To ask when you got your first grey hair

so I’m 26 and I’ve got a few clusters of grey hairs growing from around my hairline and behind my ears. Theres 3 or 4 that are very visible when I tie my hair up.
I know it’s normal to get grey hairs but I didn’t think I’d get so many so young? My parents didn’t go grey in their 20s. I’m not going to colour them as I think it’d be easier to embrace them but just wondering when you first started going grey?

I think I was 19 or 20.

ScentOfAMoomin · 10/04/2025 10:02

I was 14.

I got one strand at around about your age which I pulled out and then another strand 3 years ago and none since. I’m 40. There doesn’t seem to be any real pattern or logic to it.

I got 5 or 6 white hairs whilst going through IVF at 27. I pulled them out and they have grown back pigmented (or never grown back) as I don't have a single white hair now, 6 years on.

I don't know if it was hormones or the intense emotions surrounding that time.

noworklifebalance · 10/04/2025 10:08

In my 20s I noticed a few strands. Then several more once I had children, so mid-30s. Really ramped up mid-40s.
I am resisting the urge to dye it as I am lazy and won’t keep it up so will end up with awful roots.

I'm early 40s and don't have any yet, but my teen has a grey streak

ImthatBoleyngirl · 10/04/2025 10:09

About 26 in similar places to you. Would dye it semi regularly but wasn't too worried. By about 35 or 36 I think I was pretty grey (hard to tell as always dyed) and now at 39 I ideally would redo my roots every 4 weeks, although in reality it's usually more like 6 or 7. It's very definitely visible grey after that many weeks, especially if I put my hair up. I'm annoyed it's another thing to deal with! Also didn't expect to go grey anything like this early.

Motomum23 · 10/04/2025 10:10

A few silver hairs in my 20s and lots of grey by 35... I'm embracing it can't be bothered with dye!

Hattysbackpack · 10/04/2025 10:10

I was 30, just after having my first baby. It was in that area of hair at the front that falls out and grows back postpartum. I’m now 40 and I still only have a few strands which are all in that same area.

32 and I dont think I've got any, but my hair is that light brown/dark blonde colour so it's possible that they'd be less noticeable until I start going completely grey.

ScottBakula · 10/04/2025 10:13

About 16 , my Ddad was apparently 14 and dm about 19

bettydavieseyes · 10/04/2025 10:13

About 29. I've dyed it myself since I was 18 so on this day I noticed a couple of greys when I'd not done my roots. Still dye it now at 45 so I never see them, I know I would have a fair few by now, I see them in my roots. My natural colour is darkish blonde and I dye it light blonde.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 10/04/2025 10:13

I think 24, soon after I had my first child. I have blonde hair though, so I probably had some before then that I hadn't noticed - I was only looking at my hair particularly then because it was falling out!

JoanJet · 10/04/2025 10:16

Late twenties I started getting the odd silver hair. I remember being quite upset about it. Partner went fully grey by thirty. I only got the odd one until mid thirties when I started getting quite a few soft white hairs. Now I am forty my hair is getting streaked with white. I don’t particularly like it but I can’t dye it because I have a skin condition on my scalp so it is what it is.

BurgundyZero · 10/04/2025 10:18
