To go to a&e - blood keeps leaking from eye socket.

When I say pouring, I’ll suddenly get a gush from my left eye socket, then it stops. It’s happened three times now. Have no idea what to do. It’s not painful particularly - feels like I’ve scratched the eye or irritated it a bit. But - each time it looks pretty gruesome. Any thoughts? Would a&e be unreasonable?

That can happen if you rupture a blood vessel around your eye. Is the eye itself ok?

cyrkus · 22/04/2025 03:30

Thanks for answering. Yes eye is ok! Slightly sore. It’s freaking me out a bit!

BTW is the cornea and iris look ok, it's usually not serious.

Dontsparethehorses · 22/04/2025 03:31

I think I would go just to check not sign of something serious. If it got worse and you hadn’t gone in you’d kick yourself! (Disclaimer no medical knowledge whatsoever!)

edited to add- sounds like @XWKD has some medical knowledge so maybe ignore me!!

PremiumD · 22/04/2025 03:31

I would go. Don’t risk your eyes.

LadyChillaryTerfington · 22/04/2025 03:31

I guess you could see a GP instead depending on how long it takes to get an appointment where you are?

cyrkus · 22/04/2025 03:31

Just to clarify it’s not one where the whites of my eye have gone red. There’s literally blood pouring down my face.

XWKD · 22/04/2025 03:32

Yes. I only said it's usually not serious because that's what I was told. You need to get it checked out, even if it's likely to be nothing.

It could be just a ruptured blood vessel, but get it checked out just in case.

cyrkus · 22/04/2025 03:36

Yes will do

Find a larger hospital that has an eye casualty department and go there.

XWKD · 22/04/2025 03:38

I get a recurrent haemorrhage between my eyes, and so does my brother. It can happen in the tissue surrounding your eye as well.

cyrkus · 22/04/2025 03:40

Thanks @xwkd. Does blood leak/gush out of your eye socket when that happens?

Christ on a bike. Blood coming out of your eye socket, you wonder if a doctor should check it out and ask the internet via a poll? 😵‍💫

cyrkus · 22/04/2025 03:42

I know @Mumtobabyhavoc it does sound weird and it’s really freaking me out! I’m in London - could pop to moorfields a&e

You're still at home. Jeezus sister. Go now. And for the love of God don't try and down play it at the hospital.
(Please!)

I bleed between the eyes so it's on the outside, but it's not uncommon to bleed from the eye. If you've been coughing or otherwise straining it can happen, or just for no particular reason.

XWKD · 22/04/2025 03:49

Please go to A&E and let us know how you get on. We'll be thinking of you.

Bringbackjaspers · 22/04/2025 03:50

I hope you've got a better A and E than my local. I have been having chest pains and struggling to breathe for two weeks and my local one couldn't give a flying fuck. I watched one woman get kicked out because they didn't think her broken arm from being hit by a car was serious enough to warrant her attendance. I waited 11 hours to be sneered at and told there's nowt wrong with me because "it's not a heart attack, so you're fine". I'm fine. Yippee. Apparently my atrial fibrillation, heart failure and malfunctioning heart valve from a previous heart attack have miraculously disappeared. If it is anything like my local, they won't care if your eyeball drops out and explodes. Although, if it's gross or scary looking, they might keep you waiting round in a triage area for a couple of days in order to scare all the fakers to run away.

Sorry, not really helpful but I'm bitter and pissed off because I have barely eaten and haven't slept properly in days because it hurts me to breathe. I give up trying to get help from the "heroes".

Pollypocket81 · 22/04/2025 04:03

Go straight to Moorfields in a cab. And take a video of your eye bleeding in case the bleeding stops while you are there.

MakeItToTheMoon · 22/04/2025 04:23

Is the blood coming from the tear duct? Any other symptoms of severe pain/ light sensitivity/ blurred vision?

Crazy as it sounds it doesn’t sound like an actual eye emergency and you don’t need to rush to A&E. I would call or pop into Boots or an independant opticians first things and they will do an emergency triage where they will assess the eye and advise you what to do. They can also refer/ advise accordingly. Take photos and give them a detailed history.

An eye emergency would involve pain/ light sensitivity/ double vision/ transient vision etc.

TwinklyNight · 22/04/2025 04:25

Do you have high blood pressure?

Hope you go right away to be checked. Good luck.

cyrkus · 22/04/2025 04:29

God I just don’t know what to do. Wait till morning or just run to Moorfields now. Hate wasting a&e time! It is a bit sore. But none of the emergencies listed above. Thing is blood coming out of eye socket looks gruesome so maybe I am overreacting!

If in doubt call 111. But personally that does sound like and a&e job.

Yikes101 · 22/04/2025 04:40

My ds had this when he was about 6/7, it was linked to nosebleeds. It did freak his teacher out quite a bit. So it may be something similar, definitely would get it checked out though.
