Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

Technically never....but I had a car once that at a certain level if I parked nose downhill, it wouldn't register the fuel level.
Twice that happened!

But I was technically never "out of fuel" , on the flat I had 10/15 miles in the tank.

nocoolnamesleft · 07/03/2025 19:03

34 years and not yet. I've never driven a car that told me the mileage left, just the basic dial.

I ran out once when I was young on a dark country lane

I was petrified

I've never run out again

I tend to refill when I get to half a tank

I get anxious at a quarter full

This is counterproductive as the fuel burn rate increases after half a tank due to the added weight of all the liquid!

TheDevilWearPrimarni · 07/03/2025 19:07

Never.
Driving 35 years.

samarrange · 07/03/2025 19:08

Social scientist here: Under almost any reasonable definition of what counts as an "opportunity to run out", 1 time in 25 years is not statistically different (i.e., it could very well be random chance) from 4 times in 30 years. I can show my working if anyone is interested (no? good 😂).

However, this probably shows why we shouldn't always rely on statistics. Most people never run out, and those who do almost certainly get very cautious about making sure it doesn't happen again. 4 times in a lifetime shows that the person is more than a little poorly organised.

I’ve only ran out once and it was my ex husbands car, he told me “don’t worry there’s definitely enough to get you home”!

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 07/03/2025 19:08

43 years and never run out. I don’t think dh has either. If he has then it’s more than 32 years ago!

Midlifecrisisxamillion · 07/03/2025 19:09

Been driving over 20 years and never run out of petrol.

TheDevilWearPrimarni · 07/03/2025 19:09

DH ran out of petrol on holiday once because the hire car had an inaccurate fuel gauge. It said 1/4 full when it had actually run out. Luckily we were in a large town at the t8me but the hire company had to deliver some fuel to us.

DonttouchthatLarry · 07/03/2025 19:10

Never in 37 years.

TheAmusedQuail · 07/03/2025 19:11

Once, in a car I wasn't used to, with an indicator that didn't register as low as the tank obviously was.

I've been paranoid about every running out again since then and rarely go below 1/4 of a tank.

WooleyMunky · 07/03/2025 19:13

35 years and never.
If they didn't put a gauge and a warning light in then YANBU.
If you have ever run out of fuel in a vehicle with a gauge and a warning light then you are hopelessly BU.

WonderingWanda · 07/03/2025 19:13

25 years and have never run out of fuel. I think modern computerised petrol gauges are a bit more unpredictable, always changing the miles left so it's hard to compare.

BlumminFreezin · 07/03/2025 19:14

15 years of driving and it's happened once...I'd only been driving a year though. Awful place too, totally blocking half a junction.

I called the AA 🙈😂 Thought the car was actually kaput and didn't identify the tank was empty. Waited two hours for them to turn up and I must have looked as dense as I actually was because the first thing the guy did was test the fuel tank 😂 He topped me up with a fivers worth of petrol and was very unimpressed 😂😂

stanleypops66 · 07/03/2025 19:15

25 years driving and never ran out. I've come close though.

Notateacheranymore · 07/03/2025 19:15

25 years since I passed my DT (second attempt if it matters), and I’ve never run out of fuel. In fact, my current car - a 14 plate Peu 107 is less tech advanced than my previous one - an 05 plate Renault Megane cabriolet - so it doesn’t have the “miles left” infor that the Meg had. It has a 6 bar fuel gauge and the first drop to 5 bars takes a lot longer than dropping from 2 bars to 1. I have no idea of the amount of petrol I have at 1 bar. I never let it get that low, as I’m paranoid about running out of fuel. Filled up on Wednesday, with about 1 1/2 bars left, I reckon.

Bleachbum · 07/03/2025 19:15

Almost 30 years. Never run out. I don’t think DH has either. I don’t really understand how you can run out with modern cars. What with all the lights and beeps and warnings as soon as there’s less than 50 miles or so worth left in the tank.

Tiredtiredtiredachey · 07/03/2025 19:16

Once in 20 years and in my defence that was because the petrol station I had aimed for was unexpectedly closed. I broke down as I was in the road indicating into the other petrol station. Two helpful police officers who happened to be passing pushed me to the pump!

SardinesOnGingerbread · 07/03/2025 17:24

To be fair, if you're going to let a 10 year old and an eight year old borrow your car, that's what's going to happen.

Lol... 10 years driving, 8 years driving.

ColourBlueColourPurple · 07/03/2025 19:18

I've been driving 12 years. I've run out once but been down to '0 miles left' numerous times. I do get a good few miles out of '0 miles' though.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 07/03/2025 19:20

I've run out once. 12 yrs driving

JustMeHello · 07/03/2025 19:21

I've got close sometimes, when i've been in remote places, but in 25 years, never actually run out.

twilightcafe · 07/03/2025 19:21

Once in 30+ years of driving.
And I was on my way to the petrol station!
But lesson learned. I have never done it again.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 07/03/2025 19:22

Driving more than 30 years, never run out. I get a bit twitchy about it - being rural means you need to calculate that you have enough petrol to get home and make it back out to the nearest petrol station.

Whateverwhateverever · 07/03/2025 19:22

Thirty years.
3 times I think.
