I’m genuinely baffled, yesterday at work one of the women came in and I was blown away as I am most days. It was Friday so she was dressed a bit more casual. She only had on a pair of mom jeans, and a plain crewneck jumper, but it was to put togetherness that I couldn’t get over. Underneath her jumper, she had a long white sleeve top and the neck of the top could JUST be seen popping up from her jumper, she rolled up her jumper sleeves so you could see the white sleeves underneath, she had a pair of Adidas sambas on. It just looked so perfectly put together and thought out yet so simple at the same time. If I tried to emulate that I would look scruffy!! Just how does she do it? Anyone have any insight? I asked her and she told me where she got said items but I supppse it’s the fit that worked so well.

My friend L at my work is like this. She barely wears any visible makeup and all her clothes are very simple. But she is much more into fashion than it may appear - her effortless haircut is from The Hair Bros, she bought 4 of the same COS t-shirt when she found the perfect one, she likes those little layering touches like your friend. She always wears the same pair of hoop earrings but she’s made absolutely sure they’re the right ones.

AprilBunny · 12/04/2025 08:13

Do her clothes look expensive, I think that makes a massive difference?

No shes 5’2 she’s tiny, 🤣 shes about a size 10ish I know that much because we were talking about size a while ago and she said she used to be a size 6 in but since getting older and having two dc she’s a size 10 mostly.

Petite women look neater in clothes.

There have been so many posts on here over the years about how proud people are that they don't iron, and no-one can tell. Or no-one cares etc.

But it is very noticeable to me, and it can make or break an outfit imo.

It is just the final touch to looking polished.

Agix · 12/04/2025 08:15

Out of curiosity OP, did you tell her how lovely she looked? :)

levis are expensive enough in the jeans world I suppose and they seem to wear well. You can tell she looks after her clothes. The jumper and top she had on she bought from next in “the set” section, I’m looking this morning and they are great basics 🙌 but not crazy expensive. But the ironing probably helps.

I'm really useless when it comes to this. Like give me clothes and I will make them look bad. I'm tall and slim but I just have no fashion sense at all. I can't see what looks good. That's why I don't put up any decorations at home and why I don't wear make up. I rather rationalise my lack of talent into "Ha, I don't care" mode than trying and utterly failing.

doodahdayy · 12/04/2025 08:16

Nice figure and attractive and knows how to dress for her shape. Not everyone can wear the same thing and look good in it

Catchingrays · 12/04/2025 08:17

When I see real people wearing the clothes on retail websites eg M&S they look fantastic. Some show a short video of how they style a pair of jeans eg with a short jacket, trainers and bag and I think some people just have the knack of styling things so they look good.

Is she tall? Daft question, but all the people I see sporting the 'effortlessly casual' look are tall and slim.
It 5' 1", I just look dumpy in that get-up!

5'9, I always look scruffy even when I'm dressed up. No idea how.

Some people just have an "elegance" the rest of us don't.

I most certainly did! She had had a bad week too so she was perked up over my fawning 🤣 I asked a multitude of questions and she wrote down where her pieces were from. Bless her. She’s so lovely too.

Perhaps her clothes are newish? The same outfit put together from clothes you've had in the wardrobe for years and scruffy trainers might not look so elegant.

This. If the outfit is basically jeans, a jumper and trainers then it looks so nicely put together because the clothes are new and/or ironed and the trainers are new. Trainers start looking scruffy quite quickly (which is obviously one of the reasons the clothing industry love to sell them to us - multiple colours, they can't be repaired easily and it's difficult to keep them looking nice, so people buy more of them. But I digress...)

She must do this then but she doesn’t have TikTok, but I suppose you can look things up on google etc if needed.

I didn’t mean that she had seen the TikTok’s necessarily, just that the theory exists.

As you’re keen on this, here’s a tip I saw the other day (not tried it myself) - if your white T shirt doesn’t peep above your jumper neckline, wear it back to front! The back neckline of the T shirt is likely higher than the front and may create the perfect peep 😂😂

(I have never done the layered peeping and don’t own a white T shirt but this thread now has me thinking it is the secret to all effortless put-together vibes.)

I had my tshirt on back to front (by accident Blush) the other day and wondered why it showed more under the jumper I normally wear it with. I got too hot and took the jumper off (because I was being practical not stylish!) and suddenly felt the tshirt was uncomfortable and discovered it was back to front!
Obviously no one has ever asked me for style tips! 🤣

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 12/04/2025 08:20

Im out for a good friend's 60th day time soire today in town and I have no clue what to wear. I was honestly thinking of wearing my new white shirt with some jeans and a blazer. Im literally scraping through after a very heavy cold and cant be arsed but i need to go. My daughter has some sambas. I might nick them and give it a try. I am 52 though lol. I guess we shall see when I get dressed!

SoScarletItWas · 12/04/2025 08:21

You were leading the trend @Fizbosshoes without even knowing it!

Aozora13 · 12/04/2025 08:24

You could actually be describing a friend of mine. My friend definitely does put a lot of effort into her appearance generally and is petite with shiny hair, but even so I think that some people just have an innate polish or something which means they could look chic in a bin bag. Unfortunately I am the opposite and somehow manage to make chic look like a bin bag.

Slim
Clean
Owns an iron and uses it.
Hair is looked after.
Nails tidy.
Clothes relatively new.
Knows what suits her and what doesn't. Avoids things that don't fit her body shape
Wears clothes that are the right size.

Careerdecisions · 12/04/2025 08:27

I think the fit is really important too, especially for those of us who are a bit shorter. I often find tops and bottoms sit too long on me and make me look shorter and dumpier than they would if they went in and out and stopped at the right places on my body.

SomethingFun · 12/04/2025 08:29

I think it’s proportions of you and your clothes. Jumpers are really hard to get right - most of mine fit poorly because they’re cheap and I’m cold so I don’t care 😁 Jeans/ trousers need to be the exact right length to look perfect. I am more of a dress person as I find it easier to find a dress that looks good than separates.

SonoPazziQuestiRomani · 12/04/2025 08:36

I think the shirt peeping out of the collar thing is clothes with neckline that follow the same curve iyswim - whether it works is either luck of the draw or perhaps they were from the same brand. Assuming we're talking about a crew neck jumper it looks nicer than the jumper on its own because the t shirt creates a similar effect to a collared blouse underneath, so just a little point of detail. I like to wear a patterned blouse under a jumper and turn the cuffs up so you see the pattern there as well as the collar and it transforms the outfit. You could also try a small square scarf to achieve a similar effect on the neckline (but I appreciate that that style isn't everyone's cup of tea).

Edited for typos 🙄

No!! Being tall makes it very difficult to find clothes that are actually long enough, and fit properly... or even wear women's shoes!

DancingLions · 12/04/2025 08:40

I just seem to be a natural scruff and can’t fix it! Example, sometimes I wear a cardigan, everyone else seems to be able to throw one on and it looks fine. When I do it, whatever is underneath gets all pulled out of place and I have to keep adjusting it. That’s just one example of many!

I suspect a lot of it is my body shape. I’m all out of proportion. I have a broad back, long arms and legs, which makes my torso look stumpy. I have no boobs to speak of! High street clothes are generally made for a more feminine body than mine. It also doesn’t help that I’m really clumsy and spill things! I can’t wear white/cream, doesn’t last 5 minutes with me.

I would love to look put together but I think it’s beyond me. So I tend to just buy stuff I like and do the best I can!
