I’m genuinely baffled, yesterday at work one of the women came in and I was blown away as I am most days. It was Friday so she was dressed a bit more casual. She only had on a pair of mom jeans, and a plain crewneck jumper, but it was to put togetherness that I couldn’t get over. Underneath her jumper, she had a long white sleeve top and the neck of the top could JUST be seen popping up from her jumper, she rolled up her jumper sleeves so you could see the white sleeves underneath, she had a pair of Adidas sambas on. It just looked so perfectly put together and thought out yet so simple at the same time. If I tried to emulate that I would look scruffy!! Just how does she do it? Anyone have any insight? I asked her and she told me where she got said items but I supppse it’s the fit that worked so well.

I always look a state, no matter what I’m in.

I was bridesmaid once where the bride spent a fucking fortune on designer dresses and I still looked like I’d slept on a park bench in it.

This made me laugh 😆

Love this thread, thanks for the Next recommendation, I haven't seen that before and also for the stylist tips video, very useful.

I am average height and build, (with a bit of a tummy) and never look put together. I am always cold so wear a big puffer coat all winter, it always seems to have muddy marks on it from when I get out of the car.
I love wide leg jeans but seem to look like a battleship coming in to view in them.
I could not pull off a sleek hair do in any way as I have hair like Grotbags.
I once got very excited waiting for a camel coloured overcoat to arrive only to find that I looked like Del Boy in it.
I am in that early fifties rut where I really don't know what to wear, still trying to cling on to my youth but knowing I can't really get away with that kind of clothing anymore.

I find Kat Farmer has some great content on her instagram.

Does she have a fairly small bust? I'm quite slim but with massive norks and all my clothes just seem to hang over them and then straight down, making me look as though I have absolutely no shape at all (I have a really small waist, dammit!) It has the effect of whatever I put on looking like a sack. I envy those who can wear fitted clothes that fit them all over, rather than having to 'buy for the boobs' and accept that my top half is going to look like a beach ball.

Agree, it can be harder when you have big boobs.

I’m very flat-chested, which I hated as a teen, then started to love. Clothes tend to hang well on me. Though there’s certain things I’d never wear as they’d look fecking awful, yet they look fabulous on people with big boobs, e.g, wrap dresses.

Have you tried belted dresses or a tight top with a short jacket over? 50s Hollywood vibe. Jayne Mansfield always made her big boobs look slick.

I don't know who this poster is referring to but I follow Welliesandchampagne on Instagram and always think she looks very put together.

If you’ve ever read a fashion piece about ‘effortless style’ it’s a con because a lot of effort goes into even a simple look like that.
The white t-shirt neck popping out a little is very much a trend right now.
Everything about a look like this has thought behind it, and it’s from someone who puts effort and time into their appearance. You can bet that their wardrobe will be organised. When they buy something new they will see how it works with what they already have.
They don’t roll out of bed in the morning and throw something on. All items will be cared for.
I also think some people just have a naturally tidy to look to them. They tend to be neat in all areas of their lives.
I know this because this used to be me.
Now I have gone through the menopause and I am mid 50’s, I have turned into Miriam Margolyes.
Jennifer Aniston always looks neat and fresh as a daisy. Sigh.

Petite women look neater in clothes.

We really don’t lol. I’m 5ft and am the same as the op. See things that look fab on people. Try and copy the look and end up looking like a bag of rags 😆

I feel your pain. My hair used to be my pride and joy and it’s like a pile of dry, wire wool.
I see a lot of women my age on Insta. They are usually blonde, very tanned, very slim wearing lots of stacked jewellery. Cool jeans and tops. A cashmere sweater. An expensive coat. It’s the same look over and over.
Then when I try it I look ridiculous. And if I put on any kind of tweed jacket/coat I look like Miss Babs off Acorn Antiques.

I agree re wrap dresses! But tight tops, while at least giving me more shape, do tend to make me look as though I'm touting for custom, which, at 64, is NOT a good look. I'm working on finding a wardrobe of clothes that are fitted in the right places and don't make me look like a bag of spanners.

I’m remembering the Mumsnetter who attempted a black leather jacket and said that she ended up looking like “Suzi Quattro’s fat nan”.

