To think it’s not sad to go for dinner at a fancy hotel used for filming?

We are on holiday in Sicily and near a hotel used for filming of a famous tv show. It has a very well rated restaurant located in said fancy hotel.

I thought it might be fun to go for a nice dinner at the hotel. DP says it’s sad to only want to go somewhere because it was used for filming. He thinks it’s a bit sad really, especially because we couldn’t afford to stay at the hotel. He thinks it’s wannabe to go and snoop around a posh place where we could only afford dinner

Sorry I really don't get your DH pov here at all.

KeepCalmAndCarryOnScrolling · 28/08/2025 11:05

Well, if it's a restaurant that has been on The Trip or any of Stanley Tucci's travels, then I'm with you OP! 😍

GleisZwei · 28/08/2025 11:05

I don't think it's 'sad', that's such a high school word imho, but it wouldn't interest me unless the food was off the scale good.

theheat · 28/08/2025 11:06

I think it's fun - was it the White Lotus?

ABitPissedOff100 · 28/08/2025 11:10

I'm with you - in Yosemite we went to the Awahnee (lovely hotel that we really couldn't ever afford) and had the cheapest drink and nibble on the menu just so we could have a good look round.

He's a party pooper !

squashyhat · 28/08/2025 11:16

That's just miserable. In Memphis we had an extortionate cocktail (or two) at the Peabody Hotel just so we could see the famous duck parade!

shiningstar2 · 28/08/2025 11:16

What is wrong with being interested to see about a hotel that's been on TV and has a reputation for good food? You can't afford to stay at the hotel so don't stay at the hotel. You can afford to eat at the restaurant so eat at the restaurant. In general hotel restaurants want and need the custom of non residents to keep going. If this hotel didn't want bookings from none residents it would say so. If you were planning to over stretch your budget to stay in a hotel you really couldn't afford just because it has been on TV I could understand your husband's pov but to eat there, when you would normally eat out on holiday and the restaurant takes money resident bookings ...why not. You have to eat somewhere, you are curious about the place and you may not pass this way again. It isn't 'sad' ..just part of the holiday experience. Enjoy!

I'll come with you 😀

I went to that hotel for dinner 20+ years ago on honeymoon. It was lovely. DH is being daft.

I'm with you - in Yosemite we went to the Awahnee (lovely hotel that we really couldn't ever afford) and had the cheapest drink and nibble on the menu just so we could have a good look round.

We also went in the Awahnee to show the teens "The Shining hotel". We just bought a snack from the shop and looked around, we didn't even use anything else apart from the shop! And when we went to San Diego we looked round Hotel Del Coronado where Some Like It Hot was filmed with Marilyn Monroe and had a good nosey all round that hotel's public areas before we had our pizza lunch there.

Tell your DH to loosen up a bit and have some fun!

I wonder if he's secretly worried about looking out of place, like an obvious impoverished imposter?! I'm passed caring about things like that. I just go where I would like to go as long as I'm allowed there and don't worry about not looking rich!

Steph341 · 28/08/2025 11:19

I'd be there like a shot OP.

AzurePanda · 28/08/2025 11:21

Is it the White Lotus four seasons in Taormina? If so I wouldn’t really recommend it. Very expensive and underwhelming food. Although it is fun to see it. Far better to drive to Savoca where the Godfather was filmed. Magical place and there’s a lovely local restaurant there.

DialSquare · 28/08/2025 11:22

I regularly go to hotels for dinner without staying there. Wouldn’t even cross my mind that someone would think it’s sad!

InMyOpenOnion · 28/08/2025 11:23

Film tourism is a thing. Of course it's not "sad" to want to visit iconic film and television locations. He's being miserable.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 28/08/2025 11:24

Yanbu he is being miserable and bringing down the vibe

TorroFerney · 28/08/2025 11:25

So you can’t go for dinner at a hotel whose accommodation prices you wouldn’t pay/cant afford? That’s a really odd outlook - does he think he willl feel sad knowing he’s not staying there?

dies he not know that in some hotels half the people in the dining room won’t be residents.

Am also interested where it is though. Country if you dint want to be too specific!

Comtesse · 28/08/2025 11:29

DH is very interested in the architecture of famous hotels and we regularly go for a mooch round iconic hotels to check out the decor. Have done this all over - Brazil, New York, Germany, Paris, London. Hotels are public places, it’s not like going into someone’s home!

rainandtrains · 28/08/2025 11:36

In Sri Lanka we visited a hotel famous for its architecture. We phoned in advanced and they welcomed us in for free and gave us a tour, and towels for the pool!

cheesycheesy · 28/08/2025 11:37

What a childish bore he is

WinWhenTheyreSinging · 28/08/2025 11:38

Assuming White Lotus, we went there when we were on Sicily. Fabulous food and experience, do it!

Blimey, was fabulous when we went.

ludicrouslycapaciousbags · 28/08/2025 11:40

White Lotus?

Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2025 11:41

DH wouldn't understand why I would want to do something like this but he loves me and would do it if it made me happy
