Running out of petrol

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

47 years driving and I've run out of petrol once, when I was 17, because the fuel gauge in my clapped-out 1966 Mini broke. It said I had nearly half a tank left when it was empty. Fortunately it broke down within sight of a petrol station and a nice man helped me push it there (and then expected me to go for a drink with him to say thank you).

I thought your post was going to end ‘ Dear reader, I married him !!’

Driving 15 years...never run out

AngelicKaty · 07/03/2025 18:11

30 years and never run out.

Yep…

Floatlikeafeather2 · 07/03/2025 18:14

Me, 44 years of driving - never. Husband, 52 years of driving - never. Believe me, over the years we've had several cars with unreliable fuel gages . It teaches you to be sure in your mind that you've got at least as much fuel in the tank to take you where you need to go.

Astrabees · 07/03/2025 18:15

Once, in 51 years of driving. This was because the digital display of how many miles left in the tank was defective. I was ver pissed off as it was a new Volvo.

4FoxxSake · 07/03/2025 18:16

25 years once... My fuel guage broke! 🤣

Notimeforit · 07/03/2025 18:17

Once, with a faulty fuel gauge. Having said that, 4 times in 30 years doesn't seem particulary awful to me.
Just adding that to me 'unreliable' is a gauge you know to be a bit flakey, 'faulty' is one that's broken and you didn't know. So I thought I'd got about quarter of a tank, and I hadn't. 😅

Throughthebluebells · 07/03/2025 18:18

45 years and have never run out although I do always wait until it is in the red before I fill up.

ThisUsernameIsNowTaken · 07/03/2025 18:18

Once in 27 years.

MyDeftDuck · 07/03/2025 18:18

Driving for 53 years and have never ever run out of fuel. Quarter full tank was always considered to be empty and that's the time to re-fuel.

Jaxhog · 07/03/2025 18:18

Me, 40 years and never run out.
DH, 45 years and run out twice.

PinkiOcelot · 07/03/2025 18:19

35 years and never have.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 07/03/2025 18:19

Never in 30 years and now we have an EV and never run out of charge either.

Onlyvisiting · 07/03/2025 18:20

Never in 20 years. There is a handy gauge in the front of rhe car.......

I live rurally and vehicle is essential for our business, so possibly makes less inclined to push it to the limit as the nearest garage is abt 5 miles away.

CrushingOnRubies · 07/03/2025 18:21

12 years and never. Close once but managed to get to petrol station in time

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 07/03/2025 18:23

40 years and never run out. I have managed to get home on the vapour a couple of times though. 😂

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 07/03/2025 18:23

42 years, never run out.

TheMeasure · 07/03/2025 18:23

45 years of driving. Have never run out.
Had a very lucky near-miss once, and glided onto the forecourt on fumes but got away with it.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 07/03/2025 18:24

Driving 33 years, never run out of fuel!

Our recent cars tell us exactly how many miles are left, I am cautious so rarely go below a quarter of a tank anyway! Harks back to the days when I had old cars and you really couldn’t rely on the gauge!

Vanfan · 07/03/2025 18:25

Only once in 30+ years .
And that was because DH had messed about with the gauge float and replaced it incorrectly. So the fuel gauge on the dashboard showed 1/2 full when it was running on fumes.
Okay... it needed to be taken out because I had put the wrong fuel in and the tank had to be cleaned . So I couldn't pull his leg about it sadly.

TheAlertCrow · 07/03/2025 18:26

Ran out once in 20 years of driving, was at traffic lights on a major busy road, I was mortified!

DrivingandInsurance · 07/03/2025 18:30

37 years and twice. First time I was 6 months pregnant and had just come back from a business trip and got caught in a queue of traffic due to accident and ran out. The second time was my last day at work before going on maternity leave….. a theme perhaps.

TheNinny · 07/03/2025 18:31

once overseas 20 years ago. I was in a hurry and wanted to leave a city due to bad weather - i lived about 30 mins drive away. ran out with my motorway exit in site. friend came with petrol canister and it got me to the next garage. Felt really stupid but i was funny. Never happened since and still don’t trust the you can drive ‘ 50 miles on E” saying….

Pinkypup · 07/03/2025 18:31

Driving 25 years and never run out…came close a couple times. But never actually ran out!
