surely at £4 a pop they should be coffee grounds or beans used to make an iced coffee?

So is Starbucks - I used to work in one. Is the cold brew that they use. It's not instant like the one from Tesco but yes still granules, It's pre made every morning :)

CuarloDeFonza · 11/06/2025 16:38

When I see people ponsing around and posing with a Costa or a Starbucks coffee cup like some fashion accessory I feel an eternal rage of hate towards them..Who do you think you are, it's only a coffee cup not a Prada bag. You're nothing special.....calm yourself

Skandar · 11/06/2025 16:42

I watched them make me a Frappe at the weekend in our local Costa and they definitely used a shot of espresso from the machine, not instant.

BashfulClam · 11/06/2025 16:43

Ah see decaf is rubbish anyway. I don’t drink it for the taste I want to feel awake! I do have ADHD and a caffeine addiction though.

Or they are just drinking their costa/starbucks and getting on with their life. I think you need to calm yourself.

Why float around with a cold coffee pretending to be cool. Weirdos. I see you 😉

HobnobsChoice · 11/06/2025 16:55

A true Greek frappé is made with an type instant coffee as is Dalgona coffee. It doesn't whip the same way if you use brewed coffee

But it’s for the gram ;)

Itsnearlyxmas · 11/06/2025 16:56

My daughter used to work for Costa and says this absolutely is no true. Instant coffee is not used, just ground up beans.

Where did you hear or experience them using instanf coffee as opposed to beans, OP?

ItsCalledAConversation · 11/06/2025 17:04

YABU for going to Costa, their coffee is made from inferior quality beans and tastes like burnt shite.

Roundaboot · 11/06/2025 17:07

GoBackToTheStart · 11/06/2025 16:20

This one? It’s basically just a dalgona coffee isn’t it? They went viral online over lockdown on social media. You whip instant coffee, sugar, and a tiny amount of water (just enough to dissolve the solids and no more…hence using instant and not brewed) to get that fluffy consistency, then you spoon the coffee mix onto the milk. It’s impossible to make it in another way because brewed coffee has far too much water and doesn’t whip the way it needs to for the drink.

I had one recently and it defo did not look like that! Mine was more like an iced latte with a layer of syrup at the bottom, not all lovely and frothy on top. I didn't see how it was made but now I wonder if they used brewed coffee rather than instant?
It was nice enough, but I agree with a PP, it didn't really taste like lavender.

MusedeBordeaux · 11/06/2025 17:08

It's about the consistency.

A frappe is created using granules, sugar and a little water. It is then whipped up to a thick frothy texture with milk, water or whatever desired flavour added, alongside ice. This type of iced coffee is more like a creamy milkshake in texture.

A freddo is a cold blend and made from espresso and ice. Whipped milk can be added on top to make a cappuccino freddo.

My kids love an iced vanilla latte, I have seen dozens being made over the years and they are not made with instant coffee.

Why do you think they are?

LuvACustardCream · 11/06/2025 17:13

Don't think 'coffee' and 'Costa' or 'Starbucks' should be used in the same sentence tbh

Iiquidsnake · 11/06/2025 17:17

Absolutely agree — £4 for instant coffee is daylight robbery. At that price, I want beans ground by hand and iced with the tears of overworked baristas. Instant coffee belongs in a staff kitchen, not in my overpriced cup. Honestly, only a man could have signed off on that idea — probably the same one who thinks “just get a jar from Tesco” is gourmet.

MintChocCat · 11/06/2025 16:35

I’d also like to know the answer to this!

I blend a shot of coffee (instant cause my machine broke lol) with ice, but I add some syrup to the hot shot first to dissolve it. Then I put ice in a cup, add the blended mix and milk and stir. IDK if that's the best way but it's how I do it 🙂

Itsjustmonkeyssingingsongsmate · 11/06/2025 17:22

Do you like it? Enough to pay £4 for it? If so go ahead and treat yourself. If not don't buy one 🤷‍♀️ Don't blame a business for selling you something safe that you're prepared to pay for.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 11/06/2025 17:24

I get decaf and they use a sachet of what I assume is ground coffee that they run through their machine. I’ve had all sorts of iced stuff too and they always use the same.

I don't think the ones with a Costa cup (or a Starbucks cup.) are the ones who need to calm themselves! 😂

OP, @MikeRafone I don't drink the iced coffee drinks so I don't care, but I don't think there's anything wrong with them using instant coffee for them. JMO.

MalcolmMoo · 11/06/2025 17:34

I got one today, watched them make it. They made a shot just like with the hot coffee and added cold
milk and ice. I’m not sure this is true at least not at my Costa.

That's an awfully strong feeling about somebody's choice of beverage.... how do you function with so much internalised rage? Do you need to speak to a therapist?

Jeez @CuarloDeFonza who pissed on your cornflakes? (Or in your coffee!)

If you see me "poncing" around with a Starbucks coffee cup it's because I want to drink a Starbucks coffee, not because I need a fashion accessory 🙄

They have been for well over a year, this isn’t a new thing
