Is it safe to order if I can get an order to go through?

Am I “just” looking at a long indeterminate delay? Or could I lose money and have to chase for a refund?

Is it safe to order with my credit card? Should I use PayPal? Credit card via PayPal?

Should I be deleting all my saved payment details from the site/app?

I would serve them altogether, but there’s a really pretty dress….

SWERVE. Bloody autocorrect.

They've paused orders so I don't think you'll get very far.

HermioneWeasley · 02/05/2025 15:35

They’re not taking online orders

ScrewedByFunding · 02/05/2025 15:35

They aren't taking online orders at all.

EleanorReally · 02/05/2025 15:35

do they know the culprits?

sesquipedalian · 02/05/2025 15:35

At the moment, they have still paused online orders, so nothing will go through, and if it does, you are highly unlikely to receive your order. I’d wait until they say it’s OK to order online again.

CamillaMacauley · 02/05/2025 15:36

Some security expert said online yesterday to change your password and delete your stored cards from the M&S website. I think the horse has bolted as far as any stored card details are concerned, if they’ve had access to that then they’ve had access.

soupforbrains · 02/05/2025 15:36

From what I have read this isnt a data mining cyber breach. I.e. not the theft of personal or financial data. But more of just a malicious attack on their systems designed to essential just ruin all their software and hardware. To try to contain the attack (which sounds like a Trojan horse virus) they’ve voluntarily taken several of their systems offline in order to prevent the virus spreading. Like quarantine.

ultimately if the online system is working you can order. But their stock management and logistics systems were also taken offline so how long it could take for you to get your order woukd be anyone’s guess.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 02/05/2025 15:36

Oh bugger.

Something about a spider @EleanorReally- all too techy for me, hence me asking for the idiots guide.

Thanks anyway, everyone.

Okay, got it. So less worrying on the payment card front, anyway, then?

Oh. Hmm. I might just leave my PayPal on there and wipe the rest. I think PayPal only in future is the most relaxing way to do all online shopping. I don’t really understand the complicated stuff so I might as well shop like this eBay 2008.

OP posts:
soupforbrains · 02/05/2025 15:42

I don’t think there’s any particular risk but I’d basically always recommend using only PayPal wherever you can. (I don’t work for Paypal 🤣)

mrschocolatte · 02/05/2025 15:43

I feel your pain. There is a very pretty dress that I have my eye on too. I wonder how much this has cost M&S in lost revenue? Especially after the hot spell when people might have been trying to get some summer bits?

noworklifebalance · 02/05/2025 15:46

I presume (perhaps stupidly) that if you use Apple Pay the card details won’t be stored on their site?

This is it.

Do I need another dress? No. Are there 30 upstairs? Yes. Some might even be 100% cotton and fit me. But they’re losing some impulse trade for sure. It’s not like it’s 1952 and we all just buy what we need.

Maybe it’s wrong to admit that the hackers are doing any harm, but I’m completely okay with M&S being down as long as they need to be if it helps avoid repeats.

Marianwallace · 02/05/2025 15:49

I’m thoroughly peed off. They can’t do a refund, apparently because I got a sparks discount when purchasing. Now I’m out of the refund period. Which they say they will honour. But in the meantime, I now I have my M&S credit card bill so I have to pay for an item that should’ve been refunded. Apologies I know it misses the point of the thread.

Yes, I agree. I admire the approach they’ve taken to this. Short term pain for longer time gain I hope.

I don’t need another dress but sometimes something new and pretty catches my eye and I imagine myself floating serenely around, bewitching everyone with my magnificence. And then I remember it’s me and will probably drop food/drink other stuff all down it. But I can always dream……

I wonder if my Ocado shop will arrive. They have not sent anything to say there are any issues. This post is the first I knew if any issues

Mine arrived this week on time and no missing items so fingers crossed, yours will be ok.

I do admire them not giving in, apparently many businesses pay the ransoms and we just never hear about it.

Kathbrownlow · 02/05/2025 15:58

Re: Ocado, I read somewhere that they stock from somewhere different, I don't remember the whole story but they are unaffected apparently.

Kathbrownlow · 02/05/2025 15:59

You can still go in a M&S and buy clothing, can't you?
