Question about lethal injection

Leafy3 · 22/05/2025 11:09

Grim subject, I know, but why is it seemingly so hard for prisons in the states to get it right? It's clearly an unpleasant way to go...Why don't they put the person under a general anaesthetic first?

We euthanise animals quickly & painlessly, why don't they (can't they?) use the same drugs on humans?

I put the figures above. Since 1992, 20 innocent people have been executed, with 200 people found to be innocent after death sentence but before it was carried out. That's a high number.

But if it saves one child ?

CruCru · 22/05/2025 17:38

Honestly? I wonder why the US doesn’t use the guillotine. Yes it’s messy but I expect any execution chamber has to be hosed down afterwards, regardless of the method.

Wow

I take it the implied smiley was too implied ?

That's how the country was born through murder, rape and slavery. They have a lot of unlearning to do.

Why do people care? I certainly would not be giving any thought to these monsters. I feel for the victims. I hope they die a slow and painful death. People that write threads like this just remind me of them stupid women who fall in love with Ted Bundy and other killers.

CurlewKate · 22/05/2025 17:42

Sorry-I proper screwed up there. But it’s Ian Hislop putting an irrefutable anti death penalty argument to Priti Patel on Question Tine….

It's interesting that so many posters have said that state sanctioned murder is abhorrent. How many of you would vote in favour of the Assisted Dying Bill? In the UK, doctors can withdraw or withhold life support, including turning off life support machines, without family consent. Isn't that state sanctioned murder? How many posters thought Archie Batterbee's mother was right to have wanted the life support to remain?

For the avoidance of doubt, I am not a fan of the death penalty, but I would vote in favour of the Assisted Dying Bill, and I don't know enough about medical science to know if it was correct or not to turn off Archie Battersbee's life support (but I did feel terribly sorry for his parents). I am linking all these factors to show that deciding life and death is a tricky business. It's very difficult to be adamantly for or against state sanctioned murder, in every situation.

Archie Battersea was dead, I seem to recall there was necrosis of the brain stem? The life support was maintaining an illusion of life where there was none.

Nowhere near the same thing. And neither is withdrawing treatment in less clear cut cases or only providing palliative care.

What about prisonerswere given the lethal injection and were later found innocent don't those people matter?

What makes me laugh is that Americans love to preach the bible and yet they don't follow it. They don't want women to have abortions but they will happily kill an innocent man because they want to rush it through. People are not born evil they are sick and need heavy doses of mental health treatment for the rest of their lives.

This thread brings me back to when I studied criminal justice.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 22/05/2025 17:52

how would they recruit people to ‘do’ the actual job of murdering the prisoners?

ExpressCheckout · 22/05/2025 17:53

Who carries out the most executions? China, Iran, Saudi, United States and Somalia. I think this tells you everything you'd want to know.

I’m not talking about innocent people here.

So people who do evil things are just sick and need mental health treatment… okay. I’m going to go now.

Personally I don't support either - the first because I don't believe the state should ever take a life and the second because I wouldn't trust it not to be abused

The obvious answer of course is a return to a life sentence meaning exactly that, and preferably for parole to be discontinued
Of course it would mean a massive expansion in the building of prisons, but that's not insurmountable if the will's there

Plenty of people would volunteer. Maybe even someone on this thread.

Doesn't really take much brains does it ?

In fairness, Japan also has the death penalty (and uses it).

Damn right, why would I care. You get all sorts of weird, disturbed people who obsess over killers. I am not one of them.

Yes, you're correct. I was just listing the top five.

Is that honesty or confusion ?

Yeah right….so blasé!

have you ever been in a prison? You’ll spend the night in the executioners cell…

Neither am I, but I do work with them.

they have families to also consider. Lots of these people also have learning difficulties,SEN. And yes, some will be innocent.

someone's mum is executed then how will that child then navigate a normal childhood into adulthood? How will that child fare in life?
