Am I the only person who doesn’t get Tenby?

Obviously no offence intended. Different strokes for different folks.

So we have some Canadian cousins coming over in Sumer and as an extended family we are putting together an itinerary. Everyone has said we need to do a typical seaside town. It is pretty much unanimous that everyone in the family chat has decided Tenby is the #1 choice.

Don't get me wrong the actual landscape was outstanding. But I found Tenby a little bit drab given how popular it was. It was heaving which I didn’t mind but I really do not get the hype.

I went a few years ago in Summer and was expecting to find this absolute gem and it was fine. I enjoyed some of the bakeries.

Am I the only person who doesn’t get it?

I don't get thread titles that start with 'i dont get', surely we all have different tastes?

purser25 · 24/02/2025 17:48

What about visiting the Isle of Wight lots of lovely beaches.

Frowningprovidence · 24/02/2025 17:48

Well I like Tenby a lot

But if margate was an option on the table, id go round the corner to Broadstairs. You get sand, Punch and Judy, trampolines and chips on the jetty plus the beach doesn't have a road behind it.

Covidwoes · 24/02/2025 17:52

@ParaParaParaphrase I completely agree about Blackpool. Absolutely horrible place.

OohKittens · 24/02/2025 17:54

Hate the place, Llandudno is so much nicer. I live in Pembrokeshire (always have) and the place is so overrated.

I’ve visited a lot of the beaches in Pembrokeshire. They are stunning.

I personally wanted to do something like Margate or Weymouth - a proper classic seaside holiday to me. But I think my family think those places aren’t “naice” enough to take visitors. Hence why Tenby was suggested. And I personally just didn’t think it was exceptional as many would have you believe.

Edited

FWIW I hated Margate for similar reasons. Everyone raved about it, but my DP and I went down for the day and found it miserable. Nothing to do except eat/drink.

Booooooom · 24/02/2025 18:00

I love Tenby, beautiful houses, lovely beaches, boat trips. Great for kids.
If you want to go shopping I can see how it doesn't quite fit the bill.
We've eaten in various places in Tenby and Sandersfoot, but again all family friendly, not foodie places.
You've reminded me how much we liked it there, need to book to go again!

CerealPosterHere · 24/02/2025 18:02

I used to live just outside Tenby and while it’s pretty I don’t know there’s much to see/do there. Obviously as an 18yo I loved the pubs. There’s nice beaches around. I hate Caldey. Tenby is better than St David’s which is dull as anything and better than Blackpool for sure.

To be honest I find a lot of “nice” little seaside resorts quite shit……I don’t like Fowey or Falmouth either and people rave about them. Guess Falmouth has a few more shops. St Ives is nice enough.

Does it have to be in Wales? What about Blackpool?

i am presuming this is a joke....

RareMaker · 24/02/2025 18:05

Thought it was mediocre. Though everyone likes Southwold. It's boring and flat in my opinion

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 24/02/2025 18:08

Tenby is beautiful and quite rare as you don't need a car to access everything including it's stunning beaches. I took DD there without a car when she was little and we had the best time.

You could perhaps visit Broadhaven and Barafundle beaches for a little slice of heaven. Only a short drive away too

Come off it. It's hardly ghastly 🙄 Not to your taste maybe but certainly not ghastly

Ohmych · 24/02/2025 18:13

I do like Tenby but much prefer Barry.

Lol...I'm off to Barry tomorrow (I work for the council and my office is there).

I think people’s feelings about seaside towns are complex. If you have fond memories of childhood holidays there you’ll always be a bit rose tinted but if you only visited once when it pissed down and a seagull nicked your chips you’ll be understandably a bit down on it.

We visited Tenby on a whim once. It was unexpectedly beautiful weather and a weekday in term time so not heaving. I adored the beach, it looked almost Caribbean.

My favourite seaside town is Barmouth. It’s not the best one by far I’m sure but it’s where everyone in our town flocks to when it’s nice weather. Beach is lovely and there’s a mix of tacky shops and tasteful nonsense.

Well this is totally underwhelming isn’t it. What a drab place.

Well that's a lovely photo of a lovely bay to be sure, but what's the rest like?

I went to Dartmouth and Brixham recently because I'd seen lovely photos of certain aspects of both towns, all colourful fishermen's cottages tumbling down the hillside to the water's edge. Very romantic. When I got there I found both to be disappointingly shabby and run down and a bit seedy in parts. As was most of that area of Devon actually, compared to other parts I've visited.

See, I really like Falmouth and I LOVE Fowey.

PandorasJam · 24/02/2025 18:33

Most places ending in -by are in the north and east of England so I'm surprised to hear of one in west Wales.

What to scare the bejesus out of them 😂

Teado · 24/02/2025 18:38

I liked Barry when I went two years ago. The beach was great and the whole place was really clean, with friendly people. I had been there in around 1999 to visit a uni friend, and thought it was grotty so I was pleased to be proved wrong.

I don't get it either. Nice beaches but east coast England has some stunners and I like Padstow and the estuary myself. Tenby beach is lovely but the rest is a bit meh.

Blackpool is a disappointment now! If I was visiting a coastal town it would be Whitby!
