Rip the flags down! A call for action!

The sudden appearance of the English flag hung on lamp posts, railings etc has absolutely sickened me, and my dd.
I am proud to be British, but the misappropriation of the flag by thugs, intending to intimidate, is absolutely not acceptable in a diverse society.
So tonight myself and my adult dd ripped them down in our area, and tomorrow we will be going on a flag hunt, to rip down any more we find.
I would strongly urge those of you that feel the same way, to also remove them, as long as you feel safe and comfortable to do it.
Posting in AIBU for traffic.

People like you are reinforcing the notion that “we aren’t allowed to fly our flag” and perpetuating the problem.

The more you tear down the more you are proving them right.

100%

I’m so glad you’re able to raise a wry smile.
I’m sure the people of Southport would return your smile, after all the British don’t riot do they?
And if you read my post PROPERLY, when you have finished your little smile, you will perhaps be able to comprehend that I don’t hate the flag at all, I hate the misappropriation by thugs to use it to try and intimidate.

But you think it's alright for you and your daughter to go round acting like thugs, destroying and vandalising other people's property?

I think you’ve made your point, and if it makes you feel better shimmying up and down lamp posts etc., knock yourself out.

I rather suspect there’s more to your motives than meets the eye, but hey.

If you leave your property on a lamppost, at what point does it stop being yours?

mutinyonthetwix · 26/08/2025 19:27

If people think the English flag needs reclaiming from some right wing threat (not that I am such a person) then surely the answer is to crack on and reclaim it. Stick up England flags everywhere with "migrants welcome" written on them. Put up those crotchet postbox toppers with people holding hands on an English flag.

I can't think of anything more counterproductive than acting out the very threat the people putting up the flags claim to exist.

lotsofpatience · 26/08/2025 19:31

You'd better come armed if you try to rip my flag.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 26/08/2025 19:41

In my town, the painting on zebra crossings has been accompanied by the slogan "we're full". I wonder what they mean?

Bubbabluesutube · 26/08/2025 19:43

Its illegal to rip down flags as its a public order 1986 as its a criminal offence.

Well fed, what wonderful news!

I’m finding this whole flag debacle so quintessentially British that it’s making me smile.

On the one hand, you have a cohort of people feeling ‘a bit miffed’ at the ‘less than ideal’ situation of thousands of undocumented migrants entering the country and what do they do to protest? Murder? Pillage? No, they hang some flags and paint a few on some roundabouts.

Then you have the other side saying “see here, we don’t like that! This is not ideal!” And going out with their scissors to remove said flags.

It’s quite cute, really. This is the extent of how we will show how disgruntled we are, regardless of which ‘side’ you fall on.

Then there is the irony of being spectacularly unaware that the flag you hate so much represents a culture that is so tolerant, that you’re allowed to hate your own flag. And remove it without fear of retaliation from your government. I wonder what would happen if a citizen of North Korea removed national symbols from public spaces.

What a perfectly English response and so accurate. I love it! Thank you for passing on the smile.

It’s illegal to put them up on lamp posts but that’s not stopping them is it?

I’ll decide when I’ve made my point thanks, not you.
And what possible ulterior motive could I have?

I did have a look;

The Public Order Act 1986 doesn't give a specific power to "take down flags," but rather prohibits the display of visible representations, including flags, if they are threatening, abusive, or insulting and cause "harassment, alarm, or distress" to others, or if their display is intended to cause fear or provoke violence. Therefore, a flag display can only be taken down if it constitutes an offence under the Act, such as by causing fear of violence or harassment.

You’d have to be able to prove their intention was to cause alarm or distress - which it is.

I think there’s an element of it that doesn’t allow desecration of the flag. But taking it off a lamppost isn’t desecrating it, sooo… think you’re good 😂

I'm brown and British so it's my flag too. You're just giving them what they want by ripping it down. The person I know that owns the most England flags is my dad and he's happily been flying them for years. Right wingers don't own the flag, British people do. Lean into it and claim it back.

I suggest you educate yourself.

Labour are still centrist. Lib Dems are centrist. There is a centre. You may not like it, but it’s there.

The people hanging flags from lampposts and graffitiing road markings are the ones destroying and vandalising other people’s property. If you want your flag, that’s fine - but fly it on your own land.

They absolutely are centrist. Where do you think they lie, politically?
Lib Dems are making very sensible statements all the time - unfortunately all the press would rather platform Farage and his 4 MPs.
