To think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike? Thread 2

Rolling this over as people still seem to have something to say but no new poll.

Original post

AIBU to think the BMA have misjudged with another doctor's strike?

Last year they got more than anyone else in the NHS along with an improved deal. Nurses and other AHPs received lower rises.

BMA have just announced another 'resident' doctor strike continuing to chase pay restoration to 2008 levels.

Having just had the major win with changes to IMG prioritisation and the clamp-down on PAs it feels a bit tone-deaf and I can't see Streeting going for it.

"Unemployed, UK trained staff, is madness."

"Jobs are there."

"Over supply of doctors is only because we employ so many IMGs."

"If you think some medical schools/graduates are sub standard ? Have you tried to effect change or just moaned about things ? It's not the students fault!"

Strange you think having over 50% of jobs going to IMGs isn't madness (75% in some areas). Thankfully Wes and pretty much every other consultant thinks it's wrong and things are changing already. Most new jobs requiring 2 years NHS experience. Great isn't it ?

And why haven't you done something about all these medical schools you think are sub standard ? Why are you not trying to make change if you think the doctors aren't v good ? Have no idea how you extrapolate that to all unis should be closed ??? Especially as I don't agree with it.

Not a clue why quoting these posts is supposed to support any of your rather wild claims ?

Don't be such a twerp mumsneedwine. I had a copy of the script and it was such a shocking error in marking that my DS and I were completely happy for the HT to pass the script on to the Sec of State. Maybe you don't deal at that level yourself. It's important to flag these things up.

You don't seem to understand how big a breach of the JCQ rules this is ! It's not your paper to give permission for, the paper belongs to the exam board. It would be very serious for the school if a locked paper was sent anywhere. You signed a contract to that effect if you as a parent received the script too. A school would lose its exam centre accreditation if it released locked papers early.

Not sure which SOS you sent it to, and how they could comment on marking unless also had the mark scheme and examiners report (which is never sent anywhere).

That 'HT' was not only a twerp. They are a total idiot.

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 08:34

@PurpleFairyLights I wish all these keyboard warriors would actually do the things they moan about.

I'm expecting lots of action now to try and stop new medical schools (set up deliberately in low income, low employment areas) as they don't think they are any good. And a campaign to improve (or close) the ones not deemed worthy of them. I hate peopled
who just moan about things but don't try and change them. Put up or shut up.

Me, I'll keep supporting kids to become doctors.

mumsneedwine no-one made the slightest fuss about anything other than the fact that the marking was outrageously slack. I’m not in the least concerned and almost nothing you say, with however emojis you use, could persuade me to be otherwise. Particular members of the SLT at our school are regularly consulted by the government and that’s been the case for years. In a case such as this, it’s absolutely correct to flag it immediately - indeed we had a duty to do so. The HT in question is now retired but I can assure you he’d be stupendously underwhelmed by your frothing.

Only you and the other strong mothers on this thread are moaning. Other people are supplying you with data etc which you ignore (perhaps because you don’t understand it). But they’re not moaning. They’re just saying plenty of not very suitable UK medical school graduates will ever have a long term UK based medical career. I haven’t read a single post where anyone is exercised by anything other than rudeness, personal attacks and possibly a lack of literacy and poor grammar.

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 08:59

@Sevillian you said they sent the script ? That is not allowed. And any HT/SLT/Teacher/LSA would know this. I assume even the SOS would know it too (although none of the last 10 have had any clue about education so who knows).

It's amazing your state grammar school had many staff regularly consulted by government and I'm v surprised they had the time. Love to know this lofty school full of such education gurus.

Again, you insult and try and demean, when you just can't win the argument. Sad.

Sevillian · 22/08/2025 09:03

I can easily steam roller you on this one as well as so many others. I said particular members of the SLT. And yes absolutely the government would regard those they consult as educational gurus.

You are sounding very parochial on educational matters. As I say, I’m unmoved.

And now my day begins, so I’ll leave you to your outrage.

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 09:03

I'm not moaning about useless medical students or Unis ? I'm moaning about lack of jobs and pay, and I'm very much doing lots about it. Wes and I are now on first name terms in our emails. I've been quite impressed with his ability to listen, rationalise facts and realise change is needed. So what randoms on MN say does not bother me at all.

I keep posting as have had so many messages of support from people too scared to post on here due to the level of the abuse thrown around. So keep going, you keep the thread trending, and we get more readers who now better understand doctor unemployment and conditions of training.

Sevillian · 22/08/2025 09:04

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Have a good day mumsneedwine. Relax if you can.

😂😂 so more than one member of SLT is regularly consulted by government? That is a v strange school. Most SLT are far too busy. If you mean they fill in the surveys and forms we are sent every bloody week, well then we are all regularly consulted. They don't listen though.

