Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

37 years and never, neither has DH

BrokenWing · 07/03/2025 18:33

38 years driving, ran out once when petrol gauge was faulty and was still showed 1/4 tank. It was terrifying as I was in busy traffic and had no idea what was happening.

It is a serious safety issue to run out of fuel, you can be fined and/or given penalty points for it. Completely irresponsible to let yourself get into that situation unless there was significant extenuating circumstances.

Highway code 97 - MUST - have sufficient fuel or charge for your journey, especially if it includes motorway driving

DisforDarkChocolate · 07/03/2025 18:36

14 years and never.

lazyarse123 · 07/03/2025 18:38

43 years and once. Dh 53 years never.
So A is correct.

Saveusernsme · 07/03/2025 18:40

Twice when newly driving as I didn’t have enough cash. Never since (over 20 years) but the tank is looking empty today!

SALaw · 07/03/2025 18:41

30 years and never ran out. Had an ex boyfriend who was a mechanic and also terrible with money who had ran out multiple times

WellyBellyBoo · 07/03/2025 18:41

Never in 20 years. DH never in 30 years.

mylittlekomododragon · 07/03/2025 18:41

42 years and never. Came very close a few weeks ago but that was because DC had borrowed my car and not filled up - I literally limped in to the forecourt with the range saying zero! Stern words were had!

CosyRoby · 07/03/2025 18:42

Never
Driving 28 years

Destiny123 · 07/03/2025 18:42

Maddy70 · 07/03/2025 18:43

Once years ago. Never again

RufustheFactuaIReindeer · 07/03/2025 18:44

I have never run out but to be fair dh fills the cars so I wouldn’t be the one who runs out

he has never run out either, we’ve been driving for 37 and 39 years…ish

Headache3 · 07/03/2025 18:45

I've run out once in almost 30years and I drive approx 40k per year.

If you've run out 4 times in 30 years it's not that much if you r driving over 40k a year, but if you only drive 5k.a year, then it's quite a lot imo :)

But it really doesn't matter at the end of the day!

businessflop25 · 07/03/2025 18:45

In a car with a reliable fuel gauge once in 15 years of driving.
And actually it wasn't really my fault as such. I had enough fuel to get me to the pumps which is where I was headed. Unfortunately I got stuck on the motorway for 5hrs as there was an accident. Eventually we were rerouted off the motorway and I didn't have enough fuel to go round the diversion having been sat in traffic. Fortunately the AA got me going pretty quickly!

In the yard truck with no working gauge - So often that we have a Jerry can in the back full for when we run out! It's a farm vehicle and rarely if ever leaves the farm.

YourWinter · 07/03/2025 18:46

Once, I’ve been driving 51 years.

Heating oil though…

PeppercornAnn · 07/03/2025 18:46

Me, 20 years, never.
DH, 25 years and once.

Msmoonpie · 07/03/2025 18:49

Never in 17 years. Came close a couple of times -when I was skint and didn’t know if I’d be able to make it with the money I had - I did.

The other was then I simply forgot -total idiot. The car told me I had 0 miles left. I made it to a petrol station.

TattiePants · 07/03/2025 18:53

Once in 33 years of driving. It was mid-late 90s and there were fuel restrictions (strikes?) at the time and I left it a bit too late to find a garage without huge queues!

Though don’t ask me how many times I’ve put petrol in a diesel car….

Myotherrideisabroom · 07/03/2025 18:54

12 years and never actually run out to a stop, but did get to a station as my fuel gauge literally said 0 miles. I had planned on going to the fuel station but ended up diverted to pick my brother up from work, which diminished the tank a bit quicker.....

Waterbaby41 · 07/03/2025 18:55

40 years and never run out. I'm on team A!!

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 07/03/2025 18:57

There are occasionally valid reasons to run out of fuel.

I've run out once because I was in a 1965 Beetle which had no fuel gauge.

I've also run out once because my car's fuel gauge was working incorrectly. Not long after that the manufacturer issued a software fix for that model because of the problem.

I very very very nearly ran out during the fuel crisis in 2000. I had to abandon my car on a side street and take a train home.

PyongyangKipperbang · 07/03/2025 18:57

25 years, never.

Trolllol · 07/03/2025 18:58

Never

smallchange · 07/03/2025 18:59

Never run out in 35 years of driving, but did once have a momentary lapse in concentration at the petrol pump and put a few litres of diesel in instead of petrol which was probably more annoying in terms of having to explain to the garage, call the AA, get my tank siphoned and of course then pay for both the diesel and petrol.

WingsofRain · 07/03/2025 19:02

Once in 45 years.
