Their stuff looks lovely (online on skinny models anyway) - have heard a few good things recently as i had written them off a few years ago. Anyone use them and happy with the product, quality, returns etc

i hate online clothes shop but the high street/town centers are dead in many places now so options are really limited often to just M&S, Next, H&M or Primark

Yep, in defence.

Exactly

It is if you don't shop at a supermarket with a clothing range in store. Aldi, Lidl, Farmfoods and Heron don't stock clothing. Some may choose to only shop there if that fits their budget or is their local supermarket.

No wonder you are being called out. You are wilfully ignoring all the alternatives that are cheaper, less problematic, and no more effort.

Wexone · 20/08/2025 14:44

SquishedMallow · 20/08/2025 12:27

Absolutely...

It not naive - if you look deeper into companies, most do come from China however do regular audits, look at the factories that they are used to prdice these, pay these factories a proper fee, open transparent suplly chain, Qulaity control and UK standards applied - these are NOT done by Shein and Temu
Everyone has access to google, use it for 5 mins and you will learn alot about Shein and Temu practices

boredwfh · 20/08/2025 14:45

Had some good quality thick cotton t-shirts for £2.50 each off there for my child recently that I was impressed with.

GenieGenealogy · 20/08/2025 14:48

Who knew the Shein-Shite fans were such delicate little flowers.

They are not being "attacked". They are being called out for their poor decision making and reasoning. Of course if you come out with clearly untruthful nonsense about not being able to buy cheaper elsewhere, or nonsense about class and loads of other irrelevant issues people are going to call you out on that.

So how is a person who does not drive and on a limited income expected to travel to their local Sainsburys, which may be around 10 miles away just to buy clothes with their weekly shop? They would almost certainly choose the option of walking to the budget supermarket that may be a 5/10 minute walk away. The middle class privilege is strong on this thread. Some families can't afford the bus fare to travel to what you deem a better option.

TheLudditesWereRight · 20/08/2025 14:55

Shops are not the only place to get clothes. You can order home deliveries from Vinted, or get free bundles on FB or NextDoor. That might not suit you if you insist on new, but you can't say that Shein is the only cheap and convenient option out there.

Again, you are choosing to participate in a discussion about SHEIN.

If you can't cope with people pointing out the issues associated with these companies, maybe just don't click on the link.

I can cope, hence why I keep coming back 😂 I’m loving the outrage about something you can’t change and that millions do.

Do you drive? Have an iphone? Eat meat from supermarkets? Fly in a plane? Etc
Come back and get all preachy when you’re living off the land in a secluded hut.

I think it's more the anti sheiners that are delicate. Won't accept "I will continue to shop at SHEIN" without acting like I've just admitted I've set up a direct debit to Kim Jong un!

Accept that people do something you don't approve of without guilt tripping them.

Didn't you say shein is your "only flaw"? So presumably you never do any of these things either? You're posting from your secluded hut on your handmade device are you?

But some people don't want to do that. And that's their choice. it might not sit well with you , but under 'crimes of the century' it doesn't feature for me I'm afraid.

It's not a guilt trip. It's just an opinion. Nobody else has to "accept" your shopping habits. We are well aware that we cannot make you change but we obliged to ignore harmful consumerism to make you feel better.

SquishedMallow · 20/08/2025 15:12

And anyone comparing SHEIN to Primark? Have you ever bought anything from Primark?! It's threadbare and shapeless and made out of the most tatty material. SHEIN on the other hand is stylish, multiple choices. Especially for someone like me who is only 5ft. Never has buying trousers been so easy! I don't do much for myself to be honest. So if it's my guilty sin, then it is !

One message would suffice with "I don't approve of your choices " then I could respond with "ok". Job done. But it's repeated predictable messages guilt tripping you obviously don't care about the children.

A look doesn’t have to mean a certain lifestyle. Sometimes it’s just a look people want to have. Most environmentalists I’ve known and seen have been jeans and tee kind of people.

Thanks for answering.

Sure. You do you. Just don't wring your hands and claim unethical clothes shopping is your only choice.

Alternative lifestyles get co-opted by capitalism. that's how it works. https://naomiklein.org/no-logo/

Why can't we discuss the ethics of shein in isolation? Why are our other choices relevant?

Also, btw? Currently, no, no, no and no. Although I'm about to give in on the driving due to poor public transport, to be fair.

China uses cotton picked by Uighurs that they're currently ethnic cleansing. They use child labour and people don't have human rights, never mind labour laws.

And the West, and the rest of us in terms of our purchases of other Chinese products are doing what exactly in opposition to this?

You cant move for discussion about the historic African slave trade and protests about Gaza etc, but none of us are seemingly bothered enough to cause a big fuss about this, apart from silently refuse to by things from Shein?

Ive got no skin in the game, I dont use the site, I dont intend to, not for this reason but I dont buy stuff like that. But I do buy plenty on Amazon which mostly is made in Chinese sweatshops most likely, supporting a government who supports slavery. Just like the rest of us.

Of course it's been repeated, it's a long thread with lots of contributors. It's not as though you've adding something revolutionary with each new post...

Indeed. We're all at it in one way or another. You'd be very rich indeed if every purchase choice you made was to the benefit of the greater good. Most people only have the capacity to take on the problems of their own self and their nearest and dearest, whilst being mindful and courteous in their conduct with others and the wider world. We need heroes : but we can't all be one. Repeating myself: this one's just not my battle I'm afraid.

Forgotthebins · 20/08/2025 15:26

But it is your battle because you’re shopping at Shein. You picked a side. It’s not like you’re making no impact either way.

And I won’t judge you for that as a non driver myself. It will make your life easier but at a cost environmentally.
And I won’t give in on the shein because I love the choice and cheapness.
It’s easy to be hypocritical, we all do it. We do what we can in certain areas and are flawed elsewhere
