Do you wipe your bottom standing up or sitting down?

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 10:41

Well, I thought this was an entirely uncontroversial topic, but my DH has discovered (through a conversation) that I stand up to wipe my bottom after going to to the loo.

Do you, for whatever reason, do the same? Or are you a sitter and you lean either forwards or to the side?

I feel as though there are multiple reasons to stand, perhaps you have mobility issues, a larger body, or it is simply your preference (like me).

Please tell me that at least some of you do this and I am not entirely abnormal!!

They had this question come up once on QI, can't remember how, Jason Manford brought it up.
They did a survey of the audience and it was about half and half. I was astounded, never could work out how the standing up brigade managed it, tbh!

I have no idea what would motivate you to ask and I've no intention of telling you.

It is currently getting smushed, this is an issue. I thought it was normal so I am vaguely embarrassed to be frank

This is the moment in your life where you realise you have been wiping your bum wrong your whole life. Smushing poo every time is grim.

Blondebrownorred · 31/03/2025 11:11

I do eat well but not obsessively healthy. I'm not constipated or have painful poos. I have no idea why the paper is always clean. I've genuinely never had anything on the paper after a poo. I've been like this my whole life.

That is what is referred to as a ghost poo

mememe30 · 31/03/2025 11:31

We have a smart toilet. Best thing ever. Press a button and it washes my bum. Then dries it.

I slide across the carpet it works for the cat.

That really made me laugh 🤣

sweetpickle2 · 31/03/2025 11:33

I'm sorry but you smush your poo up your arse every time you have a poo and you flush the toilet 3-4 times each time and you thought that is what everyone did?

🤣🤣🤣🤣 YES. Obviously it sounds utterly ridiculous when you word it like that, but as you can see from this thread, I am far from the only one. And evidently the smushing is far from my preference, but the alternative causes pain

This sounds brilliant. What brand do you have? I think we will look at investing in one

Okay, no problem. Plenty of others have answered so your answer won't be too missed. Have a good day!

A grim necessity, at present

If this is a regular thing for you, I'd say you need to look at your diet.

Nappy bag

Aren't nappy bags made of plastic though? So presumably to use these for your entire life is just as bad for the environment as flushing wet wipes

Whaaaaat?? Who the hec stands up?

Sit, do the business, remain seated while wiping ...

What crazy fools exist out there?? And shame on you those that do handstands!!

Bubblebubblepoppop · 31/03/2025 11:45

Stand, never occurred to me not to so I guess that's how I was taught, but I see why sitting should be the norm... Might try it. I don't think I've ever had a smush issue.

MugsyBalonz · 31/03/2025 11:27

Out of the standers who find it painful to do it while sitting, how many of you are hypermobile? I stand because it's really painful to do it sitting, if I try sitting then my ribs tend to slip and I don't want to end up dislocating any of them because I don't want to have to explain to an A&E receptionist what's brought me into the department.

I don't think I am hypermobile / am not aware if I am, so I assume that means I am not?

But that is exactly where I feel the pressure / pain (in my ribs) if I try to wipe whilst sitting down

DO NOT FLUSH BABY WIPES / WET WIPES / ANYTHING OTHER THAN TISSUE PAPER!!
Even if it claims to be biodegradeable or flushable!! They still block sewers. The standards that products have to adhere to in order to marketed as flushable is quite frankly outrageous and should be banned. If you read the small print they are only flushable if you flush one at a time on a full flush. Biodegradeable is a pointless marketing gimmick.

A smushue.

Good luck with your experimenting :)

The majority of people are unaware of this, which I assume means that the problem will persist for many decades to come. Unless baby wipes are banned, which they probably should be given the damage they cause

And only toilet tissue at that. Paper handkerchief type tissues aren’t flushable either.

I think it's a brilliant question. What goes on in the toilet happens everyday to all of us. It's rarely discussed at all.
