To ask how some people making looking so normal so good?

I’m genuinely baffled, yesterday at work one of the women came in and I was blown away as I am most days. It was Friday so she was dressed a bit more casual. She only had on a pair of mom jeans, and a plain crewneck jumper, but it was to put togetherness that I couldn’t get over. Underneath her jumper, she had a long white sleeve top and the neck of the top could JUST be seen popping up from her jumper, she rolled up her jumper sleeves so you could see the white sleeves underneath, she had a pair of Adidas sambas on. It just looked so perfectly put together and thought out yet so simple at the same time. If I tried to emulate that I would look scruffy!! Just how does she do it? Anyone have any insight? I asked her and she told me where she got said items but I supppse it’s the fit that worked so well.

Is she tall? Daft question, but all the people I see sporting the 'effortlessly casual' look are tall and slim.
It 5' 1", I just look dumpy in that get-up!

Superstar22 · 12/04/2025 07:46

I think it’s usually helpful if you are tallish and slim. Everything seems to look better on those lucky people.
for everyone else, myself included, I follow some normal instragram people who put together nice outfits. Mollie campsie is one.
Also, I’ve been looking at the M&S models online (again, Instagram) as M&S are having a massive moment. Quite literally I’m buying (or recreating) their outfits not just some pieces.
another thing to do is gradually get classic pieces. White t shirts, black linen pants, trainers and some grey jumpers or a suede shirt or a striped shirt and look after your skin.

Drink lots of water and get some sleep. I don’t think it’s much more complicated than that.

No shes 5’2 she’s tiny, 🤣 shes about a size 10ish I know that much because we were talking about size a while ago and she said she used to be a size 6 in but since getting older and having two dc she’s a size 10 mostly.

Confidence. Being happy and comfortable in who you are is very attractive.

FiveTreeHill · 12/04/2025 07:57

I have a colleague like who just always looks absolutely stunning and well put together no matter what she wears. She always smells nice and looks really clean with not a hair out of place.

I think firstly it's because she's tall and slim, and all her clothes fit her really well, and secondly she irons everything. But no matter what steps I follow I don't have the same aura

StonwEd · 12/04/2025 07:57

It’s a lovely, casual, simple get up. Most would look nice dressed like that, hair done, simple make up, lovely. Try something similar if you like it!

This. It’s 30% what you wear and 70% how you are.

She’s taking small easy tips that are often touted as ‘styling versus wearing’ on instagram - the white top peeping and sleeves turned up.

I have outfits that I love and think look ‘put together’. If I’m having a low self confidence day and I put the same things on, I think I look crap.

AprilBunny · 12/04/2025 07:59

I don’t know the answer but I think about it a lot, especially at this time of year. I find Spring dressing the most difficult season to dress for. Then I see someone with the perfect striped top and trench coat who doesn’t look hot or cold and looks perfectly put together and I think how , just how?

I was actually going to say this! I discovered last week that someone I know who always looks flawless irons everything! I don't even own an iron. Thinking of trying it out.

Upsetbetty · 12/04/2025 08:01

Omg the ironing! She irons everything! Yes! Could this be it! 🤣 it was the white bit of the T-shirt popping up behind the jumper collar that I loved the most (weird to say I know) it was the perfect layering. I’m going to have to buy a few bits and try it.

Perhaps her clothes are newish? The same outfit put together from clothes you've had in the wardrobe for years and scruffy trainers might not look so elegant.

JoyousEagle · 12/04/2025 08:02

I think finding clothes that fit you really well (or having them altered but I assume she hasn’t done that to jeans and a jumper) makes a big difference.
And it sounds like she’s paid attention to the details you mention around the white top being seen a little bit but not too much - she knows that that top and that jumper sit well as layers. So it’s a simple outfit but maybe actually quite carefully and deliberately put together so what you see is “just casual jeans and jumper” but it’s a specific jumper with a specific top, and she wouldn’t wear just any jeans, but she knows these ones work particularly well.

Beepbeepoutoftheway · 12/04/2025 08:03

My SIL is like this. Absolutely flawless. If I copy anything she wears, I end up looking like I got dressed in a charity shop... in the dark 🙈

As you’re keen on this, here’s a tip I saw the other day (not tried it myself) - if your white T shirt doesn’t peep above your jumper neckline, wear it back to front! The back neckline of the T shirt is likely higher than the front and may create the perfect peep 😂😂

(I have never done the layered peeping and don’t own a white T shirt but this thread now has me thinking it is the secret to all effortless put-together vibes.)

She does wear mostly Levi’s jeans as she says she knows her “fit” from there as she went into the store last year and got fitted properly and then bought 4 pairs and she rotates them. But she buys petite wide legged pants from next too and wears them with simple T-shirts and a blazer of cardigan. It’s the layering and fit I think. 🤔 I need to pick her brain more…

There’s a woman on TikTok who does exactly this- takes a normal everyday outfit like jeans and a jumper and elevates it in exactly the way you’ve described, layers it so there’s some collar peeking through, puts on some jewellery, folds up the sleeves etc. Most people just don’t bother thinking about it that much and just throw on the jeans and jumper.

Oh!! That's my theory out the window!

If not height per se, it's probably to do with good proportions- possibly comparatively long legs too, plus posture- and great hair!

This made me laugh. I feel the same, I always look like I’ve tried way too hard and raided a randoms wardrobe.

Well she’s a brunette and quite attractive (does not look her age!) yes so I’m guessing that helps a lot. Long legs she does not have…when we talk clothing she always says how she has to buy trousers from the petite sections and some shops just don’t cater for petite folk.

She must do this then but she doesn’t have TikTok, but I suppose you can look things up on google etc if needed.

@Upsetbetty Even down to hair. She can throw hers up and it looks perfect. I throw mine up, I look like like I've been dragged through a hedge (quoting my mother 😂)

Tbh you would have raided someone else’s wardrobe/look. Put Together Work Colleague Lady looks that way because she knows what suits her. She sticks to her perfect Levi’s and rotates them. She knows those petite Next pants fit her.

Your look might be different.

Or, part of the reason you feel like you’ve raided the dressing up box is you’re not owning it (the confidence points made upthread). Fake it til you make it!

Changeeman · 12/04/2025 08:12

The key normally is in "styling" the outfit, rather than just wearing the clothes.

So wearing the jeans, jumper and trainers - but having the tshirt peeking underneath, wearing the right socks with the trainers, having complimentary jewellery to finish the outfit off and neat hair/makeup will make a huge difference to how the clothes look.

Catchingrays · 12/04/2025 08:13

Sometimes it might be just a few small things. I’ve got jewellery and shoes and nice bags that I hardly ever wear.

Also a bit of planning in advance. So instead of getting up and throwing on whatever you can find or the same thing every day, plan what to wear and check it’s clean and ironed (I don’t iron everything but some things need it.)
