Dirty AirBnB-gutted

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 14/08/2025 19:02

Booked an Airbnb, looked fine in photos, nothing spectacular but fine. It's so grimy,
Stained cups. One cup actually dirty with what looks like hot chocolate.
Cupboards all smell mouldy.
There's an old chopping board in one press and that is actually covered in black mold.
Windows haven't been cleaned on outside.
Grass not cut-weeds in garden.
Floor in living room dirty, you can see footprints.

AIBU to think this is unacceptable?
To add, it wasn't cheap.

Edited to add-there is a broken chair.

It's all conclusive proof that the air bnb system doesn't work. The whole concept of customers being rated for how they leave a place is weird. Trad holiday cottages model is owner employs cleaner or in rare cases does it themselves and cottages operate through an agency. There's a lot of reasons why this works.

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 14/08/2025 22:19

Not many reviews ViolaChomp, pretty new listing.
Rispa42 host saying cleaner didn't make them aware of the issues. And is there anything else I'm not comfortable with.

That’s not acceptable of the host to blame the cleaner - they’re ultimately responsible and looks like they’re trying to put it back on you. Definitely complain to Airbnb! Good luck!

I agree and I think Airbnb will face challenges in growing further cos of these types of issues. I prefer to go to hotels or book directly with cottages / reputable small companies.

Put the remote in a polythene bag don’t touch it - you can still use it in the bag

Use make up wipe and pen top

Message the host with photos now, why are you on here moaning?!

Why are u so rude, she’s clearly venting.

saraclara · 14/08/2025 23:18

We once turned up to an Airbnb that hadn't been cleaned at all. We contacted the owner and Airbnb. The latter got back to us immediately by phone, and a couple of hours later a cleaner turned up. Airbnb gave us some money to go out and get a meal while the cleaner did their thing. We were pretty happy with that.

Gunz · 14/08/2025 23:26

The problem is that Airbnb is a booking platform and your are very reliant on other guests reviews. 'Back in the Day' when the likes of Hoseasons and Cottages for You used to dominate the scene - they sent out people to inspect the accommodation and gave it grading. Pricing was based around the grading. I have booked quite a few Airbnbs and if there is an issue you are best to raise it with host on the messaging platform. Airbnb are very much a mixed bag - the ones to look for are those that get booked out alot or get repeat bookings. Anything which is new to the platform or few views - proceed with caution.

Putting on tv to put a movie on for DC. The remote is also dirty. Have added picture.

Gross, I don't think I've cleaned our remote in 2+ years and it doesn't look like that 🤢

Right! That is a real lack of care. Damp smell also in presses in bedrooms, have had to put clothes back into suitcases. Have contacted host again about this.

Phone Airbnb directly take tons of photos and get moved out asap. Black mould is a healthy hazard. Do not wait for the host to make excuses. That remote control is disgusting!!! 😯

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/08/2025 09:56

Oh dear, I was hoping the Op was updating to say a cleaner had turned up !
but clearly no further response nor action from the owner :(

Have you actually contacted airb&b yet ?
do not leave it much longer.

How long are you staying? I wouldn't have stayed last night and found a hotel.

I'd be demanding the host sends a cleaner round for a deep clean otherwise demand a full refund.

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 15/08/2025 10:02

I wanted to give host a chance to rectify OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon, will wait to see next response and take it from there to airbnb.

That’s not just dirty. That’s not been cleaned in 10 years. my tv is 4 years old, I don’t remember properly cleaning it and it looks new, I’m sure it’s got germs on it, but it doesn’t look filthy.

No way the host doesn’t know. That’s not a ‘oh sorry the cleaner forgot to mop this one time but in 20 mins it will look spotless…’ this is a house that is being let with below acceptable standards of cleanliness. A deep clean takes hours and hours, it doesn’t just need a lick like it would if it was just dirty cos someone stayed for a week.

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/08/2025 10:26

That remote has made me feel worried, I’m glad the OP wrapped it. Takes seconds to clean a remote every couple of days with a wipe (in another room!) ditto mice and keyboards, screens etc

Well1mBack · 15/08/2025 10:31

Sorry health hazard not healthy! It's the opposite of healthy, and especially for children.

Well1mBack · 15/08/2025 10:33

Stop trying to get in touch with the owner, the picture of that remote and the black mould and dirty windows means this house hasn't been cleaned in years never mind "missed a clean". Take a ton of pictures, email them to Airbnb and phone them directly. Ask for a refund and to be moved to somewhere safe for you and your child.

rookiemere · 15/08/2025 10:42

You arrived yesterday OP and contacted yesterday, I would escalate to Airbnb now. The longer you leave it, the less compensation you are likely to get as you will be deemed to have accepted the accommodation. I would have contacted them last night, before you spent a night in the property, but what’s done is done. The time to be nice to the owner is well past.

BeaLola · 15/08/2025 11:07

I wouldn't stay - hound AirbNB direct with photos , I would also take video footage of grime etc and upload - AirBNb should find you somewhere else immediately as this is a health hazard

I don't think I've ever seen such a dirty remote

DrapeyDreamer · 15/08/2025 11:35

I would contact Airbnb asap. It's clear the host isn't interested in rectifying the issue and the longer you leave it to contact Airbnb, the less likely you are to get a decent resolution / refund. I'm assuming all your interaction with the host is via messaging through the app so hopefully Airbnb can see that!

DirtyBird · 15/08/2025 11:49

I don’t care about it being fancy or posh but cleanliness is very important to me. I can’t relax in a dirty space. I would definitely complain about it.

landlordhell · 15/08/2025 12:07

The host I had beef with started off helpful and apologetic but quickly switched to mean and accusatory when I didn’t buy her apology. Go straight to air bnb support and salivate the rest of your holiday. The longer you stay the less you will get.
