Dirty AirBnB-gutted

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 14/08/2025 19:02

Booked an Airbnb, looked fine in photos, nothing spectacular but fine. It's so grimy,
Stained cups. One cup actually dirty with what looks like hot chocolate.
Cupboards all smell mouldy.
There's an old chopping board in one press and that is actually covered in black mold.
Windows haven't been cleaned on outside.
Grass not cut-weeds in garden.
Floor in living room dirty, you can see footprints.

AIBU to think this is unacceptable?
To add, it wasn't cheap.

Edited to add-there is a broken chair.

I hired at a cottage in Wales last year in arrival there was a strange smell which tickle my throat, the whole place was covered in black mould. I demanded my money back and a night in a hotel. They complied immediately

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 15/08/2025 17:11

Exactly the same.

Been no reply since my msg this morning.

Forget the host now. Please contact Airbnb directly if you haven’t done so already.

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/08/2025 19:08

@DontStopMeNowGoodTime how appalling of them, such scammers . I’m sorry this has blighted the start of your hols and I hope you get a refund. Best of luck

Inshockandsome · 15/08/2025 19:17

Quite frankly air bnb have much to answer for and I am amazed they are not be sued en masse for misleading advertising. The number of really shit houses that they are flogging with images that bear no resemblance at all. There is no quality control whatsoever.

Air bnb are the biggest cowboys out there…

If it is in the UK, I think you should look to claim via the small claims court. I think this verges on the crime of obtaining money by deception.

Well thats a hell of an over reaction

OP has done the right thing contacting the host and escalating to AirBnB

Youll be suggesting its logged with 101 next

CalzoneOnLegs · 15/08/2025 19:32

@CallMeFlo yes it is, you can’t make a claim through the small claims court until you have exhausted every other option anyway, it may have to happen further down the line but hopefully not

Well she has been missold - it has been hugely misleading there is legislation that protects customers.

CanOfMangoTango · 15/08/2025 20:27

That remote is absolutely disgusting.

I hope you get a good resolution from AirBnB.

And going via Airbnb is the correct approach to try for resolution. Its certainly not obtaining money by deception at this stage

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 15/08/2025 21:51

Thanks all. Yes got resolution from AirBnB, they were really helpful. I never complain about anything but thankfully I'm starting to get to the no fucks left to give (thanks peri!)
Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice and especially hearing from airbnb hosts themselves. Big lesson learned with this experience.

It worked wonders for us reminding Air bnb of their legal obligations.

Wowzel · 15/08/2025 21:54

I'm being nosy, but how did they resolve it?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 15/08/2025 21:55

I am curious to know if the host replied to airb&b ?

I dont actually see the OP mention it being a phrase or tactic she actually used though 🤔

Seems the matter was resolved without the usual mumsnet over reactions

We had an experience in Bruges once in a big house- house clearly hadn’t been cleaned between parties at all and was normally let to quite big groups , whereas there was only 4 of us including my father in law in his late 60sat the time - it was also in a far far worse state than the photos - we wanted to leave immediately and book into a hotel but my father in law said it was ‘letting people down and we couldn’t just leave’ !!! We didn’t want to ruin it for him and it was a new year break so we just stuck with it and cleaners came in the next day whose we went out - it was still shit though , sometimes even cleaning can’t polish a turd. Airbnb gave us £250 refund from a £900 booking -

Wozel we can't leave the area, we have to be here this weekend so can't actually leave the accommodation. They have given us a very generous refund, not all, obviously as we are still here, but enough to take the sting off it all. And we can use it to eat out as I don't want to use any of the utensils or pots and pans here, we had planned to have breakfast/and some dinners here.

Good op.

TenaciousDeeds · 15/08/2025 23:01

You poor thing - that is absolutely unacceptable and IME you can absolutely get some money back!

In 2018 we stayed in a gorgeous property in the south of France. But just after I’d paid we got a message saying she had a cat that was mostly outside but would need feeding etc. There wasn’t a lot we could do at that point, but this poor cat was elderly and kept defacating and being sick indoors which we had to keep clearing up.

The owner was a war reporter in the Middle East, so miles away, but we reported after the holiday and got a 50% refund. Good luck!
