When ‘tradition’ becomes a clear display of hatred

Am I being unreasonable to be aghast at the bonfires in NI? Burning the tri-colour as well as an effigy of a migrant boat. How can this be referred to as ‘tradition’??

Firefighters take two hours to extinguish controversial bonfire topped with ‘migrant boat’ and Irish flag in Co Tyrone

Firefighters took almost two hours to extinguish a controversial bonfire which was lit in Co Tyrone last night.

It’s unconscionable. But the “glorious twelfth” has always been a disgusting orgy of hatred and intimidation. It should have been banned decades ago.

lazyarse123 · 11/07/2025 14:56

It's so wrong. I actually think it's incitement to violence against migrants and I put that on FB, I was laughed at and told how wrong I was and they were effigy not real people, but I know how some morons in this country think and would take it as an instruction.
I think we do absolutely have too many migrants bit this is not the way to stop it,
Plus if they are complaining about migrants costing money, how much do they think it cost to put it out plus taking firefighters away from other incidents.

MixedMetals · 11/07/2025 14:58

It's disgusting. There should be no room for those 'traditions' in 2025.

WhereIsMyJumper · 11/07/2025 14:59

Agreed.
I know the culture is very different in NI - having been through west Belfast and witnessed the very ostentatious display from both nationalists and loyalists - I know it’s hard to compare with the rest of the UK where overt political displays such as these aren’t commonplace… however, burning an actual effigy of migrants on boats feels way too far. I agree it’s a problem, but this is so inflammatory (pun not intended)

In fairness, the Glorious Twelfth is the 12th of August when the grouse shooting starts.

July 12th is The Battle of the Boyne or Orangeman’s Day.

But yes, it’s completely horrible seeing hatred whipped up to a frenzy.

My NI family and friends have always referred to July 12 as the glorious twelfth 🤷🏻‍♀️

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/07/2025 15:08

YANBU it's a horrible display.

ConstitutionHill · 11/07/2025 15:13

Disgusting, open display of sectarian hatred and only a few weeks after the appalling scenes in Ballymena. Not going to stop the bowler hatted ones though.

They may have, but it isn’t.

It’s conflating the Glorious Revolution that brought William of Orange to the Throne and the 12th of July Battle with an entirely different event, the Glorious Twelfth of August when the posh people’s annual grouse murder resumes.

It’s easy to see how they got mixed up, but there you go.

WaitedBlankey · 11/07/2025 15:29

(I had a history A-level teacher from Belfast who used to get VERY pissed off when we mixed up which Twelfth was the Glorious one, so I had it drummed into me. Google agrees)

Agree. I’ve always tried to get my head around why the marches/bonfires are allowed to go ahead each year!

They get such little coverage here usually, I think it's good there is more awareness.

Yes, but some people are saying that sarcastically.

It's not that long ago that they were blowing each other limb from limb - women, children and anyone else in between included. It's really not that surprising.

WhereIsMyJumper · 11/07/2025 16:41

I hope this incident gets investigated properly. It’s one thing to imprison people for posting things on Facebook but to me, this is a whole other level!

It’s awful. I saw photos from last night when it was lit and there’s kids and families there. What are they thinking. Sickening.

hattie43 · 11/07/2025 16:47

some traditions are hideous , bull fighting etc but if it’s not illegal not much can be done . As unpalatable as this is it’s just people sitting in a boat , no signs or speech promoting violence.

blacksax · 11/07/2025 16:54

Anyone lighting bonfires during a tinder-dry heatwave has to be a fucking nutter.

ChocolateGanache · 11/07/2025 16:57

Racist fuckers.

Tutorpuzzle · 11/07/2025 17:15

Utterly abhorrent and just an excuse for attention seeking yobbo antics. If the marches are banned, though, oh, what martyrs they’ll become.

I honestly think the best thing to do is laugh uproariously at the ridiculousness of these marchers and their flutes. I recommend having half a Guinness and settling down with the ‘marching’ episode of Derry Girls, which is just joyful and total genius.

(But I do agree that effigies of migrants, or anyone, really, is something that should be clamped down on.)

How is that not fair? I’ve said most people there are lovely and sick of the shite?? There is still an ongoing tradition that is backwards and clearly used by racists I.e loads of people who are thick!

The clip of a model Grenfell Tower burning on a bonfire was made at a party a year after the disaster.
