Dirty AirBnB-gutted

Booked an Airbnb, looked fine in photos, nothing spectacular but fine. It's so grimy,
Stained cups. One cup actually dirty with what looks like hot chocolate.
Cupboards all smell mouldy.
There's an old chopping board in one press and that is actually covered in black mold.
Windows haven't been cleaned on outside.
Grass not cut-weeds in garden.
Floor in living room dirty, you can see footprints.

AIBU to think this is unacceptable?
To add, it wasn't cheap.

Edited to add-there is a broken chair.

What are the reviews like? If it's as bad as you say it can't have happened in a short amount of time.
Absolutely take photos with time stamps

email, message, ring if you must but get complaining

If it is in the UK, I think you should look to claim via the small claims court. I think this verges on the crime of obtaining money by deception.

This all sounds a bit OTT: contact the host first and point this out and if not satisfied with this contact Airbnb. No need for the histrionics.

Putting on tv to put a movie on for DC. The remote is also dirty. Have added picture.

Yuk. That is minging.

Inshockandsome · 14/08/2025 21:26

I called Air BnB on their emergency line when this happened to us. We sent the photos by email (they will supply the email address) and I refused to stay on the basis it wasn’t safe (black mould is not considered safe for example)
We were given a full refund.
I understand unless you move out, there are less likely to refund. I would encourage you to leave.

HerecomesMargo · 14/08/2025 21:28

I’ve only done it once and never, ever again. The most grim part is using the appliances and kitchen stuff 🤢Hotel all the way.

Inshockandsome · 14/08/2025 21:28

I wouldn’t wait for a host reply. Escalate straight away with air bnb. I would encourage you to tell them you have dc and it’s a health hazard.

Conversensational · 14/08/2025 21:31

I have a colleague who runs an airb&b and he said he only puts the sheets on a 20 degree quick wash for 15 mins between stays. That was enough for me NEVER to choose to stay in one.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 14/08/2025 21:32

I would be contacting AirB&B now

you say you can't afford to book somewhere else but
let them do that for you
what they can do is refund your money as a credit to your account, they and you find somewhere else, then you pay for that new place using your credit.

Airb&b sorted a situation for me, they suggested places I looked at them, I suggested some they knew if the hosts were easily contactable or not and after a bit of tooing and frooing I was sorted.

That is grim, get as many photos as possible

HelloGreen · 14/08/2025 21:37

Did you send photos? Include the remote one.

Itiswhysofew · 14/08/2025 21:39

That's just dreadful.

I've been a host and would never, ever let my properties in that state. Absolutely shocking. You must complain.

Did you check their reviews prior to your booking it?

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 14/08/2025 21:41

Itiswhysofew it's a pretty new listing! Only a couple months.

That’s a health hazard I’m speechless, so sorry OP

CalzoneOnLegs · 14/08/2025 21:57

Put the remote in a polythene bag don’t touch it - you can still use it in the bag

Rispa42 · 14/08/2025 22:09

Sorry to hear this, what a shame that it’s impacted your holiday. Definitely contact both Airbnb and the host, but make sure you keep all messaging within the app.

I used to love Airbnb but my last few stays were pretty mediocre/ poor for the price stayed, and I’m switching back to hotels!

ViolaChomp · 14/08/2025 22:12

What are the reviews like on the place? They are usually a good gauge for cleanliness

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 14/08/2025 22:19

Not many reviews ViolaChomp, pretty new listing.
Rispa42 host saying cleaner didn't make them aware of the issues. And is there anything else I'm not comfortable with.

Wolfpinkola · 14/08/2025 22:22

Complain directly to Airbnb don’t bother involving the host yet

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 14/08/2025 22:23

CalzoneOnLegs Thank you this is a great idea. Have done now, had packed a roll of sandwich bags in our case.

Contact Airbnb . They will move you.Similar happened to me last year. I went via host and she got a bit funny after initially apologising. I complained on return to Airbnb and they said that because we stayed we could only get 30-40% refund( which we got) but if we had said unacceptable while away they would have moved us to a hotel or other property.

That is totally bogging!

PigletSanders · 14/08/2025 23:04

You need to not be meek about this. That is completely unacceptable.

Send photos, explain clearly and concisely what you expect, and if the hosts fail to rectify it, go to AirBnB directly. Keep all comms on the platform.
