Can someone explain this M&S situation to me like I’m concussed please?

Is it safe to order if I can get an order to go through?

Am I “just” looking at a long indeterminate delay? Or could I lose money and have to chase for a refund?

Is it safe to order with my credit card? Should I use PayPal? Credit card via PayPal?

Should I be deleting all my saved payment details from the site/app?

Two weeks is unacceptable for any large business. Even small businesses have things sorted within a day or two.

It hasn't occured to you that this is a major situation for them?? They will be working around the clock to fix it, do you seriously think they're just sitting there twiddling their thumbs?

Oh and 'picky bits' is just about the most dreadful phrase on the planet...

As you were....

I made an order the day online orders were paused. It was cancelled and refunded but yesterday I was a victim of fraud. Bank account drained using my card details and only flagged when the money ran out. Likely a coincidence and bad luck but I’d be deleting those stored card details! Although I like M&S, I don’t feel safe to use them yet.

@DollyTots you are not alone,

My M&S Card which I only ever use in M&S was compromised 10 days ago with numerous Amazon transactions being processed. The only place those card details are stored online is in my M&S Account.

To be fair to M&S Bank, the minute I phoned the fraud department my card was stopped and replaced with new Pin etc. They also refunded all the fraudulent transactions.

However, personally I don’t think my experience could have been a coincidence. No one else could have those details. I never use that card with any other retailer, just in store at M&S for my weekly shop and to buy from them online.

I wonder how many other people are experiencing similar issues?

I really feel gutted for M&S that they have experienced this situation and felt particularly sad for all the staff trying to cope with the implications when in store this week, but I do hope my Credit Card experience isn’t the tip of an iceberg yet to be revealed.

I have been keeping an eye on my M&S card, it was on there, deleted now, but the last purchase I bought was with vouchers and before that I used Apple Pay rather than the card. I probably used the card about 6 months ago on M&S before I changed my iMac

Have you tried this (info from M&S website)?:
Items bought online
FAST, FREE, TRACKABLE returns available with our new digital returns process using the AnPost returns portal.
How do I find my returns label?
If you’re returning your order by post, you’ll need to generate a returns label online for through the AnPost returns portal here:
https://www.anpost.com/Post-Parcels/Click-and-Post/Returns
You don’t need a returns label if you’re returning your order to one of our stores. You can use your digital order summary.

Ah thank you. Will have a look at this.

You probably want to keep the stuff though and just want to pay for it somehow, if you return it you will probably never get the items again as this could be ages before it's back to normal. Maybe when it gets back to normal you could ring them up, doing that now might just confuse things.

Yes, I had planned to keep some items and return two. I think you are right, maybe I should wait. I’m a bit worried that if I send them back, they might re-bill me, or reverse the refund once the system is working, if it doesn’t register that they received the items back. It must be total chaos there atm, and a nightmare for staff trying to deal with millions of partially fulfilled orders.

You can still go in a M&S and buy clothing, can't you?

Hah!
Not unless you are prepared to drive at least 10 miles because your local store was closed and replaced with one of the food only branches.

PomegranateVase · 05/05/2025 23:17

I feel sorry for M&S going through this, but it is taking a ridiculously long time to rectify, and this is making me concerned that perhaps even large companies aren’t investing enough time and expertise in cyber protection as they should be.

I’ve had to travel to 3 different M&S stores to find the T-shirts I wanted and eventually I was able to buy them. I’m also trying to buy a pair of jeans and finally found them today - but not in my size!

In the food halls, there are so many empty shelves and fridge spaces, it’s starting to look really terrible. I’m guessing they can’t access their systems to arrange deliveries.

Same thing has happened to co-op, a cyber attack. My DH is a lorry driver for them and they haven’t had work for days. Lots of wages lost due to selfish morons. No doubt Russia or China will be blamed 🙄

Actually not. The M&S ransomware attack is being attributed to "Scattered Spider", a disparate group of British and American teenage hackers. 🙄
Sorry for the impact on your DH. This is the thing that really gets to me - the hackers don't give a damn about all the organisation's employees and the organisation's suppliers' employees just trying to make a living, while they cause mayhem. It's such a shame they don't put their skills to more positive, productive uses.

They are saying in the news that it could be months before M&S is back to normal. They could miss out on the whole summer season which will be devastating for them.

Bet that John Lewis and other retailers are doing well out of it though!

PomegranateVase · 06/05/2025 12:59

@MidnightMeltdown

Oh my goodness, that really is terrible!

I hope they can go back to old fashioned pen and paper and phone calls in this time and get stock transported to where it needs to be - I’d gladly go shopping to a physical store and buy more if they had the products I want in my size.

Sesma · 06/05/2025 13:10

Apparently Next boss is going to be questioned about its preparedness for a cyber attack when it reports its results this week, don't know by who, though. They have all my details as I have a directory account. I have taken my credit card off some retailers websites now.

Snorlaxo · 06/05/2025 14:16

Of course the shareholders at other AGMs will be asking.

I hope that the Co-op drivers and warehouse staff are able to return to work quickly.

DS has grown out of his 15-16 size schools trousers and M&S seems to be one of the few places that do school uniform in sizes above that. Not to mention that most other shops seem to think we only need to buy uniform at the start of the school year!

I went into our local branch and stocks were prettty low as they have’s been able to restock since the systems went down and we can’t order online.

Luckily, my DS isn’t image conscious yet as I released the extra hem on his 15-16 M&S trousers but they still come up short! 😂

I will be extra grateful once they get back on their feet.

I just bought some age 17 ones from Next.

CleaningSilverCandlesticks · 09/05/2025 19:57

I had left a few things in an M&S basket from just after their system went down, hoping it would just be a couple of days. I notice they emptied it today.

Viviennemary · 10/05/2025 08:22

They shouldn't have closed the smaller shops that sold clothes. Thd follies of computers once again. They are convenient but we rely far far too heavily on them. And total chaos when something like this happens.
