Dinged someones car door and drove away

I was out shopping with my friend and baby, she had driven us in her car. at a carpark, when we returned to our parking space the car beside us had parked over the line into our space on the side with the car seat, thinking I could still get my child in I opened our car door and unfortunately it did a small dinge, when I checked the other car there did not appear to be any dents but the smallest dot of white paint from my friends car was there. My friend said not to worry and she backed out of the space to let us get in safely (something we should have done from the start). There was no one in the other car and my friend drove off but now im worried we'll get in trouble or that someone will have saw us and report it? AIBU for worrying, friend doesn't seem bothered!

Everyone does it, don’t worry.

Even if they do, doesn't make it right FFS!!!

Everyone does it, don’t worry.

Not everyone does it. Arseholes do it and I suppose this thread is an opportunity for some of them identify themselves.

Just saying how annoying it is when people act like dickheads around cars.

It is, but there's a massive difference between deliberately damaging someone's car, and accidentally bumping the door and not causing any harm.

BobnLen · 08/03/2025 19:28

Someone scuffed my wheel arch, it obviously happened while it was parked, I haven't bothered to have it repaired as the cost isn't worth it as I generally keep cars for years. A lot of small dings happen in car parks.

No they bloody don’t. Don’t judge everyone by your own shitty standards

Thank you. No not everyone does it.

Could be worse. My friend got a lift in her pal’s new car the other week. Opened the passenger door to get out and a passing car took the thing right off its hinges 🙊

Even if she's a non-driver herself, somebody urgently needs to explain to your friend about the basic concept of mirrors - and how essential it is to check them before opening your door where anybody else could possibly be passing.

She's lucky it was a car passing, and the damage was only done to some pieces of metal. If it had been a cyclist or motorcyclist, they could very easily have been hospitalised or even killed because of her carelessness and negligence.

Huckyfell · 08/03/2025 19:33

I really look after my car, I try to change them at 5 years/100k. Carpark dents i detest so always park at the most distant place away from everyone. This person squeezed in next to you, over the line so obviously some duffer with no pride in their car, the fact you noticed and realised tells me you have awareness. Don't worry about it.

BobnLen · 08/03/2025 19:36

Someone pinched my wing mirror from outside my mums house, that was annoying but how brazen some people are. It was only Ford Fiesta but obviously someone had a broken one and didn't want to pay for a new one and swiped mine. I thought at first the mirror had been hit but it had been removed.

Someone did this to my car - its a lease car, there's a ding and paint chip. It'll cost me ££ to get it fixed. So, fg AH is what I call people who do this.

However, in your case, @Dragonfirestone if paint transfer was all there was on the other car, do not worry at all. That is not damage and can be wiped off. If they do report it though you'd need to prove there was no damage. Let's hope that doesn't happen. If it does ever happens again get a picture to show no damage. And yes, always make sure you've enough room to get in and out. It's one of the only things I envy Americans about - decent parking spaces!!!

MrBallensWife · 08/03/2025 20:02

Serves them right, maybe they should learn to park properly next time and not infringe into another's parking space.

Shade17 · 08/03/2025 20:04

I sincerely hope someone witnessed this and left the registration number for the owner of the other car.

BobnLen · 08/03/2025 20:09

I doubt anyone would have witnessed someone opening a car door and took any notice, it's not like if you see someone driving and bumping a car

I sincerely hope someone witnessed this and left the registration number for the owner of the other car.

Why? There was no damage.

Magnastorm · 08/03/2025 20:13

If there was no visible damage then absolutely no need at all to leave a note. What would be the point?

If I came back to a note saying "hi, i touched your car, but it's fine", I would think someone had lost their mind a bit.

sanityisamyth · 08/03/2025 20:14

I'd be livid if someone dinged my car. You should have left your details on their windscreen.

FiveTreeHill · 08/03/2025 20:16

If you park over the lines what do you expect to happen?

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. People opening their car doors against other cars is incredibly common, and if someone parks in a way that prevents you opening your door it's really their own stupid fault. No one is going to their insurance about someone opening their car door into yours.

Christ if I'd done this in my old job I'd be contacting my insurance every bloody day!

Leave her details for what, exactly? There wasn't any damage Confused

Even though there was no damage?

Literally no one has the time or is sad enough to write the insurance details of someone who opened their car door into the neighbouring car when it was parked over the line

Yes if OP had driven her car into another then fine. But some people need to get out more

Balloonhearts · 08/03/2025 20:19

Park like a twat and your doors get dinged. If he'd parked legally in the bay, he wouldn't have been knocked.

CassandrasCastle · 08/03/2025 20:20

You're fine OP

BCBird · 08/03/2025 20:22

Everyone doesn't do this

Anotherparkingthread · 08/03/2025 20:23

Yeah this isn't a big enough deal to do anything about. They would have a really really hard time proving any damage was done by the door, they could have got a ding anywhere. They aren't gonna go full forensic files and start comparing paint samples, nobody died lol. They shouldn't have parked over the line.

YouveGotAFastCar · 08/03/2025 20:23

BIossomtoes · 08/03/2025 19:05

If it happened to my car I wouldn’t even notice. I doubt most people would.

How?

Maybe it depends where you live/drive around but I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t notice a new mark on their car. I don’t know anyone who drives around with dents or dings either.
