Do you wipe your bottom standing up or sitting down?

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 10:41

Well, I thought this was an entirely uncontroversial topic, but my DH has discovered (through a conversation) that I stand up to wipe my bottom after going to to the loo.

Do you, for whatever reason, do the same? Or are you a sitter and you lean either forwards or to the side?

I feel as though there are multiple reasons to stand, perhaps you have mobility issues, a larger body, or it is simply your preference (like me).

Please tell me that at least some of you do this and I am not entirely abnormal!!

Op I stand too, well a very dignified squat/hover over the toilet. I can’t do it sitting down the seat gets in the way ! I guess this is how I was taught to do it

Gdaygnight · 31/03/2025 12:35

I don’t wipe, that’s what knickers are for

Emmz1510 · 31/03/2025 12:37

I stand

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 31/03/2025 12:37

I sit, I don’t think I could reach stood up and I think my fat arse cheeks would squash any mess and make it worse.

Letty186 · 31/03/2025 12:39

I sit, husband stands 🤔

MoonWoman69 · 31/03/2025 12:40

@justtheonequestion1
I stand and so does my OH. I use loo roll, then finish off with wet loo roll.

And no, shit does not get smeared everywhere! I think sitting down and wiping is odd! But then we each have our own ways, if it works for you, brilliant!

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 10:49

Honestly I think it's because I find it a bit difficult to wipe whilst sitting down. I tend to lean to the side though (if sitting down), and perhaps I have been doing that all wrong and need to just lean forwards. It is sort of painful in my side / ribs to twist to the side like that

Get yourself a colostomy bag. It all comes out the front. Possibly the only advantage, but lemons/lemonade 🙂

StartAnew · 31/03/2025 12:41

No need for the expense and environmental impact of wet wipes. A damp piece of loo roll does the job if necessary.

Wingedharpy · 31/03/2025 12:43

MiddleAgedDread · 31/03/2025 11:46

DO NOT FLUSH BABY WIPES / WET WIPES / ANYTHING OTHER THAN TISSUE PAPER!!
Even if it claims to be biodegradeable or flushable!! They still block sewers. The standards that products have to adhere to in order to marketed as flushable is quite frankly outrageous and should be banned. If you read the small print they are only flushable if you flush one at a time on a full flush. Biodegradeable is a pointless marketing gimmick.

I use the "fine to flush" ones with the tick.
I do only use 1 per flush and I did do my own home test before I used them to see what happened.
1 wipe (clean and unused!!) put in a jug with cold water, had "dissolved" completely after a few hours.
I acknowledge that toilet paper would dissolve quicker, but it did dissolve.
My Victorian drains have never given me any problem.

I find the wet loo roll just leaves bits attached to your butt to be honest

skipdiddyskip · 31/03/2025 12:44

I have a Japanese bidet. All you suckers are living in the past.

I have stood up to wipe all my life and I assume that is what my mother taught me to do. Never even considered doing it sitting down and don’t like the thought of it. I use wet wipes after a poo for a thorough clean.

Toddlers are often taught that way because it's much easier to reach, but January progresses to sitting down wiping... maybe your mum's got to explicitly say that when you were little??

@justtheonequestion1

i'm taking this as a genuine question and as more than idle curiosity.

I had a car accident a few years ago and wiping sitting down was no longer possible with my arm in the sling. Also, the pain on moving and stretching. Wiping in general was very very difficult, but I had to do it standing for awhile, then gradually found different ways of leaning and moving that made wiping sitting down possible once again.

Much more recently (as per my username) I had a couple of strokes and once again could not reach to wipe or use my dominant hand. At first I couldn't even manage myself in any way and had to get help.(whilst I admit it cannot be a nice thing to have to help with some of them did it with good grace and others of them were particularly nasty). I have a lot of nerve pain and one side of my torso is very difficult to bend, and I was wiping standing up, but I really hate the process of not doing it sitting over the toilet, overtime I have been able to find a way that works for me sitting down, but I really don't know how I would describe it. It's more of an arching my back then bending forward. I always use a wet wipe to finish sometimes sitting sometimes standing.

I actually think this is a rather helpful thread! The fact we’re too embarrassed to talk about such things are what leads to shame & confusion. Sounds like most people find what works for them. All sorts of reasons - disabilities etc impact how we do things. Do what works for you

Thank you! And I quite agree

Do you work at my office 🤣 the amount of times the bloody toilet gets blocked by someone! Maybe this is why! The thought of standing up blows my mind, the thought you can’t just reach round the back (obvs unless you have a disability) also blows my mind! And “flushable” wipes are a bloody nightmare and block drains….trust me the amount of times I’ve had dynorod out to my office to flush the drains out. I found this company called Wype and it’s fab you put it on your loo roll and feel super clean after and no wipes clogging up the drains

Edited

No, I never block the loo - that is why I need to flush 3-4 times after every few wipes as I am petrified that if I don't then it'll block! That is grotesque that this keeps happening your office! Warrants a complaint IMO

BrilliantineStickInsect · 31/03/2025 12:52

See it blows my mind that anyone would wipe sitting down!! I might be daft but I can’t even physically picture how that would work 🤣 I’m a stand-and-wipe all the way. Well, a sort of squat-stand combo to get right in there. Wet toilet wipes too.

pizzaHeart · 31/03/2025 12:52

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 11:04

Eh? You stand up to wipe, but then what is it you are describing that you do sitting down?

I mean if I’m also using baby wipes apart from toilet paper.

MrsB74 · 31/03/2025 12:52

My DH and I have had the same conversation. Wiping whilst sat seems wrong to me, not sure why! I always stand and DH always stays sat. Weird.

DancingLions · 31/03/2025 11:57

I don't understand why people are needing to twist. I sit and lean forward. I don't need to twist anywhere! Although I do have abnormally long arms 😂I sometimes have problems finding long sleeve tops that fit right.

Never heard of anyone standing. Surely then you still need to bend forward?

Yes - can confirm that an element of bending is required if you stand

OP posts:
Growlybear83 · 31/03/2025 12:53

I used to have a cat who stood up on her back legs to poo, but I’ve never heard of a human doing this!

Delphigirl · 31/03/2025 12:54

Who are all these people using baby wipes.
you are the reason the planet is f**d

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 12:57

Lillibridge · 31/03/2025 12:13

Just from a curiosity perspective, I think I may try standing next time I need the loo. I honestly didn't know it was a thing so I just have to give it a go. Might be a revelation!

This has genuinely made my day

I think I was taught this as child and that is where the habit comes from

That’s factually incorrect! Wiping back to forward is likely to cause a UTI!

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 13:00

Tipofthecattoes · 31/03/2025 12:24

You seem very keen to quiz individuals on further toilet habits - even asking the consistency of their poo. Grim

Oh for goodness sake - stop being such a prude. There is no need to read each response on the thread if it offends you so greatly. To be so repressed!

Not 'grim' at all. It's a discussion on life experience.

Yes, precisely
