Am I the only person who doesn’t get Tenby?

Obviously no offence intended. Different strokes for different folks.

So we have some Canadian cousins coming over in Sumer and as an extended family we are putting together an itinerary. Everyone has said we need to do a typical seaside town. It is pretty much unanimous that everyone in the family chat has decided Tenby is the #1 choice.

Don't get me wrong the actual landscape was outstanding. But I found Tenby a little bit drab given how popular it was. It was heaving which I didn’t mind but I really do not get the hype.

I went a few years ago in Summer and was expecting to find this absolute gem and it was fine. I enjoyed some of the bakeries.

Am I the only person who doesn’t get it?

I agree it's nice enough but not WOW the way some people claim it is. I also felt the same about St David's in Pembrokeshire. Like, it's pleasant but it's absolutely tiny, the cathedral is nice enough but that's about it. Yet it's raved about as a must see if you go to West Wales.

You can always tell how interesting/dull somewhere is by looking at the list of ‘Top 10 Things To Do in X’. If a church is top of the list then the place isn’t going to be very exciting 😃

Does it have to be in Wales? What about Blackpool?

God grief! Have you been there recently? It's a drugs ghetto, gangster style, hellhole!

Exactly, a typical UK seaside town, which is what the op asked for!

If you stay anywhere between the North Pier and the South Pier and Pleasure Beach, you are absolutely right. I couldn’t agree more.
But If you go north of the North Pier you will find a very long stretch of promenade with small, quiet hotels. You see very few people apart from anglers and dog walkers.
DH and I often go for an overnighter for a quiet, peaceful 24 hours. However we are only an hour’s drive away.
The contrast is dramatic and a lot of people don’t know about it.

Agree ilovecleaning, north shore down to Cleveleys is lovely, don't tell everyone though...🤫

lol 😀. I know! But when people ask where we’re going I am embarrassed in case they think we are beer-swilling, foul mouthed louts 😆. So I feel I have to tell them about the North Pier Cleveleys stretch!

SerenityNowSerenityNow · 26/02/2025 11:17

Blackpool can be really fun, especially when you've got young kids. You just need to embrace it for what it is.
My ten year old loves it and last year requested a trip there for his birthday. We're not beer swilling, foul mouthed louts.

Arran2024 · 26/02/2025 12:14

My adult daughter has a learning disability and I have taken her to Blackpool several times with a friend. She loves the pleasure beach, the piers, the tower, the ice show, zoo, Mme Tussauds. We stay at the Imperial, north of the north pier and nice and quiet. We get a direct train from London. Great for a couple of days especially if you get the weather.

Bispham is lovely but the tides there can be treacherous.

My son and partner have taken their 2 small children and stayed a night in the Premier Inn. They cherry pick their activities (Sea Life to see the sharks, a ride on a tram, picnic in Stanley Park). The kids loved it and the eldest has asked to go back ‘to the hotel in Blackpool again’ this summer. Glad your daughter and friend have such a lovely time.

I’m sure you’re not 😂. And I expect you avoid the ‘drugs ghetto gangster-style hell hole’ bit, too. (See Pinkproseccolady) 🎡

I'm not sure we do completely! Our AirBnB was in an interesting street! I grew up visiting Blackpool so think I'm a bit immune to the dodgy bits.

For those with kids the picknmix ticket is great value! For £100 3 of us did the dungeon, the tower, sea life and Madame Tussauds all in one day. It also included the circus and the Gruffalo activity.

The Pick n Mix sounds brilliant. I’ll tell my son about it. Thanks ☺️

I've got to admit, I thought the same about Tenby. The beaches and landscapes around Pembrokeshire are wonderful but I didn't think Tenby was all that.

If I was choosing a seaside town I'd go for Lyme Regis or St Ives...or Salcombe.

Lyme Regis is easily my favourite. But I’d never bother with Salcombe again.

ArtTheClown · 26/02/2025 16:12

I thought St Davids was a bit hmm... pretty enough, but no better than the thousands of rural French villages you pass, it wouldn't make it into the guidebooks as a particular spectacular one.
Pembrokeshire is weird altogether - amazing coastlines but most of the major towns are miserable.

bobbycock79 · 26/02/2025 16:24

I was born and bred in Tenby, my family still live there and we go back whenever we can. I can now see what a privilege it was growing up there. Of course like all seaside towns your enjoyment will be weather dependent but on a warm sunny day I truly believe there is no where else as beautiful in the UK. The beaches are big enough to never feel crowded and the magical Caldey Island is a short boat trip away with it's stunning Priory Bay (pic below). So many other wonderful beaches a short drive away too. I also have extended family near Blackpool , I can only assume the previous poster was joking by recommending it over Tenby.

That's because all the houses have been bought up by non-locals and they've taken over.

You mean St Davids or the whole of Pembrokeshire?
I guess it's the same for anywhere nice and picturesque in the UK - poor locals priced right out of their own area.

Solva is gorgeous. It’s currently posing as Ireland in Unforgotten.
