Do you wipe your bottom standing up or sitting down?

Well, I thought this was an entirely uncontroversial topic, but my DH has discovered (through a conversation) that I stand up to wipe my bottom after going to to the loo.

Do you, for whatever reason, do the same? Or are you a sitter and you lean either forwards or to the side?

I feel as though there are multiple reasons to stand, perhaps you have mobility issues, a larger body, or it is simply your preference (like me).

Please tell me that at least some of you do this and I am not entirely abnormal!!

Always stand up. Sitting down runs the risk of a uti.

I think I was taught this as child and that is where the habit comes from

I slide across the carpet it works for the cat.

Only if you’re wiping from back to front, which is the wrong way. Front to back always.

After a poo, do you mean? If so, sitting down. You must have quite long arms if you can do it satisfactorily standing up. If you mean after a wee, always standing up.

Yes, after a poo. I stay seated to wipe after a wee, always.

And yes I think I probably do have fairly long arms (I am quite tall), but I still find it tricky

I had no idea people did it sitting until quite recently. Mentioned it to husband and he stabds too and therefore so do all our DC.

As I get older in finding it harder to twist so I may try sitting. But it sounds quite difficult, do you stay sat or lift up slightly or what?

I have stood up to wipe all my life and I assume that is what my mother taught me to do. Never even considered doing it sitting down and don’t like the thought of it. I use wet wipes after a poo for a thorough clean.

Also use wet wipes here. I am pleased to see your response because it means I am not the only one. Seems to be quite a divisive topic though. Didn't imagine there would be so many people who thought wiping whilst standing was odd

Always sit and lean forward, never crossed my mind to stand. Easier access to your bumhole if you're sitting, never had a uti either.

I also use wet wipes, but apparently they can contribute to the development of fissures and other irritations

I wait until my neighbour has his jet washer out and just give him a shout over the fence.

How on earth can people do it sitting down, contortionist in training?

Exactly!! It is difficult, and it hurts.

Sit, lean to the left, reach bum from behind with right hand, wipe from front to back until clean.

ihatethewordhubby · 31/03/2025 10:57

standing - always

Why on earth does it hurt????

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 31/03/2025 10:57

My DP stands up and turns around - so it facing the toilet - bum facing away from the toilet... very, very odd.
I am a sitter.

Honestly I think it's because I find it a bit difficult to wipe whilst sitting down. I tend to lean to the side though (if sitting down), and perhaps I have been doing that all wrong and need to just lean forwards. It is sort of painful in my side / ribs to twist to the side like that

Yes, I get a bit of achy pain in my lower back, I presume because of the slight twisting motion to get round there. I thought it was an age thing but I just endure it because it's a task that has to be performed properly!

I may try the leaning forward approach. It could be better just as long as I don't topple over!

sitting down, I don't understand how it's so difficult, you just slightly lift one bum cheek and wipe! Have you all got T-Rex length arms?? Surely it's the same distance to reach if you're standing or sitting?

Sit, lean to the left, reach bum from behind with right hand, wipe from front to back until clean.

I imagine this sort of manoeuvre will becoming increasingly difficult in old age though?

Yes - me too. I face the toilet because I need to place one hand on the ledge above the loo to steady myself as standing still requires a degree of twisting / leaning

What's happening to all these baby wipes?

I fucking hope they're not fucking being flushed.

RatandToad · 31/03/2025 11:00

I still recall the trauma of this conversation with my husband. He is the one who stands and I was the traumatized one because I had no idea anyone did this. Also for shit smushing reasons.

Standing makes zero sense. It was an effective way to get me to take over teaching children how to wipe though!

Because it's toilet humour, it's funny.

Not sure. I just get jabbing pains in my side, similar to the very occasional feeling of getting a 'stitch' during very intense exercise

Yes most people flush them. Particularly as some packs claim to be biodegradable- but as we know you still should not flush these
