Dirty AirBnB-gutted

Booked an Airbnb, looked fine in photos, nothing spectacular but fine. It's so grimy,
Stained cups. One cup actually dirty with what looks like hot chocolate.
Cupboards all smell mouldy.
There's an old chopping board in one press and that is actually covered in black mold.
Windows haven't been cleaned on outside.
Grass not cut-weeds in garden.
Floor in living room dirty, you can see footprints.

AIBU to think this is unacceptable?
To add, it wasn't cheap.

Edited to add-there is a broken chair.

Pictures and email and report. Clean is important.

MyAcornWood · 14/08/2025 19:05

Well obviously no one is going to pop on here and argue that staying in a shithole is acceptable. As above, raise merry hell over it!

This, you don't even need to ask if you're unreasonable, send the photos and information to Airbnb straight away and see if they'll find an alternative

I just wanted a sense check MyAcornWood, is this just one's of those things and to get over it. I'm really upset.

absolutely do not just get over it. I don’t blame you for being so upset, it’s terribly disappointing especially when nothing is cheap these days!

Take pictures and complain. We had similar once. The host was mortified when they found out. They had arranged for a deep clean and the cleaners let them down with no notice.

They arranged for another cleaning company to come in asap, gave us a 50% discount, apologised profusely and sent a hamper full of local treats for all the inconvenience.

I don't even know how to complain? Just send a msg to host? This has never happened before.

We just left to have a walk, and noticed the walls are also dirty, handprints, grime.

mumsickles · 14/08/2025 19:30

Are the beds clean? Is there anywhere else you could stay or go home?

cyvguhb · 14/08/2025 19:38

Doesnt Airbnb have a message system for communicating with the horne owner? What about customer services, is there a reason you're not getting in the case to get something sorted?

Treatingmyself · 14/08/2025 19:39

Message the host with photos now, why are you on here moaning?!

sciaticafanatica · 14/08/2025 19:40

Message host via air b&b

RonnIeAl77 · 14/08/2025 19:43

It’s a better use of your time to rectify the situation to contact the host surely, than post here?!

Campingisnexttogodliness · 14/08/2025 19:43

Please complain..the host may have paid a cleaner and trust it is clean...
*I clean for hosts.
We had had lots of hoax refund demands for things I absolutely know are lies.Without pics.. . Photos and get complaining.
I mean why wouldn't you?

Candlesandmatches · 14/08/2025 19:49

Your write to the host. Take photos. Also contact Airbnb support. You should be offered something different and a refund

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 14/08/2025 19:50

Rather than going for a walk, you need to be investigating the whole property for any other issues and taking photos of each and every thing.

Then you contact the host

and you contact AirB&B, there are several ways to contact them, and there is a live chat !

and decide what action / remedy you want / need
instead of being ' upset ' be active

are you leaving or staying
do you need a cleaner in now
or will a cleaner tomorrow suffice
do you need the owner to come round - if the owner is local - many of mine have been
or do you want AirB&B to find you somewhere else
or do you want a full refund

decide what you want / need
and ask for it

LlynTegid · 14/08/2025 19:51

If it is in the UK, I think you should look to claim via the small claims court. I think this verges on the crime of obtaining money by deception.

Wouldn't a proportionate response be to speak to the owner? Surely no one would start legal action without taking some normal steps and using their words?

BreadInCaptivity · 14/08/2025 19:53

Just log on to Airbnb and you’ll find the option to contact your host based on your booking.

No joy from the host then you have the option to complain to Airbnb.

Take pictures.

BlankBlankBlank14 · 14/08/2025 19:56

Yes definitely complain!!

jazzhands84 · 14/08/2025 20:11

I'm a host and your first point of call is to contact them and expect a swift reply. Know what you'd like the outcome to be whether that's to move with a refund for unused nights (in which case leave and book something else today or tomorrow), or a deep clean. If you're good with a deep clean, you should expect a partial refund on any nights you stay. 50% would not be unreasonable. If you leave, a full refund on unsed nights. Leave a review appropriate to the host's response.

Thank you for this. I'd just like the place to feel be and feel clean.

This happened to us, we didn't stay to be honest. Even bed linen didn't look clean amd freshly put on. The photos on the site were lovely too 🤢 Took photos of the filth and messaged the hosts stating we wouldn't be staying and booked into the nearest hotel.

The hosts never responded so we messaged Airbnb and they gave us a full refund.

Honestly cannot believe people would consider letting something out that hasn't and isn't being looked after.

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 14/08/2025 20:52

We don't have enough spare to move unfortunately. Was so looking forward to this break. Wheelz46 Honestly cannot believe people would consider letting something out that hasn't and isn't being looked after I know! What are they actually thinking?

Complain directly to Airbnb.
Incredibly outing but we arrived at our Airbnb and there was an actual murder scene right outside the front door.
Paramedics were still working on the poor victim.
We walked away and had a drink at a local cafe and went back after a couple of hours where I had to use my basic GCSE french to discuss with a police officer if we could gain access!

We didn’t complain to anyone but my DH put something on twitter, mentioning what had happened and within 10 mins Airbnb had reached out to us offering alternative accommodation that would be available immediately.
