Dinged someones car door and drove away

I was out shopping with my friend and baby, she had driven us in her car. at a carpark, when we returned to our parking space the car beside us had parked over the line into our space on the side with the car seat, thinking I could still get my child in I opened our car door and unfortunately it did a small dinge, when I checked the other car there did not appear to be any dents but the smallest dot of white paint from my friends car was there. My friend said not to worry and she backed out of the space to let us get in safely (something we should have done from the start). There was no one in the other car and my friend drove off but now im worried we'll get in trouble or that someone will have saw us and report it? AIBU for worrying, friend doesn't seem bothered!

I don’t know anyone who drives around with dents or dings either.

God, I don't know a single person who doesn't. But most people round here have second/third hand cars and drive them into ground, so a few dings and scrapes make absolutely no difference to anything.

Everyone does it, don’t worry.

No, only selfish fuckwits do this 😡

YouveGotAFastCar · 08/03/2025 20:23

How?

Maybe it depends where you live/drive around but I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t notice a new mark on their car. I don’t know anyone who drives around with dents or dings either.

You’d notice a tiny fleck of white paint? Seriously?

Itsmehiya · 08/03/2025 20:54

Not everyone does it- it’s so wrong! You should have left your details. Returned to my one year old car after a theatre performance last year and it was completely mashed with bits hanging off. £500 in excess i didn’t have and the cctv was no good. They were never caught.

Leave her details because she didn't cause any damage? Really?

Tattletail · 08/03/2025 21:07

The only time I have taken meticulous note of every teeny tiny dent and ding on a car has been when I've hired rentals.

As long as it wasn't a rental then I'm sure you will be ok.

Toomuchlemonade · 08/03/2025 21:11

Quite frankly, they should learn to park inside the lines. I hate it when people think they are so important that they can take up 2 spaces.

Ceebs85 · 08/03/2025 21:14

Some mumsnetters will make you paranoid you're about to serve time.

There was no damage. Id have probably taken a quick photo showing how badly they were parked and the lack of damage but it's done with no.

Moat people wouldn't notice a tiny fleck of paint on their car, and I kinda think if you're willing to park that badly you can't be that precious about it anyway

Gonk123 · 08/03/2025 17:59

Yes they do - I have had it done to me a few times with no insurance left and I didn’t do anything. So keep your shitty quotes to me to yourself eh?!

Assume you drive a banger and don’t care.

I drive a nice car and would be upset if someone dinged me and drove off. I would deffo follow up on it if I had the info. I’m also a careful driver

you have zero standards.

Well that’s a bit different to the situation here… it’s a fleck of paint I.e no damage

Alwayswonderedwhy · 08/03/2025 21:21

I wouldn't expect someone to leave their details for a tiny speck of paint. To be honest I wouldn't even notice anyway.

MermaidMummy06 · 08/03/2025 21:31

We often have people posting on local FB pages looking for witnesses to car park carnage. We've had someone back into us while at a local event, too. Dinged the bumper & damaged the boot. All they care about is getting away so they don't have to pay to repair your car.

It's infinitely better at my local supermarket now. They installed car park cameras to combat youth crime targetting people loading groceries into their cars. A bonus as my car hasn't been carelessly dinged once since they've been installed.

Lassango · 08/03/2025 21:33

Don't worry about, it accidents happen. A tiny dot of paint is not the end of the world.

Candledrip · 08/03/2025 21:33

They were parked over the line so effectively parked in your space. You needed to get your baby into the car. They wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

Lassango · 08/03/2025 21:35

Dragonfirestone · 08/03/2025 18:44

Also curious what you would put in a note in this situation? Hi I hit your door I dont see any damage except a fleck of paint sorry! Heres my mobile number?

Exactly. The note is either a waste of time or inviting the other party to try and swindle you out of money by creating a fictitious claim.

You had no need to leave a note.

Bogginsthe3rd · 08/03/2025 21:39

Most likely your "friend's" car will be caught by dashcam so if there is damage will go though insurance and be liable.

BellissimoGecko · 08/03/2025 21:43

Dragonfirestone · 08/03/2025 18:42

It wasnt a Tesla, it was all a bit overwhelming with a child crying and being in such a tight space, if I was on my own not sure how I would have gotten the baby in as I couldn't drive back like my friend did. The carpark is quite out in the open and facing a fast food restaurant so i dont know if anyone noticed, i definitely checked and there was no indents etc and looked around a few times to see if I could see anyone but we had to leave and my friend definitely didnt want to leave a note. I don't feel theres anything I can do now more worried if it's reported and one of us gets in trouble, but if we say we checked and there was no damage what would the Police do? My car has been properly dinged numerous times, never would I have even questioned it especially if I was parked over the line with a car with carseats in it

You'd have climbed in the other side with the baby, put the baby in the car seat, then climbed in from the passenger side to get into the driving seat? Surely?

Bimblebombzle · 08/03/2025 21:44

I think it's hard to comment without seeing a picture. I mean I've opened a door and touched someone's car but never looked to check because it was just a touch.

On the other hand I drove past my neighbours, car and there was a scraping sound. Checked later and I'd scraped paint off and my hub cap was covered in it. Left him a note...that was a £350 mistake but I did the right thing - we both agreed to just sort it between us and didn't get insurance involved.

Really?! What bits were falling off? Sounds very dramatic.

Magnastorm · 08/03/2025 20:13

If there was no visible damage then absolutely no need at all to leave a note. What would be the point?

If I came back to a note saying "hi, i touched your car, but it's fine", I would think someone had lost their mind a bit.

That happened to me once - somebody had left a note (in an empty TicTac box!) under my wiper and gave their contact details, except there was no noticeable damage at all.

To be honest, it really freaked me out - I'd have much preferred that they left well enough alone and hadn't bothered.

But that's like saying that, because you would report somebody to the police if they came up to you and deliberately smashed you in the face, you should also report them if they accidentally jostled you in a bus queue.

paradisecircus · 08/03/2025 22:09

I wouldn't have left details for this as it sounds like there was no damage.

Ebeneser · 08/03/2025 22:27

A stone chip does more damage, and no one gets those repaired.
If it was visibly dented then fair enough, details should have been left, but doesn't sound like it was and the other car owner probably won't notice and will have several other "dings" anyway.

NimbleTiger · 08/03/2025 22:28

Someone has just done that to me damaging my brand new car with a door 'ding' I'm livid I have reported to the police so that the CCTV can be checked. A simple note on my windscreen would have been appreciated but a hard luck I'll just drive off is unacceptable.

A fleck of white paint. No, I would not leave my details. There’s no damage

Yeah. Irrespective of the rights and wrongs, that mark will come off with a wet cloth.
