Racist Threads

PhilippaGeorgiou · 27/08/2025 13:11

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I thought AIBU would be ok. I am not running this as a poll, because I don't care about anyones opinions on the matter. And if anyone wants to respond with more racism, don't bother because I won't be engaging for even a second.

Right at the moment this site is not being overrun by racists because MNHQ has determined that there are no racists on the site and it's abuse to tell anyone they are a racist (even when they are). However, there are multiple threads expressing racism every single day, all rehearsing the same old misinformation and bogus narratives. Not one of those posters want to engage - they become abusive and offensive if anyone produces remotely evidenced facts. Their "facts" are the only truthful facts. Everyone else is a "woman hating woke leftist". Which is apparently not abus, according to MNHQ. MNHQ have made is abundantly clear that they will not moderate misinformation, and are blithely happy to allow most abuse to stand.

Here's the thing - there's pretty much nobody on those threads that is genuinely interested in having a discussion or debating information. There is nobody jumping on those threads saying that they don't really understand the different views and positions and would like to know more. Unsurprising, anyone who actually wants to explore the issue, the absolute last place to look to do that would be yet another toxic thread here. Probably the only good thing is that it really is highly unlikely anyone with a real curiousity about the subject would look to form opinions based on the toxic formula of MN.

The only thing that these threads are good for is clicks and ££££'s in the bank for Justine and the site.

So anti-racists - I suggest that we all stop answering these threads altogether. I know it is hard to see the racism stand (although apparently not for the owners of the site or the moderators) unchallenged, but every single challange does nothing but feed the flames and earn money for MN. You all know that the people who are not racists will spend 20% of their posts posting misinformation and 80% posting goady barbs and personal insults, just to keep the threads going. It will be incredibly boring for them if they only have each other to talk to. The threads will die without oxygen. And MN makes no money out of clicks that haven't happened. It's a win all around.

And if you want to do something proactive, instead of engaging with people who aren't going to listen, why not raise your concerns about the racism with the advertisers? They are being associated with it by their presence, and are clearly far more likely to influence the owners of the site than the people posting on it.

Alternatively, if you’re concerned about energy bills, how about banning fossil fuel profits ?

Good lord, you don’t want to hamstring the industries most likely to allow you to heat your home effectively! She wants cheaper energy bills, not skyrocketing energy prices on inefficient energy sources!

That was a neat diversion.
We cannot afford to shelter the world 's problems. However much we sympathise.

That's what Farage said when asked if he meant to send people back to Afghanistan where they risk being tortured or killed.

He wants to pay the Taliban for the privilege

It was an appropriate diversion to you trying to blame asylum seekers for expensive fossil fuels !

It's easier to have a scapegoat

You can be concerned about women's rights without hating trans people in the same way you can be concerned about immigration without dehumanising asylum seekers.

I am aware of that, my point was labelling people is a silly tactic.

Dialogue and debate always wins, as seen when the no debate wall was kicked down and those wrongly called transphobic stopped living in fear of that label.

Rather than calling people racist as you don’t agree with their views, debate them, challenge them and sometimes also be open to how/why others have formed their views.

It would be cheaper if their profits and bonuses were capped.

Are you going to give any examples? Real tangible examples of what is seen that is racist. If not, then it’s not true and you are making it up. Which is a ‘you’ problem.

I would, but many of the ones I have seen personally I have reported and have been deleted by MNHQ for being racist and/or hate speech.

You can confirm with MNHQ that this is the case if you wish as they probably will remember. Dawn deleted about 5 in a row at one point.

So we shouldn't call people racists when they express racist views?

Fizzer5 · 27/08/2025 18:46

This is another risk I will take.
We have recently commemorated the end of WW2. and the struggles and the casualties.
At what point do we say to the young men " Go back and fight for your country, overthrow these tyrannical regimes."
Don't skulk here.

If you restrict their ability to expand supply (which various green regulations are wont to do), then that limited supply is going to skyrocket in price—ironically giving them bigger profits. You are kind of their best friend, since green alternatives kind of suck.

RingoJuice · 27/08/2025 18:48

TopPocketFind · 27/08/2025 18:46

So we shouldn't call people racists when they express racist views?

So we shouldn’t call people transphobic if they express transphobic views?

(ie this is very subjective)

Lonelycrab · 27/08/2025 18:50

Asylum seekers are not the source of this country’s problems; they are a tiny blip.

Wealth inequality and economic imbalance (CoL finance industry) IS.

A handful of people are getting staggeringly rich from the U.K. and its demise, many of them from overseas, and they’ve sold the idea that immigration is the root cause via offshore media companies like Geebeebies, the Mail and the Sun.
Farage will profit massively from this of course too.

And some of the population are falling for that, hook line and sinker, and are prepared to throw away their human rights now because some foreign billionaires have told them it’s the only way to make things better.

Racism isn't subjective

And yes, if people express transphobic views, you can call them transphobic.

Let them keep profits from renewables. If you don’t like the migrant situation now, you’re not ready for what that’s gonna look like as the climate changes and far bigger groups are forced to move to cooler areas.

Lndnmummy · 27/08/2025 18:56

@Mumsnet does not care that racism is rife on their site. Year after year its the same old story. I avoid most threads these days tbh, for my sanity and mental health.

@JollyUmberDeer it is not @PandoraSocks job to feed you evidence and examples so that you can objection handle them with endless whataboutary.

You are either an active anti racist, or not. It is very simpe.

Indeed. Racism is illegal. And it is NOT subjective. If it was, the only person's opinion who would matter is the victim subjected to racism. People like to call it bias this and unconscious that. It is RACISM and the person saying it is racist, however aghast they feel about being called out on it.

This call for evidence is a well worn tactic.

Climate change isn’t driving migration. Poverty is—so when you block developing countries from building cheap, fossil fuel-derived energy sources, you are essentially hampering their ability to progress.

Note that you aren’t getting climate migrants from the Gulf or Singapore, both of which have extreme environmental conditions.

Anyway climate change is not even a basis for asylum so … yeah.

It will. Parts of the world with high and fast-growing populations may well become uninhabitable. We’re not there yet, but it’s very likely.

I think you are probably right PG.

I have spent a lot of time arguing against the racism, producing actual facts and figures. It is all ignored, piled on, laughed at.

I do see @OchonAgusOchonOh 's point too about tacit approval, though. But if we did all stop engaging and MN became just an echo chamber of racism, maybe MNHQ would be more stringent.

MNHQ has got a bit better recently IME and a few of the more obvious racist trolls have had the boot. But others are left to run riot.

Anyway, no doubt this thread will be piled on very soon.

Yes I’ve often read your posts against the relentless racism. It’s exhausting trying to argue with them to be honest 😞.

Newsenmum · 27/08/2025 19:21

If you don’t post and it’s just them, they think theyve won. If even just one little post crops up it ruins their stream of threads and interrupts them, brings it back to reality. You don’t have to post again. It also means that someone else who comes across it will see your post and feel like someone is on their side.

Anyone who has to call themselves an anti racist probably has something to prove.

Normal people don’t feel the need to wear a badge and tell people about it like ‘look at me, over here, right here, I’m an anti racist’.

And they may not. The Sahara is greening actually both due to natural geological cycles as well as higher CO2. This stuff isn’t really as predictable as you think.

SpaceRaccoon · 27/08/2025 19:23

And yes, if people express transphobic views, you can call them transphobic.

What do you consider transphobic? Eg the statement "humans cannot change sex, and gender is a social construct" - transphobic or not?