Catchingrays · 12/04/2025 10:14

I watched one of the cocobeautea videos a pp linked above. She looks lovely and I love the understated clothes but she is very slim (not tall?) and looks like a model. I don’t know anyone in real life who looks like that.

I can’t style my hair in the sleeked back bun style she wears as I don’t have the hairline. It looks awful on me!

I couldn’t wear the cream trousers as they wouldn’t suit my lifestyle and I would be scared to sit down anywhere. The Russell and Bromley shoes are great but would be frumpsville on me.

The clothes are mostly simple and she has a good bag and understated jewellery, nice nails and beautiful hair and teeth.

crowonabranch · 12/04/2025 10:15

@Teado That has been going through my head too. I once treated myself to a gorgeous All Saints leather jacket and discovered that I too could not get away with one. I tried a few times then sold it on eBay.

Catchingrays · 12/04/2025 10:20

I agree with pps that you have to dress to suit your actual body.

I don’t look good in the current trend of oversized trousers and trainers as it’s too much material and I look scruffy.

I have a friend who looked lovely recently in a fine knit fitted jumper and pleated skirt but that would be the worst style for me with biggish boobs, a short body and a small pot belly.

Bonesy1 · 12/04/2025 10:22

Upsetbetty · 12/04/2025 08:01

Omg the ironing! She irons everything! Yes! Could this be it! 🤣 it was the white bit of the T-shirt popping up behind the jumper collar that I loved the most (weird to say I know) it was the perfect layering. I’m going to have to buy a few bits and try it.

I can help with this, put the white t shirt on backwards, makes it sit a tiny bit higher and voila it’s peeling out!!

I think I look good in leather jackets, but I just have such a small window to wear them in, basically only cooler summer days. As I feel the cold they're not enough in autumn, winter or spring and are obviously too much on hot summer days. It's a pity.
I also think PVC looks just as good as leather so it's not about spending money either.

Yes, clothes aren't made for short people so they never look quite right. Petite doesn't work on me either because I'm not small all over - I've got short legs but normal sized arms.

Ha! How does a tight black, round neck top look, with a block coloured jacket over? Or a simple plain round neck cotton cardigan? H&M do some good cotton ones.

Black with a coloured layer over might make your boobs recede a bit more. Then a long pendant to draw the eye down towards your tiny waist?

I was actually going to say this! I discovered last week that someone I know who always looks flawless irons everything! I don't even own an iron. Thinking of trying it out.

It's not just owning an iron- it's being able to iron properly.

It is a skill, one I haven't mastered.

I actually take my outfit to my friend if I have an important interview/wedding because she can iron in crispness, I just seem to smooth out the creases.

I do wear round neck tops. Unfortunately jackets and cardigans aren't really 'me', they make me look stumpy and mumsy - alongside the big boobs I have very short legs despite being 5'6. And I never wear jewellery at all. Style and I really are strangers to one another, sigh.

JustAnInchident · 12/04/2025 10:28

It’s funny isn’t it? I have a friend like this. She’s stunningly beautiful, slim and tallish, all of which help in the way of looking together and polished, of course, but her clothes are always immaculate too, despite having two small children she’s very hands on with. She’s not fancy or frilly but she always looks ‘just so’, even in clothes that are very ordinary and are the type of thing any one of us wears. I think a lot of it comes down to good accessorising and styling, but it’s not something I do well at achieving!
Good job she’s such a fantastic friend or I’d be in danger of hating her thoroughly 😅

viques · 12/04/2025 10:29

Every year I have the same spring task, find the perfect white t shirt ( and buy several) . I like slightly longer sleeves, maybe with a little cuff, a well shaped neckline which must be thin and well stitched, t shirt has to be thin cotton with a bit of shape. And a reasonable price.

I love a challenge!

I love faux leather fitted bomber jackets with a high zip up neck and breast pockets and stretched waistband, as fitted jackets look better on me.

They were two-a-penny a few years back. I got the most recent one for £25 online. Wore it to death. The zip up neck made it v warm in the evening, like a polo neck. But the fabric has finally rubbed off from my bag strap. And now I can’t find them anywhere. Most styles are too blousony and unfitted for me.
