Am I the only person who doesn’t get Tenby?

Obviously no offence intended. Different strokes for different folks.

So we have some Canadian cousins coming over in Sumer and as an extended family we are putting together an itinerary. Everyone has said we need to do a typical seaside town. It is pretty much unanimous that everyone in the family chat has decided Tenby is the #1 choice.

Don't get me wrong the actual landscape was outstanding. But I found Tenby a little bit drab given how popular it was. It was heaving which I didn’t mind but I really do not get the hype.

I went a few years ago in Summer and was expecting to find this absolute gem and it was fine. I enjoyed some of the bakeries.

Am I the only person who doesn’t get it?

I never knew there was a "hype" about Tenby? 😂 I've never really heard anyone talk about it. When we go to wales it's the abersoch area but tbh once I'd been to Cornwall nowhere else has ever lived up to it (even though it's about a 6-7 hour drive for us).

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 24/02/2025 16:52

Well, I have never been to Tenby, but it is on my 'must visit' list now - thank you.

When I was a child we always used to spend a fortnight in Swanage, Dorset. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to visit it for a long time now, but it is still - and I expect always will be - my favourite seaside holiday resort. The whole of the Purbeck peninsular is lovely, including a visit to Corfe Castle, I wonder if it still has it's miniature village? I nearly forgot that Swanage also has a steam train that goes between Swanage and Corfe - it may go further than that now...

I hope you all have a lovely time wherever you go.

Titasaducksarse · 24/02/2025 16:53

Much prefer Dinbych y pysgod lol

It's funny isn't it how poles apart we can be as I don't get the allure of Cornwall at all and think there's multiple places I'd rather go first.

Holidaywarning · 24/02/2025 16:53

Gower is far more impressive, I think. I was disappointed with Tenby, we visited late spring and it was crowded and unimpressive.
Lots of out of the way beauty spots in Gower. I generally prefer rural to town though

TheignT · 24/02/2025 16:55

I always preferred Saundersfoot but I haven't been for a long time. A day in Tenby was nice but then back to Saundersfoot.

I do t get Cornwall either. I live in south Devon so it isn't even a long journey.

Saveusernsme · 24/02/2025 17:03

You didn’t do it wrong; it just wasn’t for you.

For me, St David’s and Solva are the most precious and beautiful places in the World. Many don’t. I’ve been be so lots of places and haven’t understood the hype.

Miyagi99 · 24/02/2025 17:06

I like it but there are far nicer Welsh seaside towns in north Wales, not Rhyl! I won’t mention on here in case they get overrun!).

ShodAndShadySenators · 24/02/2025 17:07

I haven't been to Tenby so don't have an opinion on it, I'm sure it's lovely though. What about Portmeirion, that's quite unique? If I was going to take visitors to a pretty Welsh seaside town, there's many that are attractive but Portmeirion is something else.

ParaParaParaphrase · 24/02/2025 17:13

Blackpool is an absolute dive. Second only to Rhyl. Absolutely filthy, horrible places. In both places we met aggressive groups of shirtless people smoking, drinking and yelling/hitting their children. We saw fights. It was really bad.

atthepinkponyclub · 24/02/2025 17:13

Went in the summer holidays and it didn’t feel that busy? I preferred it to places likes st Ives or padstow that are so so heaving and stressful.

ParaParaParaphrase · 24/02/2025 17:16

Llandudno is lovely. St Ives, Beaumaris, Looe, Hunstanton also great.

ParaParaParaphrase · 24/02/2025 17:17

St Ives horrendous in the summer!

fluffiphlox · 24/02/2025 17:18

What about Southwold?

I live in west wales and Tenby would not be my go to however it does have a lovely beach and stuff like Folly farm on the doorstep. I much prefer the Newport area further north and west but it is much less touristy really so it depends on what you want. Restaurants in Tenby are much better than they were however.

Absolutely this, I love north pembs.
But it's not the traditional British seaside some people love (why I don't know).

TheEllisGreyMethod · 24/02/2025 17:19

maudelovesharold · 24/02/2025 14:55

Does it have to be in Wales? What about Blackpool?

I don't think the people who like pembrokeshire would enjoy blackpool.

ViciousCurrentBun · 24/02/2025 17:22

There are lovelier beaches but if its a Seaside town you are after then Tenby or Scarborough are nice for that.

NefiBlw · 24/02/2025 17:23

Hey come on now @Miyagi99 , we know you are just saying Rhyl to make people think it's not the paradise we know it is.

Miyagi99 · 24/02/2025 17:26

Horrace · 24/02/2025 15:37

Nah, Tenby isn't for me either. Went there plenty as a kid but it's Cornwall every time for me now.

I don't really like Victorian towns though and that's what Tenby is. I prefer quaint fishing villages, piskies, pirates, pasties, cider and a Cornish accent.

Tenby is a medieval town, although popular in Victorian times, Llandudno is a classic Victorian seaside town as is Penzance and Falmouth. I think lots of the UK seaside destinations were made popular in Victorian times though.

Of Pembrokeshire (which we adore) St David's and Tenby are low on the list. We much preferred our day in Pembroke to St David's (castle fans though).

Much MUCH prefer the quieter beaches/towns.

Little Haven is my #1 - but I don't really want other people knowing about it so pretend it's horrible please Blush

This, basically. We had all our family holidays in Pembrokeshire growing up - Mum and Dad took us to Tenby once and we were all totally meh about it. But Pembrokeshire is gorgeous. Try Broadhaven South, West Angle or Little Haven / Broad Haven. All stunning and you don’t have to fight through hordes to walk around!

I would stay in Saundersfoot and visit Tenby.
Lovely beach, lovely small harbour village with good walks especially the coastal path through the tunnels and easier a condition to find with parking.

love Saundersfoot, I am half Welsh and went to Wales at least twice a year as a child and have been back many times as an adult. Such a small country and with so much beauty. The beaches on the Pembrokshire coast are breathtaking

Chuchoter · 24/02/2025 17:30

I live in Wales and drive through Tenby once in the summer. Don't bother stopping as it was heaving. Couldn't see the appeal at all.

Barafundle too.

We love both 🤷🏼‍♀️
They're very different of course 😂
