Help! I've broken the toilet lid in a hotel!

Boxingshibes · 06/03/2025 16:34

I've managed to break the lid of the toilet of the hotel I'm staying in. Anyone done anything like this and how much will I be charged? I'm too scared to ask them.
My hotel stay is paid for by work so they may charge the work card.
I could probably pay up to £75 but I don't get paid till next week. Argh!!
Anyone done anything similar?

Just tell them and they will replace it and probably will be very apologetic.

I'd phone to reception and put in a complaint that you almost injured yourself on their faulty toilet seat. Most toilet seats don't break when you sit on them, so there must have been something wrong with the seat.

Not sure about this strategy as this is an admission of sitting on the device, which would be fairly embarrassing.

LizardQueeny · 06/03/2025 18:30

It shouldn't break with normal use. Just tell reception it's broken. Don't offer to pay anything.

Flamingoknees · 06/03/2025 18:32

You won't be charged OP - just describe like you did here.
Not the point of the thread, but leaning back on the lid is a bit yuck - it gets splashed all the time on flushing.

Boxingshibes · 06/03/2025 18:41

Just been down to reception. I had to pay £30. Which is ok I guess. Word of warning don't break anything in a hampton by hilton. At least it wasn't more.
For those that asked even if you have a good job you can still be living paycheck to paycheck. I'm the sole earner at home and have to cover everything.

Bit surprised they charged you!

Your mistake was admitting you did it 😆

hopeishere · 06/03/2025 18:59

I'm amazed they charged you. Did you pay cash?

More fool you, I wouldn’t have paid for a faulty toilet seat which hundreds of people have used previously.

Hoppinggreen · 06/03/2025 19:03

They charged you?
I wouldn't have paid, I would have very politely told them to get lost

Worried861 · 06/03/2025 19:06

Did you really pay? It may have already been broken before you sat on it? Can't believe you paid.

Boxingshibes · 06/03/2025 19:07

I paid as i didn't want an uncomfortable discussion tomorrow when i check out the my work card won't cover. I'm actually very relieved I was imaging much more which I'd then have to ask someone to borrow money from (adhd brain)
Won't stay here again if I have to travel to here again. Don't know why I wasn't in the premier inn as its almost next door. Usually stay in a premier inn.

Did you offer outright to pay? Or did you tell them it was broken and they then said you needed to pay for it?

If the latter, that's absolutely ridiculous. If I were you, I'd post a review on every hotel site I could find, and complain that not only was their bathroom fittings faulty and dangerous, but they expected you to pay for it.

niadainud · 06/03/2025 17:09

I think it's unlikely they will charge you.

I realise it's none of my business, but I have to admit I'm confused as to how you are in presumably a fairly senior role at work but don't have the funds to cover a broken toilet seat.

Many people need to use all their income to pay their living costs.

How do you not know this??

ExtraOnions · 06/03/2025 19:12

I stay in hotel with work a lot, have had various accidents, and never been charged a thing.

LostMyLanyard · 06/03/2025 19:13

Oh god I feel your pain! I once slipped on the damp floor of a hotel bathroom (damp from the shower screen not doing its job and water leaking out everywhere whilst I was showering!)

I landed heavily on the toilet and managed to dislodge the entire toilet! The base cracked and water was spilling out everywhere...it was a nightmare!

Obviously I rang down to Reception and they sent up some maintenance person. Then tried to bill me for the damage...I declined to pay on the basis that their faulty screen caused me to slip, which culminated in not only the bathroom damage, but a split lip, huge lump on my head and a broken wrist. I may have mentioned suing for my own damages 😬

Honestly, I've reported damaged items a couple of times and no one has ever suggested paying.
I wouldn't have entertained it if they had suggested it.

Did you pay cash? This is the question.

Cyclebabble · 06/03/2025 19:23

Part of wear and tear. Call or go down to reception. Tell them you put the loo seat up or down and it has broken. They will get their maintenance person to fix before the next person in. Even if you did not report it I do not think they would charge you but let them know as a courtesy. Early on in my career I used to be based in some not so great hotels. In summer I was struggling to get a window to open so put a bit of force behind it. The whole window fell out and crashed to the floor, several stories below. I went down to reception and the guy just gave me a different key!

caffelattetogo · 06/03/2025 19:29

Was the issue that you sat on the closed lid, or did you just sit in the normal seat bit?

caffelattetogo · 06/03/2025 19:34

This reminds me of this thread, where the manufacturer wouldn't refund a cracked lid because it wasn't designed for sitting on, or some such

To think that you should be able to sit on a toilet seat lid? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/1018595-To-think-that-you-should-be-able-to-sit-on

Arcticrival · 06/03/2025 19:40

I'ts obviously cheap stuff. Just call reception say the toilet seat is broken and ask maintenance to repair/ replace.

That was you are acknowledging issue, not admitting it or doing a runner.

These things happen and hotels factor damage in. It's not like you've got pissed and smashed the room up. Stop worrying :)

Movinghouseatlast · 06/03/2025 19:45

I can't believe they asked you to pay! All you did was sit on it. I'm really shocked.

I love Hampton By Hikton, I used to stay in one twice a week gor 3 years. Always very clean and a nicer atmosphere than Premier Inn I thought.

steff13 · 06/03/2025 19:49

Last time I was at a hotel I was waiting for the valet to bring my car around, and a woman was speaking to the manager about how her husband had broken the shower. He broke the glass door off the shower; he broke the little shelf that was towards the bottom of the shower stall that I think you're supposed to use to put your foot on when you're shaving your legs off the wall; and made a hole in the wall of the bathroom. The manager assured her they wouldn't have to pay. I doubt you will have to pay for a broken toilet seat.

Oops, I should have read the whole thread. That's crazy that they charged you.
