Friends staying here and poorly

On the 13th Feb I had a stomach bug. As did my daughter. recovered. Then caught a cold. On the 21st Feb we got a weird achy bug. I had a bad stomach with it (diarrhoea) she vomited. We sort of had dodgy stomachs for 4 days.

Friends staying here temporarily. They should be moving into their house next week. They've been stopping in hotels but I said they could stay here Tuesday and Wed to save money. They've started throwing up tonight. But they've blocked my sink with vomit and it's also gone allover my bathroom bin.

I feel really pissed off. I can smell sick and I have no way of unblocking the sink as i wasnt expecting them to not reach the toilet.. I dont want to catch it. I have worked 6 days out of the last 7 and I'm going in Friday morning too. So tomorrow I wanted to go to my parents for a couple of hours and do xyz. I was relying on this friend to be up and productive early. If I have anymore sick days I'll probably end up with a warning. Plus I really really don't want a sickness bug again.

I don't know why I'm writing. Just so miffed!

I guess they can't help being ill but I would expect an adult to be able to clean up their sick. That's really unpleasant to leave your sink blocked up.

I know they've thrown up in the bathroom sink and it's all splashed around the edges. My toothbrush will be going in the bin. Just can't believe they didn't clean it. It's the only bathroom I have.

LittlePudding1 · 06/03/2025 00:21

Are they still at your house? If so, have you told them they need to clean up after themselves?

notapizzaeater · 06/03/2025 00:31

As adults pass them the bleach and gloves and let them get on with it.

I was once violently sick in my bosses bathroom overnight by breakfast you could have eaten your food off the floor, it was scrubbed within an inch of its life because I'm an adult and responsible for this sort of shite !

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/03/2025 00:34

Toilet plunger for the sink.
Rubber gloves and a mask if you end up having to clean.
Decent friends would buy you an expensive bottle of wine and a food hamper as a thank you and apology.
(I would)
They likely feel bad for passing on the bug.

Thissucks125 · 06/03/2025 00:38

I don't have a plunger.
I am so fed up. Is it possible to get 3 stomach bugs in a month?

OP posts:
Sleepington · 06/03/2025 00:39

The bug is either going around or they caught it from you so I don't suppose they can help being sick anymore than you could help it when you were ill.

How sick are they e.g. are they in bed barely able to move?
Otherwise give them bleach.

I had it between 2 and 3 weeks ago now. I dunno if it would be me as they've been around me last week.

They are asleep but probably not feeling up to bleaching.

I'll get over it. Just feeling sorry for myself as they don't have anything sorted for tomorrow and I had things to do and wanted my house back.

I do feel sorry for them.

Shit luck. Literally. 🤦‍♀️💐

I struggle to understand how an adult can’t make it to the toilet to be sick?! Assuming they’re not - elderly, frail, disabled, blind and the rest of the exemptions before someone pipes up)

You know when you’re going to be sick because you can feel the build up, your mouth gets watery etc… and I wouldn’t even puke in my own sink (and I have 5) because it’s disgusting as others have to use them to clean teeth, wash face, hands etc.. when you’re sick in the toilet it gets flushed away and is more hygienic at least.

Id be fuming as well OP as there’s no need and to not clean it up 🤢🤢

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/03/2025 00:51

Ever had a bad bout of noro virus? ...
It is the bloody worst (as in exploding at both ends. Sorry to be explicit).

Sleepington · 06/03/2025 00:51

Your house back? They're only staying two nights though?

They are probably mortified.

Leave the bleach out for them. I'm sure they'd prefer to clean up themselves than have you do it. Brush your teeth in the kitchen for tonight/tomorrow morning.

I remember, in my early 20s, staying a night while babysitting for someone. I suddenly got my period, a heavy period, and completed stained the bed. Many, many years later, I still burn with embarrassment when I think about it.

user1492757084 · 06/03/2025 01:06

Provide plunger and bleach.
Expect them to stay longer, and clean up.

Give guests a plastic bucket each and a roll of paper towel, toilet paper, rubbish bin bag, bottles of water.
Do you have any travel sick bags? They are fabulous.

Depending on how well you cleaned after, and what with OP, if it was some kind of norovirus you had, they could have caught it off you - it can survive on surfaces for 2 weeks or so afterwards and it doesn't require many particles of the virus for you to contract it either.

They should have cleaned up after themselves though - in a pinch I have double bagged a wastepaper-type rubbish bin and used that for being sick into ifI couldn't make it to the loo in time, or if I was on the loo and having it come out both ends at the same time. I've had noro multiple times, but never would I resort to being sick in the sink!

TwinklyNight · 06/03/2025 01:11

Leave them stuff to clean up, paper towels, disinfectant. Can you buy or borrow a plunger too. Maybe a pail/container in case they need to vomit more.

Allshadowlylined · 06/03/2025 01:14

This is my absolute worst nightmare. Shit I could take but vomit no.

I've had norovirus and campylobacter and never not made it to the toilet

Probably because I remember my dad fuming with me when I threw up in the sink as a child (separate toilet, the sink was closer!)

2021x · 06/03/2025 01:45

I had norovirus once, the worst diarrhoea and then I threw up on the hour every hour for 8 hours.

I guess they used the sink because both of them got it at the same time i.e. one on the toilet. Even when I was sick I was able to clean it up each time and then crawl back to bed.

I would also recommend ice lollies as they melt in the mouth and there is sugar and water because the de-hydration is what gets you.

Fourpintsoffullfatplease · 06/03/2025 01:46

Go wake them up and tell them to clean it

Really? I got a vomiting bug a few months ago and I felt really unwell but didn’t know I was going to be sick till it overwhelmed me whilst I sat on sofa - I managed to get it all over the playmat on floor, that was best I did, avoid soft furnishings. No way was I making it out of the room! And no way was I in a fit state to clean it up. I spent next 10 hrs or so shivering in bed next to a bucket.
@Thissucks125 youve been sick recently try to have some compassion. This is a shit situation but not your friends fault

Give her a bucket with freaking bleach and tell you don’t do peoples vomit. And if she refuses throw all shit outside and tell her to get lost. I hope it’s cold and rainy there, the piece of garbage

That’s tough crap. How dare a grownup expect anyone else to clean their vomit. Absolutely disgusting.

Ellepff · 06/03/2025 01:51

Awful awful luck.

my friends and I had the conversation months ago about if you always make it to the bathroom and it was 50/50. Those of us who don’t usually tote around a bowl or bucket if we’re sick. It doesn’t aleays work. Last time I got sick tbe first puke hit as I was running to the toilet and went all over the doorway, underside of door…. Disaster which I had to clean.

I’d expect them to clean or else apologize profusely, but I’d also give them supplies and an extra night’s stay. I’d also have a pity party for myself and be rubbing hand sanitizer and bleach around like it was 2020.

Devianinc · 06/03/2025 01:52

She should pay for a cleaning service if me lady was so ill. Ewwwww. Is she not embarrassed

I doubt the friends expect her to clean it. They are just horrifically sick and unfortunately for OP there is no second bathroom and a plugged sink so not much option.
