiresome.

Yes. And? She didn’t pick her parents, she still gets to have opinions.

And how is this stopping her from ‘enjoying her youth’? Is enjoyment of one’s youth only to be derived from things you agree with?

Butchyrestingface · 24/09/2025 09:54

I don't think many 19 year olds (not even articulate Yale undergraduates) would be afforded the opportunity to give speeches to the UN. On any subject, far less mandating the continuation of mask wearing years after pandemic restrictions have lifted.

agreed. But as the parent of a Uni aged child
like Violet, I’d be concerned with this sort of extreme behaviour.

I thought she had physical health issues actually, and that was why she was campaigning, because she's someone who would benefit from a reduction in spread of airborne illnesses. I'm sure she spoke about it very eloquently beforehand.

I haven't listened to her latest speech, is she advocating for everyone to continue wearing them forever, or is she advocating for masks not to be banned?

I’m sure she’s having a rare old time living it up on campus, sure.

Ah, I knew it wouldn't take long before the bullshit really started.

No, masks don't filter out ALL pollutants, airborne viruses etc. No-one claims they do but it's a strangely common strawman put up by disingenuous people such as yourself. Almost like you're following a script.

What a mask does is reduce the risks. Not eliminate, but reduce. In the same way that a seatbelt doesn't eliminate the risk of injury in a car accident but it does reduce it.

Never heard of scholarships? Poor people get to go to Yale too.
Yes her parents are rich but you've got to be very smart to go there.

Butchyrestingface · 24/09/2025 09:57

Her use of her left hand during the speechifying annoys me. Grin

Also needs to slow the fuck down (granted she's hardly the only one that applies to).

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 24/09/2025 09:58

The idea of enforced masks five years after the pandemic is unrealistic nonsense. She is too young and naive to be speaking out like this - it would be more appropriate as a university essay.

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 09:59

What a strange thread.
In some countries (ie Japan) people wearing masks when they have a cold or whatever has been the norm way before COVID ever came along.

I can’t take you seriously at all if you’re actually comparing mask wearing to seat belt wearing ffs

Soooo…you initially objected to her not ‘enjoying her youth’. Is she or isn’t she?

You’re not being massively coherent with regards to what you’re complaining about.
