Violet Affleck and mask mandates

aold · 24/09/2025 09:44

AIBU think that this shouldn’t be encouraged? Violet Affleck advocating for mask mandates. Daughter of Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck. Speaking about the importance of masks. Says we should still be wearing them to curb the spread of Covid 19.
Shouldn’t a young privileged woman be enjoying her youth? Is there a reason for fit healthy people like her to still walk around in masks?

Are you suggesting that a young woman should not be allowed to choose what she wears?

She's suggesting a young woman should not be so anxious about Covid she is trying to get the mandatory wearing of masks reinstated. This isn't a thread about fashion choices.

She can wear what she wants but needs to stop preaching to the rest of us about her beliefs. It’s tiresome.

Exactly this

She's absolutely entitled to her opinion but not to be telling the rest of us what to do, and IMO is simply making herself look like another silly teenager who thinks they have the answer to everything

BoudiccaRuled · 24/09/2025 12:18

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 09:57

Never heard of scholarships? Poor people get to go to Yale too.
Yes her parents are rich but you've got to be very smart to go there.

Exactly. Ben Affleck can't be as dim as he looks considering the talent displayed by his projects with Matt Damon, so it's not a leap to suggest his children will be intelligent.
They will be paying eye watering fees but that funds less wealthy, intelligent students.
The whole addressing the UN thing suggests she is being overly indulged, however.

I just had a look what she actually said. She talked about the long term impact of covid infections and advocated for cleaned filtered air to reduce the number of infection. She wasn't talking about mask mandates, but in a previous speech a year or 2 ago she said that mask mandates in medical facilities would be a good idea (Something which a fair number of hospitals in the world still do to reduce hospital acquired infections.) Everything she said is backed by scientific evidence.

"Here's what we know about SARS CoV2. It is airborne, floating and lingering in the air, one infection can result in disabling damage to almost every cell in the body from the brain and heart to the nerves and blood vessels."

Violet also said that "every subsequent infection increases the risk of long movement and places people who already have it in greater danger."

"As Dr. Akiko Iwasaki says, at this point, the whole population is the control group, and after only five years, long COVID has surpassed asthma as the most common chronic illness in children in five years and under," she explained. "

"During her speech, Violet said: "My hope for this event and my belief in this community pressed on the belief that we can and we must do that again. We can recognize filtered air as a human right, as intuitively as we do filtered water. We can create clean air infrastructure that is so ubiquitous and so obviously necessary, so that tomorrow's children don't even know why we need it.'

Yep - this SUCH a typical mumsnet thread
OP posts something….no one actually bothers to check the basis of what they’ve said…..cue 5 pages of absolute drivel as people argue about whether a Uni student should be allowed to have an opinion. That she doesn’t even have. You couldn’t make it up.
its quite embarrassing to read.

oh and those of us who’ve been working in infectious diseases for most of their life totally applaud her view with regards to air filtration in public spaces. It’s absolutely standard in other countries and makes a significant difference to CAIs and HAIs.

SoggyArse · 24/09/2025 11:16

It's the sanctimonious telling us off for not doing as she does that pisses me off.

COVID is no worse than a cold. Get over it FFS . Her generation are a bunch of wet lettuces

Please don't generalise in that way about Covid. For some people it can still have very serious consequences, far worse than a cold. Nothing to do with being a 'wet lettuce' as you so charmingly put it.

Vaxtable · 24/09/2025 12:29

We live in a free country, she can do what she wants and think whatever she wants to think as long as she breaks no laws

not something to get het up about

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/09/2025 12:32

I agree, @dreamiesformolly - I caught Covid after getting the first dose of the first vaccine, and I ended up in hospital, on oxygen, having dropped my oxygen saturations to under 90%. I was in for several days, luckily not in ICU, but ended up with long covid, which has left me registered disabled, only able to leave the house very rarely, with dh basically having to do almost everything round the house. I can make myself a sandwich, or heat a ping meal, but haven’t cooked a proper meal in years. I used to go to the library, or do the supermarket shop in person, or wander round a shopping centre, art gallery, museum or stately home, but I can’t do that any more.

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 24/09/2025 12:34

I think ultimately the UN will follow the science and not mandate something because of what Violet Affleck says. It all seems a bit pointless to be honest, I'm not sure what "authority" she has to speak to them...do they often allow unqualified members of the public an audience? Maybe they do, I don't know.

Turningworld · 24/09/2025 12:58

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/09/2025 10:55

Explain how it’s going to be done to Violet’s satisfaction? I’m guessing something to do with masks but I could be wrong.

Edited

Hepa air filters, very simple and effective.

It’s pushback against cleaner air. I don’t get it. Let’s reduce hospital-acquired infections. No!
Let’s reduce the number of people becoming disabled from infections. No!
Let’s reduce the costs of infections. No!
Let’s help with allergens. No!
Let’s improve attendance. No!
Let’s improve test scores. No!

CharlieKirkRIP · 24/09/2025 13:02

She is clearly mentally unwell.

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 13:04

HonoraBridge · 24/09/2025 11:35

You think everyone who goes to Yale gets the opportunity to speak at the UN? Seriously? It is clearly nepotism.

I wouldn't have a clue.
All I know is it's a world respected university.

ImATerribleMultitasker · 24/09/2025 13:05

Is this why there are loads of young people going about wearing masks now?

Let them crack on. We have enough issues to deal with without more snowflake angst.

Needmorelego · 24/09/2025 13:06

Pedallleur · 24/09/2025 11:43

would have thought there were bigger issues in the US right now for her to defend.is this her thing or has she a job eg lawyer

She's 19 and at university.

Ah but we can't take away their freedoms by putting air filters in public buildings and forcing them to breathe cleaner air. I wonder if these people are aware that their freedoms are also being eroded by the dreadful people who remove pathogens from their water?

Yes. And? She didn’t pick her parents, she still gets to have opinions.

And how is this stopping her from ‘enjoying her youth’? Is enjoyment of one’s youth only to be derived from things you agree with?

Nobody cares what this spoilt, pampered nepo baby has to say.

She should seek help for her health anxiety and stop bothering people.

Perhaps OP would prefer her to spend her youth having one night stands and drunkenly pissing in alleys, rather than being an academic at Yale.

I mean, clearly some people do care. Or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

And she’s hardly ‘bothering people’. She doesn’t know we exist. We are actively choosing to engage about this. We could just as easily choose not to.

What help should people seek if they are unable to face facts?

FuzzyWolf · 24/09/2025 13:23

"As Dr. Akiko Iwasaki says, at this point, the whole population is the control group, and after only five years, long COVID has surpassed asthma as the most common chronic illness in children in five years and under," she explained."

This is the same age group most impacted with speech and language delays as a direct result of people wearing masks.

viques · 24/09/2025 13:23

Poor Violet needs to work on their skills of persuasion, they can’t even get their own parents to wear masks.

I am using they and their pronouns because I sort of suspect that that is what Violet would prefer. Bless

nomas · 24/09/2025 13:23

I keep reading Violet Affleck as Violent Affect or Violent Affliction.

Strange name combo.

Violet also doesn’t wear a face mask all the time.
