To think it’s not sad to go for dinner at a fancy hotel used for filming?

tarregone · 28/08/2025 11:00

We are on holiday in Sicily and near a hotel used for filming of a famous tv show. It has a very well rated restaurant located in said fancy hotel.

I thought it might be fun to go for a nice dinner at the hotel. DP says it’s sad to only want to go somewhere because it was used for filming. He thinks it’s a bit sad really, especially because we couldn’t afford to stay at the hotel. He thinks it’s wannabe to go and snoop around a posh place where we could only afford dinner

Why? He's being absurd imo

BauhausOfEliott · 28/08/2025 11:45

Your DH is being weird. The filming thing is irrelevant, really; it's totally normal to eat in a nice restaurant even if you couldn't afford to stay at the hotel it's based in. The majority of people who eat there won't be staying at the hotel. Loads of very famous restaurants are based in expensive hotels, but they're still separate entities. Does your DH also think you shouldn't have afternoon tea at Claridge's unless you're staying there?!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 28/08/2025 11:46

Of course not. Plenty of non residents eat in hotel restaurants if they are excellent, run by a celebrity chef, or otherwise well known (e.g. afternoon tea at The Ritz, Heston Blumental @ Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, Alain Ducasse @ The Dorchester). People even eat in one for the toilets (Sketch)! Your DP is being daft.

RightOnTheEdge · 28/08/2025 11:47

YANBU, He's being weird and miserable.

Notsurewheretostarthere · 28/08/2025 11:51

DH is ridiculous!

Weve been to loads of places for that reason!

Made DH stop at the Lobster Roll (The Affair) driving back from Montauk so I could get a selfie (it was closed out of season, we had our lobster rolls over the road instead!)

Also made him drive me to Ramsey St in Melbourne. (I was very respectful and just looked from the end of the street!)

Oganesson118 · 28/08/2025 11:57

I don't see any problem! I've not done it for a filming location but I have eaten at restaurants in some of the London hotels even when not staying there. If the restaurant is open to non residents then why on earth not.

I'm with you - in Yosemite we went to the Awahnee (lovely hotel that we really couldn't ever afford) and had the cheapest drink and nibble on the menu just so we could have a good look round.

I stayed just outside Yosemite as hotels are limited in those Parks. The Awahnee was nice but not $$$ nice.

I've eaten at a lot of expensive hotel restaurants but not stayed in the place. I'll buy a £50 set lunch but can't spend £500 or more for the night.

ThatCyanCat · 28/08/2025 11:59

What on earth is he on about?

helenatroy · 28/08/2025 12:05

I once spent the same amount on a single glass of wine in the Mandarin Oriental as I did for my bed that night in a youth hostel in Sydney. Would not chance a thing. Was a magical night in what was a holiday of a lifetime. Tell him to get over himself, get dressed up and go without him if you must. Think I know the hotel you’re speaking of. Googled it after watching white lotus.

I personally wouldn’t be interested but then again I’m not in the least bit wowed by celebrities or celebrity culture

PhuckTrump · 28/08/2025 12:15

We do this all the time. It’s always my DH who instigates and books the restaurants—he loves it. I don’t care either way—it’s always a good restaurant with great food, and I’m not the type to belittle his enjoyment.

whatsit84 · 28/08/2025 12:16

sounds fun to me! Went for afternoon tea in fancy hotel in Barbados we couldn’t afford (sandy lane) and had a great time!

sweetpickle2 · 28/08/2025 12:16

Does he think they quiz you on the door about why you've booked it?

He is being very weird OP.

If it's the White Lotus hotel, it's a beautiful hotel and stunning location in its own right. It's perfectly possible to see the location on screen and think it is utterly gorgeous and want to experience it for yourself if you get the opportunity. Nothing to do with 'celebrity'.

Rewis · 28/08/2025 12:19

Sounds like the most normal thing to do

PinkyFlamingo · 28/08/2025 12:22

I'm just back from Sicily and I stayed in the hotel I did because it's famous. Well famous to me as a Simple Minds fan 😂 Jim Kerr the lead singer owns it, Villa Angela in Taormina. He also lives slightly further up the hill. Gorgeous views of Mount Etna. Staff amazing.

KPPlumbing · 28/08/2025 12:33

There's someone famous who I admire, and she loves a particular bistro in Paris, so I had a glass of champagne at that bistro when I was there in her honour!

Your DH is a miserable git. Who cares about "sad" or not as a grown adult?

Cherrysoup · 28/08/2025 12:34

Family members traveled from up north to the Ritz for afternoon tea. I don’t think they could afford to stay there but had a lovely day out. I don’t think it’s at all ’sad’ to go to the restaurant, but then my DH is a big film fan and we went out of our way to see some locations whilst on road trips. Great if you can spend a bit of time there.

BeanQuisine · 28/08/2025 12:35

Misusing "sad" in that way reminds me of Kevin the Teenager.

PsychoHotSauce · 28/08/2025 12:36

I watched In Bruges last night. I have been to Bruges before but now want to go again and go up the tower. Guess I'm sad too!

Whole tourism industries are built around this concept. It's not the OP who is being weird.

Thundertoast · 28/08/2025 12:43

This has made me incredibly grateful to have finally found a partner who matches my 'why not?' energy on holiday!

In Sri Lanka we visited a hotel famous for its architecture. We phoned in advanced and they welcomed us in for free and gave us a tour, and towels for the pool!

One of the Bawa-designed hotels by any chance? I loved the Dambulla building.

BoredZelda · 28/08/2025 12:46

Aww bless him. He doesn’t think he belongs there. I guess also going to a stately home or castle isn’t for him either. All that snooping on places posh people used to live. 😆

I’d go myself if he isn’t up for it. I love being places I’ve seen on telly.
