I feel so demoralised

Ive just read that Nigel Frarage will send back all immigrants and abolish the settled status. We wont be able to stay in the UK unless we earn a high salary and instead be on some sort of renewable status visa.
I was born in the Netherlands. Came to the UK aged 1 year. Mum is Irish. Went to school here, then have been working in the nhs for 30 years. I have settled status but I also have long term cancer so I am a drain on the nhs.
Ill be 59 when he gets into power. I dont know how Ill manage. Im carer for my mum who has dementia and isnt going anywhere soon.

Hopefully it's all just nonsense said so people will vote for his company or party or whatever it is these days.
I know lots of people in the same situation as you and they wouldn't have the first idea what to do to settle anywhere other than the UK.

Is there any way you could work towards citizenship though if it would put your mind at rest?

BananaAndApple · 22/09/2025 09:13

Firstly, I am very sorry to hear about your cancer - and I wish you a full and speedy recovery.

Genuine question to all those who say "send the immigrants back" - what do we do if the country they left doesn't want them back? You can't just land a plane in Amsterdam/Kabul/Khartoum without the countries permission - in some countries they would shoot you down, nevermind let you land.

StewkeyBlue · 22/09/2025 09:24

Farage’s stupid statements fall apart as soon as anyone looks at the legal, financial and practical implications.

He had already had to row back on his latest stop the boats’ ‘pledge’

Meanwhile fruit crops rot and cafes close since Farage’s Brexit drove tbe seasonal labour away.

What Farage ‘will’ do depends on whether he gets voted in.

Middleageddreameresawsss · 22/09/2025 09:52

Thanks. I think he will get voted in. Im not sure ill be alive when it happens anyway. There is no recovery from the type of cancer I have but its expensive to treat and ecen tho Ive paid full NI, tax etc Im an immigrant that he and his followers want out.

He won't get into power...stop worrying about something that won't happen. How many seats does reform have anyway? Less than ten? You need hundreds to end up in power. It won't happen. The media give him air time because he's a divisive character...that's all. Just concentrate on yourself and your own life

Whatareyoutalkingaboutnow · 22/09/2025 09:57

This man will say anything to appeal to people's concerns over immigration.
Also, the population of this country has for centuries been made up of immigrants from all over. Please don't take what he says as fact. It's nonsense.

OfKitten · 22/09/2025 09:59

Agree with PP he will say anything, but any reason you don't want to become a UK citizen?

I mean, people said this about Trump. I wouldn't be so sure. There's a swing to the right everywhere, it seems. I don't blame people for being worried at all.

That said, try to focus elsewhere, OP. And don't be upset about your treatment being expensive. You have every right to be treated and maintain as much of a quality of life as possible. I'm sorry you're so ill.

FuzzyWolf · 22/09/2025 10:02

I hope that your fears don’t materialise and wish you well with your health.

As someone who is British, I also fear Farage coming into power and feel incredibly let down by the Labour Party so can see it being a genuine prospect. I feel disillusioned with all the political parties right now.

Comedycook · 22/09/2025 10:03

Reform will certainly hoover up a lot of votes but we don't have pr...it's first past the post.

Comedycook · 22/09/2025 10:04

And they'll get enough votes to disrupt the results but I really don't think they'll actually be in power.

KateMiskin · 22/09/2025 10:06

Link to this Farage statement?

SriouslyWhutNow · 22/09/2025 10:07

Sorry for your health. If your mum is Irish you are automatically Irish by descent and under special rules due to the GFA. You must know this?! You are not at any risk from anything unless someone rips up the GFA. Likely it’s all just hot air from NF or his opponents anyway.

Shepherdseven56 · 22/09/2025 10:08

I’m very sorry about your cancer op and your mum’s dementia. That is a lot to deal with. 💐💐💐

Sorry if this is a silly question and I am missing something, but given the length of time you have lived and worked in the uk, and paid tax, surely you qualify for citizenship now? Why not apply for a British passport and remove all doubts about your status?

Edited to say: I think your worries about Farage are valid btw, There is a lot going on atm that is unsettling.

Sorry, just saw it. He's a fucking idiot who will tank the economy and then run off to Dubai or Trumpland or wherever.

Why not apply for citizenship though?

Meadowfinch · 22/09/2025 10:11

Firstly there is no guarantee that Reform will get in.

Even if they do, they've got to get any changes to the law through parliament which will take time. Is Reform likely to last more than one term? Very doubtful.

If they get the laws through, you've been here 30 years and there are at least 5 million people they will need to process before they get to you. There will be ramifications they haven't even considered such as loss of skills, impact on the housing market etc if their daft ideas go ahead.

And you have an Irish mother. I'm sure that entitles you to an Irish passport, which also entitles you to live here under the CTA.

Please don't waste time worrying about it. The chances it will ever affect you are tiny. Good luck with your cancer treatment xx

Tunacheesequesadilla · 22/09/2025 10:16

Even if he did "send all the immigrants back", you and your mother are entitled to Irish passports so maybe apply for those, if you haven't already. It might give you some peace of mind.

Crunchingleaf · 22/09/2025 10:17

Legall he can do very little of what he says. However, his words do send out a message to those thinking of immigrating to UK that they aren’t welcome. A reduction in numbers in is probably the most that can be achieved.

If your mother is Irish can you not stay in UK long term. Due to CTA, Irish people aren’t subject to same rules as rest of EU.

This. I’m sorry you’re having to worry about what this self-promoting charlatan is saying at such a difficult time for you.

It won’t happen. Focus on taking care of yourself as best you can.

endofthelinefinally · 22/09/2025 10:29

Surely you can get your Irish passport, indefinite leave to remain and apply for British citizenship?

"his party would look to renegotiate the Good Friday Agreement as part of its plan to stop small boat crossings to England."

Nigel Farage, who has short grey hair parted to the side speaks at a podium with the words Operation Restoring Justice on it. He is wearing a dark suit, white shirt and red spotted tie.

Reform leader criticised for Good Friday Agreement proposal

The Reform leader said the agreement could be renegotiated if Britain leaves the European Convention on Human Rights.

As we often say on Mumsnet, when someone tells you who they are, believe them.

Claiming someone probably wouldn’t do their extreme stuff is how the US ended up with Trump

The GFA is also a thorn in his plan to leave the ECHR. Leaving the ECHR would impact the GFA, potentially leaving it needing renegotiation.
