Am I the only person who doesn’t get Tenby?

Obviously no offence intended. Different strokes for different folks.

So we have some Canadian cousins coming over in Sumer and as an extended family we are putting together an itinerary. Everyone has said we need to do a typical seaside town. It is pretty much unanimous that everyone in the family chat has decided Tenby is the #1 choice.

Don't get me wrong the actual landscape was outstanding. But I found Tenby a little bit drab given how popular it was. It was heaving which I didn’t mind but I really do not get the hype.

I went a few years ago in Summer and was expecting to find this absolute gem and it was fine. I enjoyed some of the bakeries.

Am I the only person who doesn’t get it?

I don’t understand how people do multiple day trips there

I absolutely love Tenby, but it's nostalgic for me as I visited as a child. I love the pubs and cafes, the cobbled streets, catching the boat to Caldey island and walking around there.
Where I live now, everyone locally raves about Borth. When I go, all I think is 'it's no Tenby' 🤣
I don't get the attraction at all!
Like you say, horses for courses!

Same for me. We went to Tenby every year on our holiday. The places I stayed are still there and it’s a real sentimental journey. It is really busy and I prefer r not to visit during school holidays. The harbour is just beautiful. Nowadays though we stay in Penally to avoid the crowds. They also have the most confusing multi storey car park I've ever been in.

Devon24 · 24/02/2025 15:28

I like Cornwall, Salcombe and Norfolk. I think I am scarred by a week in Tenby in the pouring rain and my mother lost her shit and packed up on day 4 and they argued all the way home (6 hours plus) not fun. I remember slate hills and being scared. So no, not my first choice.

I never really understood the hype, Tenby in rain is pretty grey. But then I went in sunny weather and I’m a convert now!

All seaside places are pretty grey and drab when it’s raining aren’t they? Tenby’s hardly unique in that.

dicdicnurse · 24/02/2025 15:31

I guess for me it's not about the day trips it's about the being away from chaos and absorbing the sea, landscape and environment. We don't really do anything whilst we are there, just walk on the beach, pub food, and repeat.

spoodlesee · 24/02/2025 15:33

I like any seaside that has a nice beach that's safe for the dc with accommodation & food options/shops all very walkable. And if you have to drive, decent parking

KimberleyClark · 24/02/2025 15:35

Newport is pretty nice too (the seaside town in Pembrokeshire, not the city close to Cardiff!).

Titasaducksarse · 24/02/2025 15:36

I'm nostalgic about Tenby too having first visited as a child 40plus years ago
I've travelled a lot but there's something about the view over north beach to the harbour that is as good as anywhere in the world that I've been.
I think it really is my happy place. We visit every year even if just once for a weekend. Admittedly the only time I don't love it as much is high season.

I honestly couldn't get someone not saying they love it.

Horrace · 24/02/2025 15:37

Nah, Tenby isn't for me either. Went there plenty as a kid but it's Cornwall every time for me now.

I don't really like Victorian towns though and that's what Tenby is. I prefer quaint fishing villages, piskies, pirates, pasties, cider and a Cornish accent.

Does it have to be in Wales? What about Blackpool?

Blackpool is good. You have a choice of theatres which put on a variety of shows in summer, including musicals, along with a beer festival etc. Lovely beaches at St Anne's and Fleetwood, very accessible. Lots of fun going on in Blackpool as well (but check it's not the weekend of the Young Farmers get-together when everyone who can departs).

KvotheTheBloodless · 24/02/2025 14:56

No no no, St Davids is bloody brilliant! It's my happy place, I love it there.

More than willing to go again if I've missed something as we go to West Wales fairly often. I just found it so much smaller than I thought, not unpleasant but not really raveworthy either.

Titasaducksarse · 24/02/2025 15:40

I probably wouldn't pick Tenby as a typical seaside town in the UK. I'd go for somewhere in England probably that's tackier lol
Also a pier is quintessentially British seaside town too

MarketSt · 24/02/2025 15:41

Of Pembrokeshire (which we adore) St David's and Tenby are low on the list. We much preferred our day in Pembroke to St David's (castle fans though).

Much MUCH prefer the quieter beaches/towns.

Little Haven is my #1 - but I don't really want other people knowing about it so pretend it's horrible please Blush

What are you favourite Cornish places to visit
may I ask? Ive done Penzance and St Ives. Gorgeous. Lived up to the hype in my view

Tenby is my happy place:

  • Sitting up on the statute Prince Albert looking down onto the town
  • Walk along the south beach towards Penally (afternoon tea at Penally Abbey)
  • Drinks at Tenby Sailing Club
  • BBQ at Tap n Tan
  • Sitting in the harbour looking at the boats
  • Drinks at Tenby Brewery
  • Shopping in The Nook and Equinox
  • Pizza on Upper Frog Street
  • Swimming off Castle beach and walking back up to the harbour through the archway.
  • Drinks at the bar at The Plantagenet
  • Dinner at Saltys in the south beach.
  • Sitting in the harbour with take away fish and chip
  • Boat trip to see the seals on Caldy Island
  • Walk the coastal path to Saundersfoot
  • Or get the bus there and walk to Wiseman’s bridge (via the rock pools)
  • Train to Manorbier Castle - and/or beach with all the rock pools.

I dream of living there but I know I won’t as it’s too remote from all my friends and family.

Really liked Port Isaac.

Aquabi · 24/02/2025 15:43

I love the Pembrokeshire coast. Just didn’t really think Tenby was all that spectacular

ElfAndSafetyBored · 24/02/2025 15:43

Lyme Regis and Broadstairs are both very pretty.

Horrace · 24/02/2025 15:45

@Aquabi

Looe is our favourite place. Just back from a week there last week. Been going 2 or 3 times a year for 20 years. Would love to retire there. It's perfect.
You can walk to Polperro along the coast.
The Lizard is lovely too.

Teado · 24/02/2025 15:46

I loved it but I don’t think it’s a quintessentially British seaside resort if that’s what your visitors want. It’s too laid-back and a bit too “classy” iyswim

ThighsYouCantControl · 24/02/2025 15:46

Only ever been once and it was raining. I don’t doubt it’s beautiful in the sunshine but in the rain it was pretty bleak and literally every street we turned into there was at least 1 child having an absolute wobbly. Kids crying everywhere. That and the sign in the carpark we left the car in that basically said “look yeah when it’s heaving here in Tenby please fuck off somewhere else” was our lasting impression.

MimiSunshine · 24/02/2025 15:48

I would stay in Saundersfoot and visit Tenby.
Lovely beach, lovely small harbour village with good walks especially the coastal path through the tunnels and easier a condition to find with parking.

MixedBananas · 24/02/2025 15:48

Tenby is nit note worthy for someone from Canada.

The neat beaches are in North Devon and Cornwall. Some of them are magical and so amazing.

Ad a child Weymouth is my nostalgic happy place but it is not amazing. I wouldn't take family there.

The west coast of Wales much nicer around Cardegion region. Even the lakes.

Lake Vryny and Lake Bala are wonderful. Also Hafren forest and falls.

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 24/02/2025 15:54

Tenby is my favourite UK holiday. We usually go for a week every year with another family.
We tried somewhere different last year which was nice but the kids felt they'd missed out by not going! Usual service will resume this year.

We were all talking about what we'd do if we won the lottery and the kids all said 'buy the blue house in Tenby'.
