To go to a&e - blood keeps leaking from eye socket.

When I say pouring, I’ll suddenly get a gush from my left eye socket, then it stops. It’s happened three times now. Have no idea what to do. It’s not painful particularly - feels like I’ve scratched the eye or irritated it a bit. But - each time it looks pretty gruesome. Any thoughts? Would a&e be unreasonable?

If blood randomly came out of my eye I would have shot to a&e. There’s be a hole in the wall like an old cartoon. Unless this has happened before and that’s why you’re so chilled, kindly, I’d be questioning why you’re so reluctant to get medical help/non emotive about blood coming out of your eye!?

MyVIsForVendetta · 22/04/2025 08:00

Why is this even a question?!

Sounds like a horror movie!

God I just don’t know what to do. Wait till morning or just run to Moorfields now. Hate wasting a&e time! It is a bit sore. But none of the emergencies listed above. Thing is blood coming out of eye socket looks gruesome so maybe I am overreacting!

For the love of god OP - GO. Yes, you go to A&E. That is exactly what it is there for. If you are in London then Moorfields is even better. You are not a medic. It may well be something small but that’s not for you to decide and blood pouring down your face is a very good reason to visit a hospital. I really hope you are there now. This is exactly what A&E is there for.

Do go to Moorfields fantastic place.

DustyLee123 · 22/04/2025 08:24

I hope you’ve gone by now OP. What did they say?

Starlight7080 · 22/04/2025 08:26

Hope you have managed to see someone and find out what's going on.

cyrkus · 22/04/2025 08:33

Hi all. Thanks for (mostly!) supportive messages. So I went to moorfields. The doctor found what it was - a very small malformation of the veins which is bleeding. She was pretty rude though. First she said it was impossible as there is no structure in the eye socket that can bleed. And was I sure. 😀 I said that I was sure. When she found it she said it was tiny - I asked her what we can do about it and she said I don’t know. So I said what do we do if it continues to bleed. To which the answer was (again) I don’t know. She did say if it grew they could call it something and I said ok, and then what would we do. You can guess the answer. I also told her it hurts a bit to which she said it can’t do. So … not sure what happens next. Hope it stops? I just really hope it doesn’t bleed in public because quite frankly it looks horrific!

I'm so glad you went - it sounded most alarming! I hope it settles, that you feel better, and that you get some rest today after your hectic night. Sending eye-healing vibes xx

Nominative · 22/04/2025 08:44

If it continues it would be worth asking your GP for a formal referral to someone who hopefully knows a bit more than the doctor you saw.

Agapornis · 22/04/2025 08:50

I'd be going back to Moorfields during the daytime, when hopefully a more knowledgeable person is on duty. Or you'll at least insist on seeing a more senior person because 'that's impossible' [it being painful] is not an acceptable answer. Fair enough if you don't know, but at least get a colleague involved who does.

This. Take pictures of the bloody mess too.

Absolutely -

if you did get a video of the bleeding it will
be very useful in helping someone more
appropriate diagnose your issue.
I hope you see someone more polite too!

RB68 · 22/04/2025 08:53

I would get an appt at GP, when there explain, explain a&e visit and ask for a referral.

If it happens again photos and video as evidence you are not making it up (surprised they didn't give you weight advice and anti Ds).

In the mean time keep your eyes rested and screen time to a minimum esp with a larger screen as the eye movements are quite intense.

CalmBalonz · 22/04/2025 08:53

Get straight to the hospital and get it checked out.

Starlight7080 · 22/04/2025 08:56

How unhelpful. And to make you feel like you are wasting time. Surely the natural thing for anyone who's eye bleeds is to seek medical attention. It's not exactly a common problem.

I would also go to see a gp or get a second opinion if it keeps happening

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 22/04/2025 09:00

Whoever you saw sounds a wee bit cocky and dismissive to me......I mean I avoid hospitals and doctors as much as possible and will see my pharmacist for most things but even I'd be making a GP appointment for something like this. Get an appointment booked in. They may refer you to an eye specialist to be on the safe side. Get videos of it happening if you can too.

wannawoo · 22/04/2025 09:01

My god. Get to the optician pronto. Good luck.

DivaRainbow · 22/04/2025 09:05

Maybe also be worth booking an appointment with an optician! They have better resources to investigate more, they can also refer to specialist if need be.
Hope your feeling better today

wannawoo · 22/04/2025 09:06

Just walk into a local independent optician. They won’t knock you back.

SunflowersVanGough · 22/04/2025 09:06

Make an emergency appointment with your GP and optician - do both. Video it happening.

3amamama · 22/04/2025 09:07

Wow, ok. I would submit some constructive feedback re that doctor, how horrible.

GP and referral to ophthalmology. Only problem is it might take about 3 years. Can you go private?

dogcatkitten · 22/04/2025 09:09

You could try an optician first (if you haven't already gone to A&E), it might be quicker to be seen and you may get through A&E faster if they ring in, if it is serious. A good optician should be very knowledgeable about eye problems and they can do quite sophisticated scans these days.

Lazlothevampire · 22/04/2025 09:10

Don’t bother with a GP. Honestly, go to an optician. They will refer you to an eye hospital.

Bigfatsunandclouds · 22/04/2025 09:10

bananaramaisdabomb · 22/04/2025 05:20

Go to any high street optician. I damaged my eye recently (gardening, got a bit of rubbish in my eye, it wouldn’t stop watering all day). We have a good eye hospital nearby, but the A&E times there are bonkers, so I thought I would just ask in the optician first, and go to hospital if they advised. They did a proper examination with all the machines and dye etc, found it was a corneal scratch, and prescribed the right eye drops. in and out in an hour.

She literally has blood gushing out of her eye, it is not the same as a corneal scratch with eye watering
