Do you wipe your bottom standing up or sitting down?

justtheonequestion1 · 31/03/2025 10:41

Well, I thought this was an entirely uncontroversial topic, but my DH has discovered (through a conversation) that I stand up to wipe my bottom after going to to the loo.

Do you, for whatever reason, do the same? Or are you a sitter and you lean either forwards or to the side?

I feel as though there are multiple reasons to stand, perhaps you have mobility issues, a larger body, or it is simply your preference (like me).

Please tell me that at least some of you do this and I am not entirely abnormal!!

Why would sitting down give you a UTI?

I genuinely don’t know… I can’t recall! I’m on autopilot. I’m going to wait until I need to wipe and will report back with my answer. I’m intrigued as to what I’ll do 😂

I couldn’t recall either, luckily I had a chance to remember and it’s sitting with leaning on one side.
I usually stand up for wiping though.

I still recall the trauma of this conversation with my husband. He is the one who stands and I was the traumatized one because I had no idea anyone did this. Also for shit smushing reasons.

Standing makes zero sense. It was an effective way to get me to take over teaching children how to wipe though!

Shit smushing - as people are so delicately calling it on this thread 😂 is definitely a hazard of the job if you are a standing wiper. I have this daily, and it's very very bloody annoying, let me tell you. means you end up using so much extra loo roll. Probably 4 x the amount in my case

I think I was taught this as child and that is where the habit comes from

When I was a child I was taught absolutely nothing about personal hygiene. I remember when I was quite young my mother chastising me because I had a tide mark round my neck . I hadn't realised up to that point I should be washing my neck daily.
So I picked up on how i should be looking after my body as I went along in life at a much later date than most people.
So yes I used to stand up for the bum wipe thing until I learnt sitting down was the effective way. I stand up for a last wipe though.

I imagine this sort of manoeuvre will becoming increasingly difficult in old age though?

Why would it get more difficult? Standing, resting hands on ledges etc all sounds far more precarious than sitting down

Eh? You stand up to wipe, but then what is it you are describing that you do sitting down?

I sit and wipe although the toilet paper is always clean. There's never anything on it. I always assumed it was normal to not have poo around your bumhole after going to the toilet but then I read otherwise on mumsnet. I must have very dry poo!
Op do you have mobility issues as tou say it hurts to do it sitting down and you have to hold on even when standing?

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 31/03/2025 11:05

I stand. Always have done. Once or twice I've tried sitting but I can't reach properly.

sweetpickle2 · 31/03/2025 11:06

Surely you need to be sat for your bumcheeks to be sufficiently spread?

Sincerely, I also did not realise we were supposed to wash our necks daily. Is this a common thing to do? Obviously if you shower you will wash your neck, and if you haven't showered because you shower every other day, then you would wash your face or have a strip wash at the sink, but is the neck somewhere that requires special attention like genitals, face, etc?!

Because typically people are not as mobile in old age, even if only marginally, and everything tends to be a bit stiffer

I am a stander, as are all my family. I guess it's how you're taught when you toilet train?! I genuinely didn't know sitting down to wipe was a thing.

NEVER?! I am shocked at this. A clean wipe, as it were, is probably a once in a fortnight occurrence for me

I’m a completely wrong way around wiper and never realised I was in my late 30s I think it may have been on mumsnet. My DH taught my boys the proper way, so just me being the family weirdo.

I’m assuming my mum never taught me? So for my life until my 30s I used to wipe from back to front for both always showered cleaned and used wipes but yes I did get UTIs growing up, clearly I never questioned the way I was taught.

Now I’m an automatic wrong way round and have to force myself and find I have to do a combination I have short arms and there is now way I can reach everywhere without a sit and stand combo!!

i also use the andrex flushable wipes and find that makes such a difference!

Do you have a particularly healthy diet? Or are you the opposite and supremely constipated with rock hard poos?

It's why white collars on shirts tend to get grubby - but was more of a 'thing' back in pre '90s when people tended to have baths rather than showers, and the neck was out of the water!

No I don't have mobility issues, hence my confusion about why it hurts me

Toilet bidet attachment (bum gun).

I sit down and use the bum gun and then a little toilet paper to dry off.

It's the best way imo. We wouldn't clean poop up off the floor just using a bit of dry paper, so it makes sense to add water into the mix.

It is amazing for keeping things fresh on my period or on a hot day. I wouldnt be without one now.

Xiaoxiong · 31/03/2025 11:09

It would never even occur to me to stand up. The fact that you have to use 4x as much loo roll and it's hard to get clean tells me that sitting down is much better!

I can also recommend a bum gun, or if you haven't got a bum gun plumbed in, a Happypo works well too - dry wiping is really not enough sometimes...!!

Upsetbetty · 31/03/2025 11:10

In all honesty @justtheonequestion1 I sit and lift one side of my butt up and reach around…I’m bendy enough. I also do use wet wipes for poo’s and no I don’t flush them.

KimberleyClark · 31/03/2025 11:10

Surprised we’ve got this far with no mention of bum guns and squirty toilets. There was a squirty toilet in my hotel room, with a lever to the side of the seat. I pressed it out of curiosity (not while sitting on the loo) and got drenched.

Xiaoxiong · 31/03/2025 11:10

@FeministUnderTheCatriarchy hurrah for the bum gun appreciation!!

I do eat well but not obsessively healthy. I'm not constipated or have painful poos. I have no idea why the paper is always clean. I've genuinely never had anything on the paper after a poo. I've been like this my whole life.

I would like one of these
