Is it safe to order if I can get an order to go through?

Am I “just” looking at a long indeterminate delay? Or could I lose money and have to chase for a refund?

Is it safe to order with my credit card? Should I use PayPal? Credit card via PayPal?

Should I be deleting all my saved payment details from the site/app?

You can still go in a M&S and buy clothing, can't you?

I can’t in this case but I’m going to go and show some support in the homeware, beauty and food hall sections this weekend.

do they know the culprits?

Yes, according to The Times (and other reputable media outlets) they do. It's a hacking group called Scattered Spiders. Just do a quick UK news search.

Unusually, they are made up of apparently UK and USA teenagers and young adults (most hackers are usually Russian or Chinese).

Yes, UK or USA teenagers.

I sincerely hope the UK security services are on to them, and that when they are caught and charged they get lifetime phone/laptop and internet bans.

Assuming you have an M&S store to go to. They closed ours 3 years ago, and there is no way I’m trekking 15 miles to go to my nearest one.

I presume (perhaps stupidly) that if you use Apple Pay the card details won’t be stored on their site?

Yes Apple Pay just stores the details on your phone, no card details will be saved on a website unless you ask them to.

Even then no website actually stores your card details. The payment provider saves them and gives the website a sort of key and it’s not possible for someone else to use that key if that makes sense.

As stated upthread it’s too late now anyway, any possible hacking and stealing of your details will have already been done.

milveycrohn · 02/05/2025 16:20

There's a msg on the website saying they have paused on-line orders, so no, you cannot order anything on line.
You can, however, browse, etc but whether you would want to, regarding possible security, is not for me to say.

And they say today’s young people have no skills !

When TalkTalk was hacked 10 years ago, the hackers discovered that they stored customer financial data without encryption and that info was sold onto other criminals.

I feel your pain. There is a very pretty dress that I have my eye on too. I wonder how much this has cost M&S in lost revenue? Especially after the hot spell when people might have been trying to get some summer bits?

Yep, that's me. I've had my eye on an item. Ordered it on 23 April and then received an email a few days after saying my item was 'out of stock' and I was refunded. I'm a tad annoyed they couldn't honour existing orders, but what can you do?

I feel for them, sounds like a bad attack.

And they say today’s young people have no skills !

Sadly, they use those skills maliciously instead of doing anything good or productive.

😂You must do, this started a week ago!

Yes, I was joking!

Blinkingbother · 02/05/2025 16:54

I feel desperately bad for them - will prob turn out to be a teenager in a dark room ‘having a bit of fun’…..happened to a company I used to work for.

ArtTheClown · 02/05/2025 16:55

I'd imagine they'll get substantial custodial sentences.

Snorlaxo · 02/05/2025 16:56

Co-op and Harrods were also targetted but it sounds like they thwarted the hackers

CleaningSilverCandlesticks · 02/05/2025 16:57

Is the Harrods attack the same group?

Yes that’s why no one’s allowed to do that anymore, security has got much tighter.

mummytoonetryingfortwo · 02/05/2025 17:03

Very frustrating.

popped into M&S on my lunch break, as I wanted some summer bits for me and my daughter. I also wanted some little picky bits for a cheap dinner and some items to announce my pregnancy. The store was bare and most smaller sizes out of stock. They need to sort it out, ASAP.

zingally · 02/05/2025 17:06

Does anyone know if the M&S Food shops are affected as well? I'd quite like to pop in there tomorrow and get some tasty treat bits for the bank holiday. But if it's all empty shelves, I'll save myself the trip.

Blingismything · 02/05/2025 17:10

There is food stock in my Simply Food but there are a few gaps on the shelves.

Sidebeforeself · 02/05/2025 17:11

Well it depends which store you go into. They will prioritise stock so some places will see a shortage . I went in yesterday are there were definitely some gaps in the food section.

Viviennemary · 02/05/2025 17:12

Just wait till they say they are taking orders again. I expect there will be delays though. I want a few things but I am waiting for the all clear.
