To think it’s not sad to go for dinner at a fancy hotel used for filming?

We are on holiday in Sicily and near a hotel used for filming of a famous tv show. It has a very well rated restaurant located in said fancy hotel.

I thought it might be fun to go for a nice dinner at the hotel. DP says it’s sad to only want to go somewhere because it was used for filming. He thinks it’s a bit sad really, especially because we couldn’t afford to stay at the hotel. He thinks it’s wannabe to go and snoop around a posh place where we could only afford dinner

Speaking as someone who had an extremely expensive salad at the Watergate Hotel just to be in the building a few years ago, I’m #teamOP. So what if it’s sad objectively? I was happy!

AnxiousAnnieeeeeeeeee · 28/08/2025 12:48

I mean, I can just about afford afternoon tea at the Savoy but I couldn’t afford to stay there - like most people who go for afternoon tea!

Not sad at all, it’s fun I think and nice to experience different things. Your H sounds like a party pooper

One of the Bawa-designed hotels by any chance? I loved the Dambulla building.

That's the one! It was amazing.

CinnamonCinnabar · 28/08/2025 12:51

Sounds great fun, if you go please update if it's worth visiting!
I love a fancy hotel afternoon tea, bonus points for chandeliers and twirly plasterwork.

ShodAndShadySenators · 28/08/2025 12:58

Is he normally a bit of a fun sponge?

These people are tiresome how they drag everyone else down.

FTR I don't see anything wrong (or "sad") with your idea but it might be nicer to go with someone else

cestlavielife · 28/08/2025 13:00

Leave him behind with his takeaway pizza. Go and have fun

maltravers · 28/08/2025 13:03

Team OP here. I have very fond memories of taking the boat over to the Lake Palace in Udaipur in 1989 for a meal. I was otherwise budget travelling as a student on £7 a day. You regret the things you don’t do sometimes, try to talk him round.

Nessiesfoodprovider · 28/08/2025 13:04

Your husband doesn't deserve to go. Leave him outside with a glass of lemonade and a bag of crisps.
Actually, scrap that idea. Go for another holiday yourself and stay in the film star of a hotel. We only get one life, live it!

OneMintWasp · 28/08/2025 13:06

My biggest tip for life is not to care what other people think of you - unless everyone thinks you're nasty etc then its worth considering the way you treat others! But if its not harming or upsetting others who cares.
Maybe it is sad to visit the restaurant (I don't think it is), maybe it isn’t. I think its a whole lot sadder to not do something you want to do because others might think its 'sad'.

OhHellolittleone · 28/08/2025 13:06

I think it’s pretty normal. Who stays at raffles in Singapore… not many! But everyone goes for a drink!

LimoncelloSpritzplease · 28/08/2025 13:06

It’s not sad. I would go with you.

But if he thinks it is I would go in my own.

Love Sicily which hotel and TV series is it White Lotus?

AgnesX · 28/08/2025 13:08

I love going for dinner in nice places eg Cromlix (just as an example) We could afford to stay there, but only as a very special treat I suppose, dinner is much more manageable.

It's lovely seeing how the other half live as I totter out high on real fizz!

Springisintheairohyeah · 28/08/2025 13:12

Not sad. I've stayed in two hotels purely because they were used in an episode of a period TV show I like. It was fun. No one else will care just go and enjoy

Ivyy · 28/08/2025 13:13

Sad as in the 90’s slang for cringe, or he’s genuinely sad you couldn’t afford to stay there op?

Ponderingwindow · 28/08/2025 13:14

DH tries to pull this attitude. I tell
him he lacks whimsy and carry on with my plans.

CheeseDanish · 28/08/2025 13:14

Surely it depends on whether it also has a reputation for good food? Otherwise just walk past, or go in and have a look, or a drink or something?

I'll admit that I was in Marseille having a very average meal at a restaurant on the port (not of my choosing, it was DH's work thing) and was baffled by people taking photographs from outside, or coming in and taking photos of the upstairs mezzanine level, until someone pointed out that it was the restaurant where Colin Firth proposes to his Portuguese cleaner, because he fancied her when she took all her clothes off, despite the fact that, despite them both living in France, neither of them apparently speaks French.

On holidays I often go for drinks and dessert in nearby 5 stars ...often you can enjoy the pool if you book a massage or something...its a wonderful way to have a luxury day..(without crazy expense)...not sad at ALL

SliceofTosst · 28/08/2025 13:16

With you. It's a different opportunity and a one off chance. Go on your own!

MissAmbrosia · 28/08/2025 13:26

I would go. In fact i tried to but it was booked up when we were there. :(

ABitPissedOff100 · 28/08/2025 13:28

Budget travelling in the 90s - popped in Raffles for an Eyewateringly expensive singapore sling that probably cost the same as a week of accommodation in a hostel. Loved it. Was very worried they weren't going to let us in and had put on our bestest clothes - which were still fairly awful after several months of travelling.

I've also been known to pop into very nice hotels all over the world just to use their loos...as they are always lovely.

latetothefisting · 28/08/2025 13:29

What? Unless the restaurant is somewhere you wouldn't go otherwise (i.e. specialises in meat dishes when you were both vegans), why is it any sadder than choosing a restaurant for any other reason - the type of food it serves, its prices, fancy decor, how close it is, if it looks nice from the outside, whether it's busy or not, or just whether you can get in!

Presumably if you're on holiday you need to eat out somewhere anyway, you're suggesting somewhere that serves nice food and has a good reputation, the famous part is just an extra bonus.

Most restaurants attached to hotels actively expect and want non-guests to eat there too - most guests will also want to try different places and not eat at their hotel every night so they would struggle to stay open if non-guests didn't also come.

grumpygrape · 28/08/2025 13:30

Don't know the hotel posters are talking about but many years ago we 'did' 'Tea at the Ritz' and 'Cocktails at the Savoy', just because. Both were a brilliant experience and great for people watching.

When in New Zealand we visited LotR locations which was fun and on the way home via Singapore we, obviously, had to have Singapore Slings at Raffles. Again, wonderful fun.

I think it's about experiences rather than being performative.

ViaRia01 · 28/08/2025 13:32

On our honeymoon in USA, we went out of our way to have breakfast at Du Pars, the favoured coffee stop for TV police detective Bosch. It’s not posh there though, but the TV show was one of the main reasons for the visit.

RedwallMattimeo · 28/08/2025 13:33

If it’s the White Lotus hotel, then we were there on honeymoon a decade ago and the sunset from the terrace of the restaurant is amazing. If you’re the sort of person who gets bitten by bugs, you might want to spray yourself with some insect repellent before you go. Bugs love me and I had to dash up to the room and spray myself. DH didn’t get bitten once and wasn’t wearing any repellent

squashyhat · 28/08/2025 11:16

That's just miserable. In Memphis we had an extortionate cocktail (or two) at the Peabody Hotel just so we could see the famous duck parade!

Me too :)😍
