Their stuff looks lovely (online on skinny models anyway) - have heard a few good things recently as i had written them off a few years ago. Anyone use them and happy with the product, quality, returns etc

i hate online clothes shop but the high street/town centers are dead in many places now so options are really limited often to just M&S, Next, H&M or Primark

Tell me you're very middle class that's never dealt with a major personal problem in your life without telling me you're very middle class and have never had major personal/family/health major upheaval?

Very judgmental comments and very wide of the mark unfortunately . . .

Very judgmental comments and very wide of the mark unfortunately . . .

My brother in law and his wife are horrendous and frequently lie about my family to the world press. What's your problem? 😄

SquishedMallow · 20/08/2025 12:41

GenieGenealogy · 20/08/2025 12:31

Yes because obviously people who have never had "personal upheaval" can choose not to shop at Shein or swap shower gel for bar soap (which is cheaper).

You are totally failing in making your justifications here.

You're forcing your choices, which you believe to be the only correct choice, because that's an area of concern for you, one that's your battle you will pick. That, is absolutely fair enough (and genuinely: good for you) however, what you do not reserve the right to do is decide that other people have to also choose that as their hill to die on. They don't have to. And you don't get to dictate what they should and shouldn't do and make them feel like a lesser human for it.

I reiterate: I have done and continue to do good in the world. I'm satisfied that I'm a half decent person. With flaws, of course. I have to pick what hills I am willing to die on : and I'm afraid ethically sourced clothes (there aren't many if you look far enough into it ) are not my hill to die on. You can see that as wrong. Such is your right. But I don't have the capabilities or will to take on every problem. And I won't. I buy from SHEIN because on balance: it meets my needs.

I live in an area with a high eastern European immigrant population. Those Lithuanian, Romanian and polish workers work from 6am until 8pm on a little pay with poor breaks and no annual leave or sick pay. Many aren't here legally. They're standing all day and have back problems. They're sacked if they're off sick. It's effectively slave labour. I expect people still buy chicken in the supermarkets. It's all wrong. It's upsetting. There's so many examples like this. You can just keep adding and adding and adding to which cause you want to fight.

Again well said. These posters remind me of vegans who won’t shut up about it. Superior as hell, they love it 😂

Which is why the planet is doomed. It is possible to make ethical choices with little money.

  • use markets for fruit and veg - little packaging and cheaper and better quality
  • stop washing clothing that has only been worn once - saves water, energy, laundry powder and reduced wear and tear on clothes
  • walk if you can
  • if you can't walk it, can you cycle it?
  • stop buying plastic packaged food wherever you can
  • make your own yoghurt, cheap easy and less plastic
  • turn the water off whilst you are lathering hair and body in the shower
  • buy bar soap not gel, cheaper and lasts a lot longer
  • use laundry sheets or powder that comes in cardboard
  • stop buying new clothes, you can only wear one pair of jeans at a time etc etc

Off to look at yoghurt makers on Temu now thanks

PrincessofWells · 20/08/2025 12:46

@SquishedMallow you are not wholly personally responsible for the damage to the planet, but if we all thought and acted like you, the planet will not survive.

It's easy to make changes without substantially altering your lifestyle.

Yes, you are right. I do get that. And it is the right thing for us all to take responsibility for our planet. I agree with you. I do try my best not to be wasteful, recycle, use my bike etc. it's just I admit : the SHEIN thing may be my weakness.

Waitingfordoggo · 20/08/2025 13:27

Gosh, the Shein shoppers are ever so defensive- I wonder why that is? If you’re convinced there is nothing wrong with shopping at Shein, why are you here banging on about the middle class, rapists and immigrants etc? All just strawmen.

It’s honestly really easy not to shop at Shein- it’s not any sort of sacrifice at all compared to giving up your car or becoming vegan which are much bigger decisions for an individual to make.

As plenty of others have pointed out, you’ll get similar prices in Primark and Tesco but with a smaller impact on the environment and human rights (and you’ll have the assurance that your clothes are unlikely to catch fire, which is always nice).

I’m so glad my children have a conscience around these sorts of consumer decisions. Hopefully there are more like this in the next generations.

AstonUniversityPotholeDepartment · 20/08/2025 13:28

Make your choices. No-one else can stop you. But don't paint working-class people as incapable of having class solidarity with working class people in other countries to excuse yourself.

The rest of us have all kinds of things going in our personal lives, too. It's not just Shein shoppers who have shit happen to them. Hmm

Waitingfordoggo · 20/08/2025 13:28

Oh, and most of the people I know who make their own yoghurt and bread are very firmly working class! It saves them money for starters.

DancingNotDrowning · 20/08/2025 13:35

SquishedMallow · 20/08/2025 12:27

Absolutely...

This is demonstrably false.

Not buying from shein requires no head space at all.

No one is asking you to source clothing spun from the wool of hand reared, yoga practicing bunnies and stitched under a full moon by fairies with PHDs who sip chamomile tea while performing interpretive dance tutorials on couture embroidery.

you’re literally being asked to stick a packet of three for £5 T-shirts into your supermarket trolly instead of buying from a company that employs slaves.

it’s not hard

Because they’re being piled on by so called do gooders. Your kids will make their own choices, and probably hide the ones you would judge so fiercely.

Primark can be cheap but doesn’t have the choice, it’s good for plain things.

It's not a "pile on". It's a discussion. You shein lovers haven't been particularly nice either if you're honest with yourselves... Plenty of judgement coming from you too.

It is if you don't shop at a supermarket with a clothing range in store. Aldi, Lidl, Farmfoods and Heron don't stock clothing. Some may choose to only shop there if that fits their budget or is their local supermarket.

This is really interesting. In my youth, I was very alternative, part of the lifestyle, clothes and everything else. Part of that was cultural. We didn’t just want to look alternative, we wanted to be alternative. And part of that was speaking up for the majority world, caring about the environment, speaking truth to power, protesting the mainstream zeitgeist.

Is it now just important to look alternative?

Alternative lifestyles get co-opted by capitalism. that's how it works. https://naomiklein.org/no-logo/

Again, it's a debate not a personal attack. If you're offended by people pointing out the ethical and environmental cost of the clothes you buy then that's on you.

Again, you are choosing to participate in a discussion about SHEIN.

If you can't cope with people pointing out the issues associated with these companies, maybe just don't click on the link.

I love SHEIN (in fact everything I'm wearing as we speak is from SHEIN )

Prices are literally unbeatable. Great quality (stuff I've purchased anyway) and looks good. Takes a week approximately to arrive , never had to return anything.

I only ever buy from other shops in a sale now. It's the big giants fault why people are turning to SHEIN. You can pay £65 for a pair of trousers from River Island (a more middle tiered priced shop) or you can pay £4.79 from SHEIN. It's a no brainer. Retailers here have gotten greedy and used to upping the profiteering. Now they're being pushed out of business. Some of that is their own fault .

People talk of the ethics. But all clothes shops are at it to various degrees. And I'm not ultra wealthy or terribly middle class and I have to pick my 'save the world' battles. Most everyday people aren't in that privileged position to take a stand of big problems outside of their control.

I get all my clothes for free from a local swap shop. Cheaper, better quality, greener, more ethical and community-building.

You’re not being “piled on”

you’re being called out for making shit choices.

Choices that demonstrably harm children, minorities and the environment.

Choices that cause actual, tangible harm and suffering.

If a neighbour kept a child in their basement, forcing them to work 17 hours a day you’d call the police. If they asked you if you wanted them to do a couple of hours cleaning for you you’d be horrified. But because it’s a child in a foreign country you’re quite happy to play your part in the slave trade. It’s grim
