To think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike? Thread 2

Rolling this over as people still seem to have something to say but no new poll.

Original post

AIBU to think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike?

Last year they got more than anyone else in the NHS along with an improved deal. Nurses and other AHPs received lower rises.

BMA have just announced another 'resident' doctor strike continuing to chase pay restoration to 2008 levels.

Having just had the major win with changes to IMG prioritisation and the clamp-down on PAs it feels a bit tone-deaf and I can't see Streeting going for it.

"All medical graduates should have jobs and if they don't succeed it is the fault of consultants (or foreign graduates)"

No one has said this. Ever. Not sure where it's come from ???

Agree with poor quality marking. On one occasion our HT sent a pupil’s script to the Sec of State it was so shocking (Sec of State came back to us saying yes shocking).

Your HT was lucky they weren't fired ! Massive breach of GDPR !

Sevillian · 21/08/2025 22:48

He had my full permission and my DC's. So, wrong yet again. All of us are aware of the procedures. Chill out.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2025 22:50

Doesn't matter. Scripts should not be sent anywhere by anyone. The paper is locked for a year and even the SOS shouldn't see it !

Well earlier on in this thread PurpleFairyLights suggested that every single medical school in the UK should be closed down until her son had a training post and all of the current graduates of UK medical schools did too, however weak they were and however much harm they might cause any future patients. So there are certainly some quite radical views being aired here.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2025 22:53

Again, none of this was ever said. Please read text carefully, it saves silly mistakes being made.

Well the then Sec of State was just fine with it and took appropriate action. No-one died and no-one got fired or reprimanded other than the two examiners in question. For heaven's sake calm down.

PurpleFairyLights said exactly that. You read back; I don't need to.

'The Resident Market Labour Test needs to come back quickly before Oriel opens again in January 2026.
We need to go back to pre January 2021 where UK medical graduates took priority for specialty training as now the backlog caused by a few years of IMGs applying on an equal footing has caused UKMG under or unemployment.
Or government should make sure the backlog of UK medical graduates is cleared by giving them jobs and at the same time close down all UK medical schools and just recruit doctors trained abroad.
There is no point having this hybrid system where 63% of applicants to specialty training in 2025 were IMGs. It is not a level playing field now as most IMGs will have been doctors far longer than the F2s applying to a points based system that favours experience. Specialty training posts system is for doctors with 2 years experience.'

You know that is rubbish. Please give date and time I said that.

Or are you referring to a devil's advocate post a while back saying the hybrid system of IMGs and UK grads competing for the same jobs resulting in 2025 63% of applications came from IMGs?

I said it did not work and maybe they should close down UK medical schools. I was not serious. The Resident Labour Market Test needs to be introduced straight away.

Oh dear you're a bit slow PurpleFairyLights. I've just copied your post. 9th Aug at 19.38.

If you weren't serious why did you post it? It's hardly humorous. Of course you were serious. It's just that now you realise how absurd it sounds.

Oh dear that was a joke about closing down the medical schools but we are going in that direction. Who wants to go to medical school in the UK and have 100k in debt and 50% chance of unemployment?

I sent lots of MPs an email about this situation a while back and today had a fantastic reply from someone significant in present government.

It is called dark humour. Not slow but waa typing a reply when you posted. Sorry to break it to you but I don't hang on to your every word.

Sevillian · 21/08/2025 23:16

Of course you weren't joking PurpleFairyLights; that's absolutely evident from the post itself.

Dark humour and devil's advocate post. You come across as devoid of humour so you don't need to be embarrassed I understand.

mumsneedwine · 21/08/2025 23:20

@PurpleFairyLights reading comprehension is not great on here unfortunately. And we have a HT breaking such a fundamental rule I'm v surprised they are still working. Any school releasing papers before lockdown ends will have their right to administer exams taken away. V strange behaviour.

I think it might be a tall tale but then there are some really strange posters on here.

Don't be such a twerp mumsneedwine. I had a copy of the script and it was such a shocking error in marking that my DS and I were completely happy for the HT to pass the script on to the Sec of State. Maybe you don't deal at that level yourself. It's important to flag these things up.

I think leave it. You clearly don't understand how things like this work and why it's important to flag these things up at a high level. The incident was shockingly remiss and poor marking was being discussed all over the media at the time. It was rewarding to help illustrate the issue. An entire section wasn't marked and wasn't marked again on appeal. The marker on appeal hadn't bothered to read the script at all. The paper went up to an A*, quite rightly, and we got a fulsome apology from the head of the exam board in question.

Sevillian · 21/08/2025 23:38

mumsneedwine my reading comprehension couldn't be improved.

PurpleFairyLights is embarrassed that she proposed that all UK medical schools should be closed to allow the current unemployed graduates to get a job and she now realises how utterly ludicrous that suggestion is.

'Dark humour' my Aunt Fanny.

And now I must help with the washing up.

"Unemployed, UK trained staff, is madness."

"Jobs are there."

"Over supply of doctors is only because we employ so many IMGs."

"If you think some medical schools/graduates are sub standard ? Have you tried to effect change or just moaned about things ? It's not the students fault!"
