Help! I've broken the toilet lid in a hotel!

Boxingshibes · 06/03/2025 16:34

I've managed to break the lid of the toilet of the hotel I'm staying in. Anyone done anything like this and how much will I be charged? I'm too scared to ask them.
My hotel stay is paid for by work so they may charge the work card.
I could probably pay up to £75 but I don't get paid till next week. Argh!!
Anyone done anything similar?

Unless you broke it by jumping up and down on it, they probably won't charge you. I would expect to tell them the toilet was broken and for them to send someone up to fix it.

Teenagerantruns · 06/03/2025 16:37

Just call reception, tell them the toilet lid is broken and they will fix it? Why would you be charged?

SometimesCalmPerson · 06/03/2025 16:37

How did you break it? If it was a reasonable accident then as long as you’re honest then they should be good willed about it and let it go. If you were doing something obviously stupid, then you should pay.

WilmaTitsDrop · 06/03/2025 16:38

You should probably tell us how you broke it?

Boxingshibes · 06/03/2025 16:42

I sat heavily and leaned back and the lid cracked. I've no idea how i managed to do it. But I'm scared I can't afford it.

I'd phone to reception and put in a complaint that you almost injured yourself on their faulty toilet seat. Most toilet seats don't break when you sit on them, so there must have been something wrong with the seat.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/03/2025 16:45

I'd act like I was almost injured. Toilet seats/lids shouldn't break upon a person using them correctly. So it broke. You didn't break it.
Tell them to please replace it asap as it's a health and safety hazard.

This.

Managed to crack a glass shower screen and they were more concerned about possible injury than charging me.

SometimesCalmPerson · 06/03/2025 16:50

Tell them it broke when it was used, because that’s the truth, and they’ll say sorry and fix it. They won’t make you pay.

Ididntsaybanana · 06/03/2025 16:52

Phone reception. They won't charge you, they will be more concerned about the risk of injury and a bad review.

ScottBakula · 06/03/2025 16:53

Go to reception ( don't phone down ) and ask to speak to the duty manager .
Speaking to them face to face will likely get a better response.

It was a accident, those things happen.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 06/03/2025 16:54

I wouldn't make any fuss, just tell the receptionist the toilet seat's broken. They won't launch an investigation to find out what happened, they'll just replace it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 06/03/2025 16:55

Wouldn’ t worry, it happens. Wear and tear, very much doubt you’ll be charged. Unless you’re the hulk and ripped it off when room service was late? 😁

Annettecurtaintwitcher · 06/03/2025 16:58

It’s just normal wear and tear to them I imagine. Tell them it is broken, no need to apologize or explain really. It’s not like you have trashed the entire room.

I think it's unlikely they will charge you.

I realise it's none of my business, but I have to admit I'm confused as to how you are in presumably a fairly senior role at work but don't have the funds to cover a broken toilet seat.

TheFlyingHorse · 06/03/2025 17:12

Just tell reception and they'll replace it. There's no need to make a fuss or lie about being injured. This stuff happens all the time in hotels, they're unlikely to charge you. DH works in a hotel and these incidents are a daily occurrence.

QuickPeachPoet · 06/03/2025 17:13

Unless you were misusing it (and don't want to imagine what you would need to do to misuse it) this is not your fault.

Redheadedstepchild · 06/03/2025 17:16

I very much doubt that you'll be charged. I used to work in hotel housekeeping and broken toilet seats were an almost daily occurrence.

At least you didn't burn holes in the carpet drunkenly cigarette smoking or throw the fag ends out of the window to land on the glass atrium roof of the restaurant or...

5foot5 · 06/03/2025 17:16

They won't charge.
DH once accidentally broke a glass shelf in a hotel bathroom. They sent someone up straight away to clear away the glass and replaced the shelf during our stay. No hint of a charge.

Roselilly36 · 06/03/2025 17:37

Things like this happen all the time in hotels, they will fix it, you won’t be charged.

Ohapal · 06/03/2025 17:40

Go to reception, be very polite, apologise, explain you just sat on the toilet normally and they will very likely get it fixed immediately and not charge it. I have had this happen (we broke a bed in a hotel room - it was old and not up to much and they didn't mind, replaced it immediately, no charge!)

beadystar · 06/03/2025 17:49

The shower head attachment fell off the shower wall at a hotel I stayed in. They were so worried I'd complain about injury! We got upgraded to a suite with a complimentary bottle of fizz. Just ring down and say it broke, it's not like you were tap dancing on it.

snowflakelake · 06/03/2025 17:57

They aren't going to charge you OP.
Just ring down to reception, explain it is broken and ask for a replacement.
It is simply wear and tear.

lemontova · 06/03/2025 18:23

I did this a couple of years ago. Had been a bit drunk and not my most graceful self and sat down weirdly. Went down to reception next morning absolutely mortified and confessed and offered to pay for the damage. They laughed and said not to worry and just took a note of the room so that housekeeping could replace it. Don't worry, just tell them it broke x

TiredEyes25 · 06/03/2025 18:24

They won't charge you. These things happen
