Do you wipe your bottom standing up or sitting down?

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 10:41

Well, I thought this was an entirely uncontroversial topic, but my DH has discovered (through a conversation) that I stand up to wipe my bottom after going to to the loo.

Do you, for whatever reason, do the same? Or are you a sitter and you lean either forwards or to the side?

I feel as though there are multiple reasons to stand, perhaps you have mobility issues, a larger body, or it is simply your preference (like me).

Please tell me that at least some of you do this and I am not entirely abnormal!!

Sitting down and use a bidet bottle (helps prevent UTIs)

I have a Japanese bidet. All you suckers are living in the past.

How is this different from a standard bidet? Will Google. I am very intrigued

I have never wiped my bum sat down. I can't even picture how that works!

I don't fully stand up though, I sort of half stand up and hover over the toilet....a bit like I'm squatting. That's always made the most sense to me to ensure I am getting completely clean.

cant believe I’m even commenting on this thread but I also do this. How can you even do it sat down?

Toddlers are often taught that way because it's much easier to reach, but January progresses to sitting down wiping... maybe your mum's got to explicitly say that when you were little??

@justtheonequestion1

i'm taking this as a genuine question and as more than idle curiosity.

I had a car accident a few years ago and wiping sitting down was no longer possible with my arm in the sling. Also, the pain on moving and stretching. Wiping in general was very very difficult, but I had to do it standing for awhile, then gradually found different ways of leaning and moving that made wiping sitting down possible once again.

Much more recently (as per my username) I had a couple of strokes and once again could not reach to wipe or use my dominant hand. At first I couldn't even manage myself in any way and had to get help.(whilst I admit it cannot be a nice thing to have to help with some of them did it with good grace and others of them were particularly nasty). I have a lot of nerve pain and one side of my torso is very difficult to bend, and I was wiping standing up, but I really hate the process of not doing it sitting over the toilet, overtime I have been able to find a way that works for me sitting down, but I really don't know how I would describe it. It's more of an arching my back then bending forward. I always use a wet wipe to finish sometimes sitting sometimes standing.

I am sorry to learn that you have been so unwell. I hope that you find comfort wherever and however you can 💐

I stand and honestly thought this was normal until I realised my OH sits. I figure I have quite short arms as I really can’t reach properly sitting down and feel like I can’t clean properly. I don’t think I was taught this potty training as I recall sitting when I was a child and I always ended up with skid marks so I think I learned that standing was better to get cleaner.

I think this is the case for a lot of us standing-wipers. Either arms are too short and cannot quite reach or it is simply uncomfortable / painful to have to contort yourself whilst sitting!

I sit and wipe although the toilet paper is always clean. There's never anything on it. I always assumed it was normal to not have poo around your bumhole after going to the toilet but then I read otherwise on mumsnet. I must have very dry poo!
Op do you have mobility issues as tou say it hurts to do it sitting down and you have to hold on even when standing?

Gillian McKeith (if you remember who she was?!) always said if you’re diet was healthy then there should be no poo left to wipe!
It varies here!

Dotjones · 31/03/2025 13:15

Stand, always have, genuinely only found out a few weeks ago that some people sit. I honestly don't understand how sitting down to do it would even work, how can you get your hand into position?

Some American prison/army films (eg Full Metal Jacket, the toilet where Private Pile suffers his final breakdown) make a bit more sense knowing that some people sit down. I'd sometimes wondered how it worked, having a bunch of toilets out in the open with no cubicles. Fine (well, not "fine") when actually taking a shit, but surely it is awkward when you stand up to wipe. Maybe sitting down to wipe is common in American prisons. And public toilets there generally didn't have doors until the 1960s.

Toilet habits are one of those things I guess you just develop yourself. I can picture how the Asian style "squat and shit into a hole in the ground" toilets work, in those "facilities" i can even picture how wiping your arse might work. But sitting down? Makes no sense to me.

Verv · 31/03/2025 13:17

Sit, lean to the right, reach back and wipe. (im left handed)
I had no idea that people actually stood to wipe. This is complete news.

AirFryerCrumpet · 31/03/2025 13:18

What I don't get is why some people find their bum is further away (or arms shorter) when sitting, but if you stand your bum gets closer??

Esssa · 31/03/2025 13:19

I think the next question is do you wipe by going through from the front or do you reach over around the side. I can't reach around the side without discomfort so go through the middle being careful not to cross contaminate the 2 regions.

Yes - a good diet and good fluid intake, plus, a tapered stool!!

Isn't it pretty much the same as standing up but you're sitting down?
Or are standers going in between their legs?

Think it could be the angle

I think it's maybe the twisting movement while seated v standing rather than length of arms which is key here.
Maybe a less flexible core/middle age spread etc is a contributing factor.

Oh no! - not between the legs.
Impossible methinks, to wipe front to back between legs while standing.
You'd end up rolled up in a ball like a traumatised hedgehog😉

Also use wet wipes here. I am pleased to see your response because it means I am not the only one. Seems to be quite a divisive topic though. Didn't imagine there would be so many people who thought wiping whilst standing was odd

For those who use wet wipes (which are not flushable - whatever they say on the packet), there is a useful gel called WYPE, which is flushable, used with ordinary tp and very effective. Comes in handbag size too. Order online. I am not associated with the company, but have used it for quite a while and recommend it.

I wouldn't pay a blind bit of attention to anything she said/says. She is a pseudoscientific peddler of snake oil.

Justalittlehotpotato · 31/03/2025 13:36

In Asia, they have a bum gun in every toilet. As my arse is so big, I needed to have a bum cannon installed. Stand, point, cannon that bottom clean.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 31/03/2025 13:39

What happened to Gillian McKeith? She was all the rage once and I even had her cookbook, then she seemed to fade into nonexistence.

Same here. Always done it standing up, although not fully standing - more squatting over toilet.

Never knew sitting down was a thing until about a year ago when a whatsapp group I'm on started discussing it.

Also blows my mind that sitting down is a thing - I can't even work out how that works.

Katkins17 · 31/03/2025 13:43

I find a handstand in the shower is the most hygienic method.

Carodebalo · 31/03/2025 13:48

I’m with you OP, I always stand up. Have not given it much thought before, I can’t even remember what I taught my children to do!
