Help! I've broken the toilet lid in a hotel!

Boxingshibes · 06/03/2025 16:34

I've managed to break the lid of the toilet of the hotel I'm staying in. Anyone done anything like this and how much will I be charged? I'm too scared to ask them.
My hotel stay is paid for by work so they may charge the work card.
I could probably pay up to £75 but I don't get paid till next week. Argh!!
Anyone done anything similar?

I would just say it’s broken and I nearly fell off the toilet because of it, they won’t mind fixing it for you

B1indEye · 06/03/2025 20:00

That's mad, what exactly did you say to them, did you offer to pay?

I think they saw you coming, no way would I have paid for something like that, it's not like you deliberately damaged it. I'm surprised they even had a way to ring it up on their system

biscuitsandbooks · 06/03/2025 20:01

I can't believe you paid.

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 06/03/2025 20:33

I’m genuinely astounded that they charged you, and that you willingly paid!
Can you summarise the conversation OP?

Oblomov25 · 06/03/2025 21:10

You paid? At least it was only £30 I guess.

OnTheBoardwalk · 06/03/2025 21:20

I checked into a room that had a broken lamp that had obviously been ignored by housekeeping. I went to reception thinking they'd blame me and they were massively grateful I’d told them so they could get it sorted. That was the only thing they were bothered about

i can’t believe they charged you for it. Contact Hilton customer services, they’ve been fantastic with me for issues I’ve had in the past

caffelattetogo · 06/03/2025 21:28

Some modern toilet seats are terrible quality. The one that came with our toilet was so flimsy we immediately replaced it with a proper wooden one so sturdy you could dance a can-can on it. The other one would have cracked if you say on the lid, no doubt.

Boxingshibes · 06/03/2025 21:28

I always worry with work that in going to be charged for stuff. I get a 30 meal allowance and hotel paid for.

Unfortunately I never have much spare money. Times where I need to get a taxi to and from work makes a difference to me.
I make good money but 40% goes on rent and then bills and looking after dd1 dd2 and dh who is disabled and unable to work

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 06/03/2025 22:14

Don't tell me, you offered to fit the new seat as well as pay for it.

I can't believe they even got into a conversation with you about a wear and tear item breaking, it should've just been a report to maintenance to replace the toilet seat.

ChompandaGrazia · 06/03/2025 22:23

I’m staggered they charged you. It’s a toilet seat, they break.

OnTheBoardwalk · 06/03/2025 22:27

Did you pay cash or card? Please don’t let them get away with this. Again Hilton customer services might get back to you before check out

Lesina · 06/03/2025 22:29

You won’t be charged at all. If you want mention it to reception when you leave or don’t. It doesn’t matter. Hotels deal with much worse all the time. Ex hotel GM here. You will be fine :)

Op has already been charged

DSquared · 06/03/2025 22:40

Did you offer to pay? How did they even come up with £30? Doesn't sound right.

BobnLen · 07/03/2025 06:55

You didn't say I broke the toilet did you because it could have been the previous occupants.

Sparrow7 · 07/03/2025 06:58

It was likely already broken my someone else.

DinoLil · 07/03/2025 07:22

WTF??!!!! They actually charged you??? That's appalling.

Caspianberg · 07/03/2025 07:31

I can’t believe they charged you! It’s a huge company

Fyi I haven’t ever charged guest at our holiday rental for any breakages. I mean if it was obvious trashed then it’s different, but stuff in general just gets broken accidentally

I only ask that people let me know asap, as then I have time to get a replacement or repair scheduled ( either for them or the next guests). Some things have to be ordered or I have to wait until weekend to drive to next city to get. I have day to day basics as spares anyway so if someone say the kettle or wine glass broke I could just replace that day for them.

Bjorkdidit · 07/03/2025 07:34

I'm wondering if some hotel staff member has just got themselves a little cash bonus courtesy of the OP.

Surely if it was chargeable they'd send the bill afterwards once it's repaired. And a large chain would only charge if someone has been deliberately negligible, eg trashed their room in a drunken rampage.

OP it sounds like you need to be a bit more assertive. Surely you would have just said that it broke and could someone fix it please? The time to talk about paying for it, or not, would be if they asked you to after it had been repaired, whereas it sounds like you've just offered money upfront and could have been taken advantage of.

FiveShelties · 07/03/2025 07:37

I am amazed they charged you. I would have just said it was broken and could they replace it. How did they decide it was 30 pounds?

repellingmnvipers · 07/03/2025 07:42

Where are you shop

CanOfMangoTango · 07/03/2025 07:44

Can you explain what exactly happened in the conversation because if I had broken a toilet seat just by sitting on it I wouldn't be entertaining a charge!

What did you say to them? Did you imply it was your fault? Because it wasn't, it was obviously wear and tear of the hundreds of bums that have sat on it.

Very sorry you've been landed with a bill. Can you complain & get details of the general manager because this really isn't right.

Mabiscuit · 07/03/2025 07:51

It sounds like you were scammed. I don't think you should have had to pay.

StarlightLady · 07/03/2025 07:55

They should be insured for such things. Plus loo seats should be fit for purpose. Simply say on checkout the toilet seat was broken.

Hilton Hotels arent going to be claiming on insurance for a £30 (or however much it actually cost) toilet seat. That's not a factor and it appears that saying the seat broke was enough to trigger a charge but @Boxingshibes we need to know verbatim as possible how the conversation went
