To think it’s not sad to go for dinner at a fancy hotel used for filming?

We are on holiday in Sicily and near a hotel used for filming of a famous tv show. It has a very well rated restaurant located in said fancy hotel.

I thought it might be fun to go for a nice dinner at the hotel. DP says it’s sad to only want to go somewhere because it was used for filming. He thinks it’s a bit sad really, especially because we couldn’t afford to stay at the hotel. He thinks it’s wannabe to go and snoop around a posh place where we could only afford dinner

What about all the restaurants that ‘Montalbano’ went to? 🤔

DisabledDemon · 29/08/2025 19:34

Of course it's not sad - but he is being very silly.

If you extend that idea, you would miss out on loads of National Trust properties (used in period dramas), never go to The Ritz or The Savoy (period dramas - again!), avoid some locations as they are used constantly (Cotswolds) etc.

Where does he draw the line? Not even West Drayton seems to be safe and that doesn't sound terribly romantic although there was an episode of The Sweeney filmed there some time ago. And Genevieve in 1953.

Laurmolonlabe · 29/08/2025 19:46

Not my sort of thing, but I don't see why not- and no it's not sad.

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 29/08/2025 19:51

This is a perfectly normal thing to do. Your DH is weird

Goditsmemargaret · 28/08/2025 11:03

Sorry I really don't get your DH pov here at all.

I had similar from a friend who refused to window shop at Fauchon, a famous food hall in Paris. He said it made him feel like a pauper longing for the lifestyle of the rich. I told him to get over himself

AppropriateAdult · 29/08/2025 20:55

He’d hate me, OP; I went to Salzburg and stayed for three nights in the ‘The Sound of Music’ house…

TheOccupier · 29/08/2025 21:07

He sounds miserable. LTB for someone rich, that'll learn him!

Tuesdayschild50 · 29/08/2025 21:34

It's not sad at all... what's wrong with young and having some lovely food and a little snoop about I'm all for it .

BlueFlowers5 · 29/08/2025 23:18

Was it a hotel featured in Montalbano?

Diblin93 · 29/08/2025 23:49

It’s a nice restaurant. What’s his problem???

MibsXX · 30/08/2025 03:13

He's dead right.

DoinFineIThink · 30/08/2025 09:55

Well, he sounds a barrel of laughs. 🙄
If it was me, I'd say "well, I really want to visit. Do you?"
If he doesn't, go anyway and enjoy yourself. Life's too short, seriously.

Bleachedlevis · 30/08/2025 11:13

It’s just a bit of fun.

I watched In Bruges last night. I have been to Bruges before but now want to go again and go up the tower. Guess I'm sad too!

Don't go up the Belfry! Unless you're the opposite of a claustrophobe, if there is such a thing. Have a nice moules marinieres instead 😊

I personally wouldn’t be interested but then again I’m not in the least bit wowed by celebrities or celebrity culture

Did you mean that to come off as uber superior?

What on earth is wrong with seeing a place on TV or film and deciding you'd like to go there?

Eating at a hotel you aren't staying at is perfectly normal, the DH sounds like a right bundle of fun

calm down! I never said there was anything wrong with it, it’s just not something that would interest me

That's just miserable. In Memphis we had an extortionate cocktail (or two) at the Peabody Hotel just so we could see the famous duck parade!

Edited

We did exactly this, it’s such fun and part of travelling and broadening your appreciation of things like architecture and cuisine to do just this. Hope you go/went and had fun.

whatohwhattodo · 31/08/2025 07:35

Not quite as classy but we went to Belfast and had fish & chips in ‘Fionnulas’

dh280125 · 01/09/2025 11:18

It sounds like my absolute idea of fun. What is wrong with your DH? You're on holiday ffs. Go without him if you must and send him pics of every delicious morsel...

NavyTurtle · 04/09/2025 12:51

I work with someone who is quite Pass agg. I could not be married to one !

helenatroy · 04/09/2025 21:28

Did she smell of vinegar?