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 09:07

@SevillianI'm having a lovely day already. Been at work since 7am and now on a train heading to a WP meeting. Are you coming ?

I’m clearly being guarded about numbers and status mumsneedwine but the sort of consultation I’m talking about is at the full advice in person level. Proper engagement in policy formulation.

And I have every confidence that any moment we’ll hear from you that Wes has invited you to tea so that you can bend his ear some more.

Sure. As I say, have a lovely bank holiday Friday, well known for its large and important conferences. Delegates and their partners absolutely love a bank holiday conference!

Assume you're not invited then ? It's at a lovely hospital and we are here all day. Everyone says hi. We don't tend to invite other halves as that would be weird when working.

Not sure if you're aware but the NHS doesn't really stop for bank holidays.

Funny you should say that ....

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 09:30

And not sure where you read 'conference'. I said meeting. Do you usually invite your other half to work meetings ? How v weird.

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 10:09

Been pointed out to me that's it's not a bank holiday 😂. At least not in the UK.

Sevillian · 22/08/2025 10:20

mumsneedwine how on earth can you be so relentlessly wrong about so many things which are pure fact?

Only in Scotland is it not a bank holiday weekend. In the rest of the UK it is. Today is the early get away day.

stuffedpeppers · 22/08/2025 10:40

I did not say substandard - those are your words.

Yes some residents do not meet the postgraduate standards - simple bell curve analysis says that will happen

What am I doing teaching everyone equally regardless of their back ground, perceived disadvantages. Everyone deserves the same opportunities when being taught.
I find your decision to only request re marks for those you consider worthy (WP) so discriminatory it is sad. The least represented population in UK medical schools currently is white lower/lower middle class males - a group where it may not always be clear theya re at a disadvantage.

This is bizarre, even by the high bar that you usually set yourself.

You said "no one said this. Ever. Not sure where it's come from": "All medical graduates should have jobs and if they don't succeed it is the fault of consultants (or foreign graduates)"

I pointed out that you said it:

"Unemployed, UK trained staff, is madness."
"Jobs are there."
"Over supply of doctors is only because we employ so many IMGs."
"If you think some medical schools/graduates are sub standard ? Have you tried to effect change or just moaned about things ? It's not the students fault!"

If those four quotations do not mean that you believe it is madness for UK medical graduates to be without jobs, or without foreign graduates there would be enough jobs for all of them, or if the output of medical schools is substandard it is amenable to change, short of improving the standard of the intake - then what do they mean?

And where on earth do you get that nonsense about extrapolating that "all unis should be closed" and my views on an appropriate percentage of foreign graduates?

PurpleFairyLights · 22/08/2025 12:24

Sevillian · 21/08/2025 23:16

Of course you weren't joking PurpleFairyLights; that's absolutely evident from the post itself.

You don't know me so you have no idea of my sense of humour.

stuffedpeppers · 22/08/2025 12:26

"'m expecting lots of action now to try and stop new medical schools (set up deliberately in low income, low employment areas) as they don't think they are any good. And a campaign to improve (or close) the ones not deemed worthy of them."

Where has anyone said any of that?
An acknowledgement that standards differ around the country - absolutely and not all medical schools are equal - fact anyone with a basic understanding of statistics knows that has to be the case.

We better shut down the low income, high social deprivation areas which have well establsihed medical schools in and make way for ones that mums approves of - bang goes the Royal London, Manchester, King's, St Marys, Leicester, Newcastle, Liverpool, UCL and Glasgow - all in the top 30 most deprived areas of the country but all have a medical school!

PurpleFairyLights · 22/08/2025 12:27

Sevillian · 21/08/2025 23:32

I think leave it. You clearly don't understand how things like this work and why it's important to flag these things up at a high level. The incident was shockingly remiss and poor marking was being discussed all over the media at the time. It was rewarding to help illustrate the issue. An entire section wasn't marked and wasn't marked again on appeal. The marker on appeal hadn't bothered to read the script at all. The paper went up to an A*, quite rightly, and we got a fulsome apology from the head of the exam board in question.

Edited

Why would I know anything about it? My DS got 4 A levels with an A* grade thankfully without needing a remark.

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 12:30

@PurpleFairyLights Mike drop. Love it !!!

mumsneedwine · 22/08/2025 12:34

@stuffedpeppers I hate people moaning about something they think is wrong and then doing nothing about it. Not you. But several others have demeaned doctors who did not go to one of their preferred Unis. If they produce such useless graduates why wouldn't a consultant flag this and try and just change things ? Patient safety should be paramount and if they really believe certain Med Schools are not up to standard then do something.

Not heard anything anyone is doing to effect change ?
