Dinged someones car door and drove away

I was out shopping with my friend and baby, she had driven us in her car. at a carpark, when we returned to our parking space the car beside us had parked over the line into our space on the side with the car seat, thinking I could still get my child in I opened our car door and unfortunately it did a small dinge, when I checked the other car there did not appear to be any dents but the smallest dot of white paint from my friends car was there. My friend said not to worry and she backed out of the space to let us get in safely (something we should have done from the start). There was no one in the other car and my friend drove off but now im worried we'll get in trouble or that someone will have saw us and report it? AIBU for worrying, friend doesn't seem bothered!

You are not being unreasonable to be worried about this. This was very wrong and if I’d have seen you I’d have left a note of your reg plate on the other car, and offered to be a witness.

HansHolbein · 08/03/2025 17:55

Someone did this to me in the carpark. Thankfully my dash cam caught it. I sent it to the police and my insurance company.

Gonk123 · 08/03/2025 17:55

Everyone does it, don’t worry.

Pootles34 · 08/03/2025 17:56

Shouldn't have parked over the line then should they!

No they bloody don’t. Don’t judge everyone by your own shitty standards

Even if there is no visible damage? I can completely understand if the car is damaged in any way but the police seems a bit too far for a bit of a non-event.

Yes they do - I have had it done to me a few times with no insurance left and I didn’t do anything. So keep your shitty quotes to me to yourself eh?!

They really don’t.

Someone did this to me in a multi storey and left damage. I contacted the parking company and they were able to give me details. I’m such a careful driver and was so angry.

Just because it’s happened to you doesn’t mean “everyone does it”. I certainly don’t.

Pinkelephant66 · 08/03/2025 18:03

A fleck of white paint. No, I would not leave my details. There’s no damage

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 08/03/2025 18:04

If you checked and there's no damage then you have nothing to worry about. The paintwork isn't so fragile that every little knock will cause damage.

No they don’t!!

And people wonder why those who don’t need the parent and baby spaces park in them. This is one of the reasons!

festivemouse · 08/03/2025 18:09

Leaving behind white paint is damage though, if you've left behind white paint from your friend's car on the other car / chipped the other cars paint down a level or two to show white.

What type of car is it? Sometimes they have onboard 360 cams that can record damage, or a dashcam. Personally I'd have left a note or waited a bit to see if anyone appeared!

AquaPeer · 08/03/2025 18:10

Sounds like something of nothing OP. You checked for damage and there was none so try and relax.

not sure how many people have dashcams pointed at the outside of their doors 😂 but I really wouldn’t worry.

after a few days you’ll start to relax and forget about it

But as a careful driver, you wouldn’t have parked your car into the neighbouring space though.

OP opened her door in her own space, but the other driver had poorly parked and their car was taking up space it should not have been. I agree OP should have been more careful, but the other driver doesn’t have a leg to stand on.

biscuitsandbooks · 08/03/2025 18:15

This is MN where people will tell you to report yourself to the police, but in reality this happens all the time and very few people do anything about it.

Ultimately it's your friend who will get in trouble if anything comes of it, as it's her car, so I would let her handle it.

Branleuse · 08/03/2025 18:16

If there was no damage then what would be the point?

Poonu · 08/03/2025 18:17

Tesla's have videos that switch on during impact

You got lucky, they shouldn’t have done that.

Namechanger385u4p · 08/03/2025 18:17

My car has been dinged (and i always stay within the lines). Annoying but just one of those things imo... im careful not to ding anyone else though.

Grannywasafanny · 08/03/2025 18:25

It’s times like this I’m glad I have a Tesla

Totally agree with the other cat being over the line but at least leave a note!

A few people said that!

RickiRaccoon · 08/03/2025 18:37

Try not to worry about it. Honestly people have dented our car with doors and it's a little annoying but I sort of figure it's life and cars should be able to take small knocks and not remain pristine forever. The other person isn't going to come after you for a fleck of paint.
