If you were visiting a castle in England and the name Cromwell was mentioned numerous times. Who would automatically come to mind?

Thomas.

But I read/watched the Wolf Hall trilogy.

spanieleyes · 06/09/2025 04:37

Oliver

Justanotherdramalama · 06/09/2025 04:38

Interesting. 50/50 split so far.

I'd assume they meant Oliver. Although I wonder if Wolf Hall has made it less obvious. And context would probably also give it away.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/09/2025 04:47

Oliver

CanadianJohn · 06/09/2025 04:53

Oliver... I associate castles with armies and warfare, so Oliver would be my choice. If it was a palace, I'd probably be thinking Thomas.

PollyBell · 06/09/2025 05:15

Oliver

BlueEyedBogWitch · 06/09/2025 05:20

Oliver, because Thomas normally gets his full name.

Thomas

CoffeeCantata · 06/09/2025 07:03

That genocidal fanatic, Oliver, because he had lots of castles’slighted’, or deliberately damaged to prevent them being used again for defence.

ill never forgive him for this - especially at Kenilworth.

Nomnomnew · 06/09/2025 07:04

Oliver

Oliver. If you were in an old monastery, I would think of Thomas.

CoffeeCantata · 06/09/2025 07:06

And his (distantly related) ancestor Thomas destroyed the monasteries. Destroying art, architecture and visual culture seems to have been a family trait.

I think they’re both horrible.

CKP1717 · 06/09/2025 07:07

What's Wolf Hall?!

Itsnottheheatitsthehumidity · 06/09/2025 07:09

Oliver. I don't think of Thomas at all. Poor Thomas 💀. Sorry Thomas.

Yogabearmous · 06/09/2025 07:09

Oliver

Zapx · 06/09/2025 07:09

Thomas. But then I go to Hampton Court Palace a lot 🤣

superbakedpotato · 06/09/2025 07:10

Thomas, but mainly because of reading Wolf Hall as I thought he was an absolute sass queen in the books.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 06/09/2025 07:11

Thomas.

Although prior to gaining an interest in Tudor history many years ago it would have been Oliver.

What's Wolf Hall?!

Novel by Hillary Mantel, and a TV series.

This

Sausagenbacon · 06/09/2025 07:13

Why?
And what's the AIBU?

Oliver, because he had lots of castles’slighted’, or deliberately damaged to prevent them being used again for defence.

totally sensible imo.

REDB99 · 06/09/2025 07:14

It definitely depends on the context of Cromwell being said. In a castle talking about battles / defences etc I would think Oliver.
But I’m a huge Wolf Hall trilogy fan so seeing Cromwell in your post title Thomas came to mind first.
